We love stories that present unique ideas and creativity, this is a perfect example of just that. The Goethe-Institut Johannesburg has recently announced ‘TextILE: code, beads and yarns – a transdisciplinary approach to patternmaking’. This is the first of a series of events that merge the worlds of knitting and coding, on the 29 June 2023, at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in combining traditional handicrafts with modern technology. One particularly exciting area of exploration is the intersection of knitting and coding. TextILE aims to create a platform where people can learn how to code through knitting, providing an accessible and engaging way to learn new skills.

The idea of combining knitting and coding might seem like an unlikely pairing at first glance. However, upon closer examination, these two disciplines share several similarities that make them an interesting match for a collaborative project.
At their core, both knitting and coding involve creating patterns. In knitting, patterns are created by looping yarn in a specific way to form a fabric. In coding, patterns are created by writing instructions that a computer follows to perform a specific task. Both knitting and coding require attention to detail and an ability to think logically and creatively.
This public event aims to explore the unique synergy between crafts and technology, offering participants a chance to delve into the creative possibilities that arise when knitting meets coding.
The ‘TextILE’ launch event will take place on the 29th of June 2023, at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg, from 18:00pm to 20:00pm. Participants are encouraged to join and explore the innovative world where knitting and coding converge. Check here for more info on the event.
