Reservations at this pop-up bar are tough. Lines are long — half the tables are saved for walk-ins. The music is too loud; deep soulful house (the kind I like) the night I was there. The servers look as though they’re ready to toss aside their order pads and dance along to the mellow sounds. The design appears to be a mélange of an exclusive lounge in one of Sandton’s towers and that pool deck found at a said hotel. Everything hints at the brilliance of attention to detail and sophistication – even to the dishes.
I recently got my fair share of the Martell Cognac pop-up bar experience as I was afforded the opportunity to host a few friends – VIP style – at their chic venue at the Sandton eye (Gautrain Radisson Blue). Its dubbed the place to be this summer, and here are 5 reasons why its worth a visit this weekend.
1. Dj Kent and Pex Afrikah
The king of the weekent, DJ Kent will make his 1715 debut on 20 November while Pex Afrikah will close the show on the 21st. He (kent) is synonym with ‘a great start to your weekend’, best known for his weekend started mixes on 5FM, with DJ Fresh. Two of his singles “Spin my world around” and “Top of the world” reached #1 on most South African radio stations music charts and enjoying high rotation.Every week the old world gets to meets new – jazz artists in collaboration with urban house legends such as Glen Lewis and Euphonik as they create cool beats that set the mood for the ultimate cognac experience at 1715.

2. Best Cocktails in town
Out of the three dozen drinks – or so – there’s always a worthwhile variation on the sidecar, the Gambler, and the old-fashioned. The bartenders utilize fine shapes of ice, and as the line grows at the bar of this elegant haunt, their attention to detail remains the same; orange peel is carefully placed atop drinks, bitters dropped with painterly precision and smoked to perfection. All made using Martell Cognac as the main ingredient. There’s also the R1000 000 cocktail – if you have the budget for it.
3. The food is amazing
Some of us fancy the ‘ol snack while we enjoy our cocktails, you know, these nights can get long sometimes. The food: creamy, complex, and compelling. Goes perfectly with their cocktails. I was able to nab only one slice of their vegetarian selection, the gourmet pizza, because my guests gobbled it up. If you crave something esle, Vicky Crease and Caro de Waal, two of South Africa’s biggest names in the food world, teamed up to create the cognac paired food experiences at 1715 by Martell Cognac. The food experiences take place during the week.
4. Their Cigar Lounge
This is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet evening or spark up a good conversation with Sandton’s most sophisticated crowd. Complementing your favorite Martell Cognac offering, is a huge selection of imported cigars, all awaiting the opportunity to pleasure your palate. This is lux hospitality with an infusion of old world charm.
5. Explore the Martell brand
Upon entry, the space itself gives you a 3-dimensional experience of the brand – showcasing beautiful aesthetics, world-class entertainment and fine cuisine. There’s also the Martell Trunk – a unique display piece designed by renowned French luxury malletier, Pinel & Pinel. Endowed with twenty-eight montres that contain the most unique and exclusive blends of Martell Cognac as well as crystal glasses and decanters, rare scented candles and a cigar humidor, here you can get the full Martell Cognac brand experience – and even a tasting too!
