We just can’t help it but there’s something about badass women who do what they do with style, class and panache that gets our blood flowing in all the right places. This is what you will get in our preview today. Added to its promising premise is a very strong three lady cast (Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss) who assume the lead roles…there’s a lot to like about this one. The Kitchen (not an inspiring name we know) is the movie in question and boy does it have all the right things that enable the pots to be done:
The gritty, female-driven mob drama The Kitchen, from New Line Cinema and BRON Creative, was written and directed by Andrea Berloff, who was nominated for an Oscar for the original screenplay for “Straight Outta Compton.”
The Kitchen stars Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” “Bridesmaids”), Tiffany Haddish (“Girls Trip”), and Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) as three 1978 Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose mobster husbands are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but a sharp axe to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia’s matters into their own hands—proving unexpectedly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition…literally.
This flick is described as being a gritty, ground breaking, all-female mob movie that defies stereotype and doesn’t pull any punches. The film refutes gender expectations by delivering on a full throttle “R-rating” with hard-edged unapologetic, unabashed violence and high tension interspersed with brief notes of dark humour, which appeals to females but will also be embraced by males. Probably not suitable for the kids then (best to keep them away) but more than a perfect fit for us. Excited for this one we are, it’s officially releasing this Friday, 16 August 2019.
