Having resisted the growing presence of mobile payment systems from Apple, Standard Bank, and Samsung, banking giant FNB today announced its own solution called — wait for it — Scan To Pay. The system is actually rolling out as an update to the existing FNB app for both iOS and Android, and is accepted at select stores starting today.
Surprisingly, Scan To Pay greatly differs from the existing payment solutions in that customers can simply enable the new FNB App ‘Scan to Pay’ widget on their smartphones. Alternatively, they can select the Payments option on the FNB App, login and select FNB Pay, then click on ‘Scan to Pay’.
This setup actually has several advantages that will make Scan To Pay available to the greatest number of customers possible. First, it’s not based on smartphone hardware, so not only does Android or iOS not matter, but shoppers can still use their older generation device, regardless if it has NFC or not.
