BMW has launched the new 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe in South Africa. The car comes in both a 103 kW 218i Gran Coupe, 140 kW 220d and a 225 kW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe. The Gran Coupe models are designed to deliver styling and design with everyday 4-door usability and space.
BMW fits the new models with the latest driver assistance tech, including Blind Spot Detection, Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Detection, and Lane Departure Warning. The 218i is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine while both the 220d and M235i are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
The car can reach 6100km/h in 8.7 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 215km/h. The BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe has 225kW and 450Nm of torque from a tuned version of the engine. It also features a reinforced crankshaft with larger diameter main bearings, new pistons, and modified connecting rods.
The M235i also benefits from a larger turbo and modified fuel injectors. It can go from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds with the optional overboost function making the deed 0.1-seconds faster. The M235i also has a new standard mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential. The standard transmission is an 8-speed Sport automatic, the M235i gets special M Sport suspension standard, and that suspension is optional on the 220d.
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will also be available from launch with an efficient yet powerful diesel unit, featuring a diesel particulate filter, NOx adsorption catalyst and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. The 2-litre four-cylinder BMW 220d generates output of 140 kW at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 400 Nm. All of this means the sprint to 100 km/h from rest takes just 7.5 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 235 km/h.
Both cars can be fitted with an optional HUD projecting on the windshield. Paint options include two standard colours and eight metalics. The cars are already on sale via BMW’s online store and will be on dealership floors once lockdown restrictions are lifted at the below price points.
