We know what you’re thinking… And that’s exactly what we have planned and are currently doing with the new Kia Sportage we have gracing our driveway this December Holiday. We’re exploring Mzansi, baby!

I know, I know, the intro to this article is a bit loud, but we can’t help it when the Fusion Orange on this Sportage is making the most noise. I love it actually.

So, here’s what’s actually going on. The good folk at Kia South Africa were kind enough, and they decided to loan us this machine to spend the holidays with. The only catch? Have as much fun as possible with the vehicle and show it off to the rest of Mzansi. And that’s exactly what we have planned. Over the next 3 – or 4 weeks, we’ll be exploring the greater parts of Mzansi with this cute orange baddie. The term baddie is used loosely here. And no, the car is not bad.

According to Urban Dictionary, a baddie is someone who is always slaying the game and always on fleek. Basically, a person that is extremely put together and looks phenomenal even on her off days.

Our test vehicle is the 2023 Sportage GT-Line, coming in at R664 995. The GT-Line trim adds a number of features to the EX package, most notably 18″ alloy wheels, remote folding rear seats, blind-spot assist, panoramic sunroof, a 12.3″ touchscreen with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, power driver’s seat, and a wireless phone charging pad.

Just when you thought we’re done, its worth adding that the interior of the Sportage GT-Line is a lovely place to spend some time. Leg, head, and shoulder room front and rear are amazing. Not forgetting, Cargo capacity, even with the rear seats occupied, is similarly excellent.

The seats are finished off in a deep black animal-free leather. A material, which I could best explain as vinyl. It’s not too obvious. Nor does it scream premium at you. It feels darn good to the touch though.

My time behind the wheel of the new Kia Sportage till date has been, well, less than astonishing. But its only been a week. The ride itself is comfortable, quiet and powerful enough for almost any driving condition you throw at it.

Again, I know this article might be a bit vague when you read it, but it was just an introduction to our lovely December ride. I’ll be sharing more with you as the days and weeks go by about my experience with the Sportage. From sunny Cape Town, have a lekker one!

Fun and practicality are a tricky combination in the world of crossovers, but the 2021 Mazda CX-3 could be the answer for those whose budget doesn’t stretch to Mercedes-Benz’s territory yet. While the GLA may blend engaging dynamics with its family-friendly form, the Mazda throws in unexpected attainability too.

The Mazda CX-3 is a subcompact SUV that has been in production since 2015. We recently test drove the CX -30 but rest assure that these are two different models and I believe this subcompact SUV will impress even the biggest sceptic. This 2021 model has a much shaper and more sleek front design compared to the previous models. The crossover design has a striking beauty that you really can’t contest.

For our long test of the Mazda CX-3 we received the car in Mazda’s newly developed paint called Polymetal Grey of which I’m a fan of. The colour is different and just helps you engage with the car more than you normally would, if that makes sense. Not much has changed on the exterior of the car expect the new pain colour that compliments the car exceptionally well.

The fun starts in the interior of the vehicle, as it sees the most change more so on the tech end. The vehicle has been updated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, the updated multimedia system and head-up display and blind spot monitoring. The car also has a rear cross traffic alert which lets you know of potential hazards when reversing. This uses the rear mounted radar sensors. Rear parking sensors and reverse camera have been installed with an audible alarm to assist the driver when reversing.

Our test vehicle was also fitted with a sunroof of which adds so much to the general aesthetic of the car of which I love. The interior design is definitely my favourite part of the car as it boasts a great BOSE sound system and well-designed leather seats and panels.

The use of high-end leather adds such great comfort and luxury to this subcompact SUV. I guess this is definitely something I enjoy about Mazda. Their uncompromised interiors. They understand that as a driver of the car you spend lots of time in it and the comfort and great design will go a long way.

The engine of the Mazda CX-3 is not the most desirable part of this vehicle as it to lack considerably when it comes to performance. Even with the 2.0L engine that produces 115kW is underwhelming. However, when you are pacing your travels it’s seems to manage very well especially in high traffic conditions. Other subtle features I like are the electronic parking brake, power fold mirrors and cruise control.

With the Mazda CX-3 the brand does live up to the notion “a tangible sense of quality and pleasure on tight city streets” and “It’s smoother to drive, quieter and more refined.” The car does live to this testament and the Mazda has stepped up its offering by introducing a high level of luxury in a car that starts from R346 700.

Mazda also gives you a 3-year unlimited kilometre warranty, 3-year Mazda care roadside assistance and a 3-year Mazda care unlimited kilometre service plan.

BMW has finally pulled the wraps off the new generation of M3 and M4 performance cars for 2021. The core M3 and M4 models made their Mzansi debut earlier in March and we were invited to experience them first hand.

I must forewarn you, for these new high-performance vehicles, it can either go two ways; Its either you love them or not and that’s attributed to the controversial frameless and elongated kidney grills. I have spoken to a number of people and I can safely say that more people dislike the front appearance of these cars compared to a lot who are just indifferent. Personally, I love the new design and even more so on these new M performance cars.

Starting with the exterior

The aforementioned elongated kidney grills have their fair share of fans and I’m definitely one person that’s in favour. But less on that debate. From a first impressions standpoint alone, Both these vehicles look very aggressive and ready take on the fastlane with relative ease.

They come standard with a CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) roof with two fins running longitudinally along it. Unlike the M4 Competition, the M3 Competition has wider wheel arches which is one of the random features I like as it adds that sexy width on the car making it look even more track ready. The four tailpipes are electronically controlled enabling that beautiful sound as the cars pull off. Each tailpipe measures 100mm in diameter and just styles that rear to look even more fierce especially when coupled with a glossy diffuser.

The driver cockpits in these models are very similar to the M8 competition. However, updates have been made to suit the new vehicles. For one there’s a wider range of driver assistance systems along with BMW Live Cockpit Professional. Included as standard is the Powertrain and chassis settings allowing for individual configuration and included is a drift analyser.

The M3 & M4 Competition also come standard with M Sport seats with integrated height-adjustable head restraints. However, there is an optional M Carbon bucket seat with structure-based design and I believe these are the best option when out on the track. Don’t get me wrong, they are quite comfortable for daily driving, too, but time in time has to be restricted to shorter distances.

Both cars come with an 8 speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic. This replaces the DCT 7-speed we loved from yesteryear. The ergonomically optimized carbon shift paddles make for a better experience when driving the cars “manually”. Furthermore, Competition models will also become available with M xDrive all-wheel-drive system for the first time from Q4 2021.

Like it or not, it’s what behind the grille that counts

Overall the cars are incredibly quick and very enjoyable to drive. The suspension is not too stiff either, therefore delivering on the comfort front both on and off the track. Both Competition models come in a six-cylinder in-line engine with M Twin Power Turbo technology helping the cars churn out 375kW and up to 650Nm. In adding, the M Race Track Package is available which reduces vehicle weight by 25kg thanks to the M Carbon ceramic brakes, special M light-alloy wheels and M carbon bucket seats.

These are phenomenal cars and based on performance, comfort and overall grins these cars will satisfy the petrol head in you. Prices begin at R 1,860,000 for the BMW M3 Competition Sedan and the BMW M4 Competition coupé will be R1,940,000.

The Rio, Kia likes to remind us, helped somehow cement the compact hatch category, but lately it’s struggling to avoid being eclipsed by the rivals it inspired since 1999. The 2021 Kia Rio is the automaker’s answer, combining its eye-catching style with what have long been the Kia hallmarks of refined road manners and a somewhat plush cabin.

As mentioned the Kia Rio has undergone a facelift to help bring its groove back but we can’t help but wonder whether that’s enough to entice South Africans to swing this way since this segment has some tough contenders. For context, the Kia Rio has been taking on the likes of VW’s Polo and Hyundai’s i20.

Let’s talk about the noticeable changes to the Rio; The front fascia has a flatter sportier “tiger nose” and the bumper has been reworked to assist with more air intake to the radiator while the fog lamps have been relocated. The LS models now have 15-inch alloy wheels while the EX gets the 17-inch wheels.

Kia then supplemented the Rio with the inclusion of the 1.4LS option of which I was excited about since they only offered the 1.2L option previously. When it comes to frugality, unfortunately, the 1.4L engine that pushes out 73kW that’s coupled with a six-speed transmission leaves you with a lack of passion for the Rio.

I found this spec to be underwhelming when it came to power delivery. However, I found that the overall drive of and comfort levels of the car met my expectations of a typical day to day drive. Also, if you are a manual kind of driver you will be pleased to know that the Kia Rio is also available in a manual transmission which also leads me to believe the drive may be more desirable in this configuration.

The interior showcase minimal changes that work very well for the Rio. The 8-inch touch screen infotainment is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ready. The Rio only offers two USB slots, with one that service the front and another that services the rear passengers. The sound system isn’t the greatest when you bump up your favourite Yanos tunes. However, I love that the Rio has enough space to fit 4 adults comfortably. The rear folding seats are an absolute bonus as they open up the vehicle to fit more cargo because of the 60:40 split of the seats. Another upside is the fact that they fold flat meaning they give more flexibility when loading large items. Overall, the interior has a very simplistic appeal with minimal dials in the steering wheel to control that audio system.

Overall, I think the Kia Rio is a stunning car when it comes to appearance and durability. With a price tag that starts from R280 995 and an unlimited kilometre or 5-year warranty I believe you do get for what you pay for.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and in this case, we’re referring to the 2021 Kia Seltos Diesel. You may know that ‘Seltos’ derives from ‘Celtos,’ the son of Greek god Hercules who was fatefully conceived amid a blackmailing affair with princess Celtine.

Kia’s hierarchy is a little less melodramatic, with Hercules in this case referring to the petrol Seltos, a SUV that I absolutely loved when we had it on test earlier in 2020. This time around, we’re checking out the Diesel variant.

If there are three aesthetic rules to live by, they could well be that style is subjective, strong designs soften over time, and it’s rude to comment on other peoples’ nose-jobs. Pity, then, the 2021 BMW 4 Series and its love-it-or-(more-likely)-hate-it grille, is as bold as the automaker’s boasts of driving prowess and lashings of technology.

As 2020 came to a close, we wrapped up the year by attending the BMW 4 series coupe launch down in sunny Cape Town. This car was controversial from its initial images that were released due to its larger than normal kidney grille. In those early days it was either you liked the car or didn’t.

I on the other hand thought it was a positive switch up since the newer models have a more distinct appearance which then made sense on this new model. Personally, I liked the vehicle then and like it even more now.

As mentioned, the exterior has evoked mixed feeling amongst car enthusiasts across the board. However, once you see this car in person for the first time you begin to feel different towards it. By feeling different I mean it in a positive way. The 4 has a sporty track ready appearance and that huge grille gives it’s that aggression. Even though much of its looks are derived from the 3 Series, The 4 has a much wider stance. Both rear and front lights have a slimmer design and personally I think the front lights were inspired by The 8. If you don’t believe me take a quick glance at them again.

The interior is much similar to other BMW’s most especially the dash area of which I’m happy about. The generous might say that there’s no need to fix what doesn’t need it, but it’s a reminder all the same that there’s less distance from the 3 Series than the outside might suggest. For one, I like getting into a BMW and knowing how the buttons and knobs work this makes for a pleasurable experience.

The customizable colour combinations of the interior leather and finishes give it much more personality and, dare we say, flavour to an individual’s needs and preferences. My favourite scheme during the launch drive had to be combination of grey and white interior. But one would have to steer clear of wearing blue denims when riding this specification.

Honestly, the cabin space is rather limited, I guess it makes sense why this car is targeted at individuals that don’t have kids or just one. If you fall under that segment then this really could be the car for you. However, don’t despair if you have a family because the Gran Coupé is designed just for you.

We test drove two variants; The 420d that churns out 140kW and the M440i xDrive that outputs an impressive 275kW. If I had to choose one I would take the 420d, I believe it produces the right amount of power and if you have driven a BMW diesel you would also know how fuel efficient they are. This particular model is claimed to do between 4,2 – 4,3 l/100km compared to the M440i that has an efficiency between 7.1-6,8l/100km.

Besides the fuel efficiency, the 420d delivers an exciting drive, obviously the xDrive and M sport package in the M440i make for a performance enhanced drive, I still feel the 420d is not to be underrated.

Additional features on the M440i xDrive include, M launch control, M Sprint function that gives you a burst of speed should you need it. The M Suspension and M TwinPower Turbo engine, M Steptronic Sport Transmission and the much-needed M Sport exhaust system. All of this gives you a 0-100km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds compared to the 420d that does it in 7.1 seconds.

Both the 420d and M440i drive very well and I feel the drivability of this coupé is better than the drive of its greatest rival the Mercedes Benz C200 Coupé. The low driving position is quite enjoyable and the steering is quite exceptional too. Even though the car is sporty in design the drive in both variants is very comfortable and suited for daily driving. One can expect to pay from R802 900 for the 420d and M440i from R1 117 450.

There are only so many times you can tell someone they should consider buying a Caddy, then see them park a new SUV on their driveway, before you start to question your sanity. Mzansi’s wholehearted embrace of bakkies, SUVs, and crossovers has done a shockingly efficient job of squeezing out the humble work horse (read: Caddy) from consideration.

Recently the 2020 Volkswagen Caddy graced our test driveway and I used it to drive to photograph a wedding in Vierfontein. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to really put the Caddy to the test and see how this car would perform driving it over a long distance. One thing I knew for sure was that the space was not an issue.

First Impressions Count

The exterior design of the Caddy is a bit of a weird shape but I didn’t seem to mind it. In fact, the more time I spent in it and looked at it the more attracted I became to it. The chestnut brown metallic colour works very well on our test model. The removeable tow bar is an optional extra and I think with this car being a workhorse it would be recommended for you to bite the bullet and check it as an option on your spec list.

The best thing I enjoyed about the vehicle has to be the versatile space. I didn’t struggle to pack some of the gear I needed in it. In fact, there was a surplus of space. The boot opens up very well allowing you to get maximum entry into the vehicle. However, I thought a split tailgate would work even better more especially if you’re parked in reverse and need to get entry into the boot where there’s shading or short hangs involved.

The Caddy also has a 60:40 split on the foldable seats increasing your cabin capacity. To maximum interior space, the side doors slide open and are slim enough for tight parking spaces. The tall roof allows you to take on large items and the storage compartment above the driver and front passenger could come in handy to store valuables out of sight. The Caddy boasts lots of space and has ample legroom for even the tallest of passengers. Our editor Papi Mabele (1.9m) is the tallest person in the team and he could fit perfectly comfortable in the rear seats.

The optional park assist is a great touch, the front and rear distance control do come in handy and more especially the rear-view camera if what you hauling is blocking your rear-view mirror. The infotainment is touch enabled and supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – a welcomed touch to the interface. The multifunction steering wheel make it a lot easier to manage your playlist and calls while driving. Cruise control always comes in useful and its great knowing that the Caddy didn’t skimp out on that.

Safety wise VW has incorporated the Caddy with 6 airbags, ABS and remote central locking as a standard feature on the new line.

The engine has a displacement of 999cc and produces 75kW and 175Nm of torque enabling it to do a 0-100km/h sprint in 12.1 seconds. The turbo charged engine isn’t that great but I felt it was adequate for the vehicle.

However, the 5-speed manual transmission paired with the small engine does leave you frustrated when driving in the city. A yield pushes you to get into first gear instead of second gear. Besides that, the gearbox is smooth and responds like a gearbox should, true to Volkswagen fashion.

We caution you though that this is not a car build for speed but one that’s built to work for you and your business and with that said the claimed 5.6litres/100km is not too wild of a statement from VW as I managed to get it to 6.0litres/100km while averaging between 100 and 120km/h on the highway. Meaning some fuel savings are on the cards for you.

Verdict

All in all, I really enjoyed my time in the VW Caddy, the drive was comfortable and the car has ample space for goods and passengers. The rear seat allows passengers more than ample leg room. In total the car can seat 5 adults comfortably and the air conditioning will ensure all are cool while in transit. I personally think a 1. – something engine should be on the cards just lift the power a little. However, this current Caddy Trendline does offer great value.

The VW Caddy comes with a 3 year/120 000km warranty, 3 year/60 000km Genuine AutoMotion service plan with a 15 000 km service interval. All this carries a R348 900 price tag.

I’m undecided as to whether I like how the 2020 Honda Civic hatchback or how the sedan looks like. All I know right know is that the sedan is an acceptable option and Honda has definitely proven once again that they can keep up with the competition by producing safe, economical and reliable vehicles.

There’s a reason the Civic is a perennial best-seller for Honda; nothing else in the automaker’s line-up quite epitomizes its combination of practicality, attainable refinement, and uncontroversial good looks. In the case of the 2020 Civic, a recent refresh sets it up to better fend off rivals like Toyota’s Corolla and Hyundai’s Elantra.

Let’s get you inside. The interior design of the Honda Civic is made up of high-quality materials and has that executive touch with a comforting ergonomic design. The overall design is uncluttered and makes great use of the space that’s available in the car. There is one hinderance though, I found that the placement of the USB port was located poorly and having one port was rather limiting, especially if you’re not alone in car and your mobile devices are running low.

Surprisingly, the new Civic has very low cabin noise due to its improved sound proofing and noise insulation on the doors – a much needed improvement. On the comfort front, the back seats have ample space suitable for a tall individual, better yet, three adults can fit comfortably in the rear.

The Honda Civic has some really good safety and tech features that also add to driver safety and convenience whilst driving in comfort. The seven inch-touch LCD display is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ready. The media can also be controlled via the multi-function steering wheel. The Civic also has smart key that allows for an easier way to enter the vehicle. The most impressive being the walk away auto lock feature that works in hand with the smart key. Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive cruise control with low speed following, collision mitigation braking system, forward collision warning are just some of the features that are available with the Honda Civic.

The exterior design of the 2020 Honda Civic Sport gives off a rather sportier feel, compared to the actual drive. Here’s what we mean; The lines are slightly exaggerated but that’s typical of modern Japanese design language. The boot spoiler is something that I had to get used to as it adds some sort of panache to the Civic. The coupé like design of the sloping roof line does add some sleekness to the vehicle. I enjoyed the detailing in the headlamps and rear lights which is something you really need to look at to appreciate.

The Honda Civic has a 1.5l turbo charged engine that pushes out 127kW and 220Nm of torque and has been paired with a CVT transmission. The CVT transmission works well in this model and really shows of its smoothness in city driving.

There’s a lot to be said for predictability when you’re buying a family car like the Civic: being able to hit the start button and know pretty much exactly what you’re going to get, day in and day out. That’s where Honda originally hung its hat with the Civic, and several generations later, this newest Civic carries the baton with a well deserved poise.

Good performance, lashings of practicality and cabin space, and more than ample active safety tech see Honda doubling-down on everything that has made the Civic a best-seller.

The recommended retail pricing for the Honda Civic 1.5T Sport starts at R527 690 which includes a five-year/200,000 km warranty, a five-year/90,000 km service plan, as well as three years of AA Roadside Assistance. Would you consider the Civic? Let us know in the comments below.

Truth be told absolutely nobody asked for the 2020 BMW 220d Gran Coupe, but that’s not to say there’s not an audience for a feistier, crossover-adjacent, heritage-inverting sports sort of-sedan. Unexpected to the eyes and even more shocking when you consider what’s going on beneath, there’s more to figure out here than just the lengthy name.

We recently had the 220d Gran Coupe in our driveway and we filmed out time with it. Check out the review below!

My earliest recollection of Mazda was when I was growing up and the 323 was the car trending in my area. So much so that even when I see a Mazda now it gives me those nostalgic feels. Driving the Mazda 3 hatchback we had on test recently brought back many good memories and I must admit that Mazda brought it’s A-game with the current model.

The Mazda3 Hatchback has long been the wildcard choice in its segment. Sure, it’s easy to go for a Corolla, or a Civic, or whatever Sam the sales guy is offering a juicy lease deal on at the time, but eager drivers – enthusiasts – look to Mazda for their practical thrills.

Production of the Mazda 3 initially began in 2003 and the evolution of the design both on the exterior and interior are quite attractive especially when you place each generation side by side. The 2020 Mazda 3 has a minimalist approach in design, both on the interior and exterior.

It’s a good looking car, outside and in. This trim comes with 18-inch black-finished alloy wheels, signature LED lights front and back, body colour mirrors, and gloss black exterior detailing, and they look fantastic with the shimmering red paint.

The most notable thing on the Mazda 3 exterior is the height as it sits lower and has a lower roof than the previous generation. This design element gives the car a sporty appearance while the small design makes for a more intermate cabin. However, the design limits the amount of light flowing into the car.

Fortunately, the small sunroof does come to the rescue to open up the Mazda 3 to more light. The sharper design on the front of the car allows the Mazda 3 to have a more sporty and aggressive appearance. These design elements do contribute to making the car feel more luxe. I think the Mazda 3 has succeed in making you feel something toward it. Be it the design element or the engine response that feeling is present.

Open the door and you’ll see why the interior is my favourite element of the current model. It has that luxury feel because of the use of soft leathers finishes and on the seats and around the cabin. Sitting in the drivers seat all instrumentation feels ergonomically right and is placed where it should be. The 8.8-inch touch sensitive infotainment screen sits neatly on the dash board and has a knob that works very much like the ones found in BMW’s.

The volume button also sits next to the menu knob and this small design touch makes so much sense when you wish to select a track and increase the volume. The 12 speaker Bose system also ensures that you have all the rich bass you need when pumping your favourite hip hop tune. The infotainment is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto friendly, has three USB ports, dual-zone climate control, and blind-spot monitoring.

The Mazda 3 is available in 3 derivatives namely; the Active with its 1,5l engine that produces 88 kW and 153Nm of torque. Second is the Dynamic that has the same engine capacity but has extras such as cruise control, auto dimming of the rear-view mirror, leather wrapped steering, parking sensors along with many other features.

The Individual comes in tow with also has the same engine capacity as the Active and Dynamic, again there are more features compared to the previous two. The individual has keyless entry, auto fold mirrors 10-way power adjustable seat for the driver, including 2 memory settings, a 12-speaker Bose sound system with subwoofer and those 18’ alloy wheels we mentioned earlier. The Astina is the fourth derivative, this model has a 2.0l engine that produces 121kW and 213Nm of torque. Also, more features are available on this model such as daytime running lamps, adaptive front lighting system, rear vents, sunroof that power sides and tilts along with many added features.

The 2.0l Astina with automatic transmission we had on test was unfortunately lacking in power. However, I do feel the car Is beautifully designed and with great interior features and even though the engine power is not a favourite. The Mazda 3 does produce a very comfortable drive and at a cruising speed its very smooth with decent fuel efficiency that’s just under the 7.0l/100km mark.

Pricing starts at R369 100 for the hatch and R366 100 for the sedan. I’m more of a hatch kind of guy but the sedan does add that much needed boot space. In closing, Mazda gives you a 3-year unlimited kilometre warranty, 3 year Mazdacare roadside assistance and a 3-year Mazdacare unlimited kilometre service plan.

The 2020 Subaru XV is perhaps the perfect encapsulation of why this tiny Japanese automaker has been able to boast year-after-year growth that would shame industry heavyweights like Toyota, Honda, and Ford. The current generation XV redesign coincided perfectly with the surging demand for small SUVs that were both affordable and ultra-practical, with the Subaru’s boxy shape smoothed out by a fresh-look exterior design and a range of more efficient drivetrains. For those not familiar with the brand, Subaru is the Japanese term for “unite” while its logo is inspired by the collection of stars which form the shoulder of the Taurus Constellation. The brand also sees itself as one with motoring technology that is out of this world.

With that said, its only fitting that we, a technology first media house, review the Subaru XV.

Having won six World Rally championships titles and 46 outright rally wins. The Subaru brand has continuously won over consumers throughout the world. And having arrived at our South African shores in 1992, Subaru has continued to use its unique All Wheel Drive system as seen on this reviewed Subaru XV.

The Subaru XV is a subcompact crossover SUV that was first produced in 2012 to replace the Subaru Impreza XV. The first generation differs quite a lot from the current generation and the technology being at the forefront of that evolution.

The exterior of the Subaru XV in my opinion is very similar to other Japanese cars such as the Toyota CH-R and the Lexus UX 250h. A few tweaks here and there help the XV stand out. The three cars are somewhat related and perhaps that’s the reason for such similarities. The black trimming around the exterior of the car feels a little low-cost for my taste. However, the overall looks are quite welcomed and so are the LED daytime running lights add some sleekness to the XV.

The interior is a little too basic to what we’re used to. We’re mindful that this is an adventure vehicle and materials used make it durable and easy cleaning. It also has full leather seats on all rows. The 8” touch screen infotainment screen is easy to navigate and has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it also supports voice recognition capabilities allowing for hands free usage. I just wish the screen faced the driver a little for ease of use and convenience. However, the multifunction screen is quite useful as it gives you all the information you need about the car.

The technology of the Subaru XV is something to boast about though, and my favourite feature being the safety system called the “Eyesight Pre-Collision Throttle Management System” which uses a set of stereoscopic cameras to also provide a blind spot monitor, forward collision warning and mitigation via automatic braking, and lane departure warning. The car beeps and reduces your speed and even stops the car completely.

Once on the road, the Subaru XV drives very well and the ground clearance is enough to get you through off-roading. In fact, the XV has the highest ground clearance of any vehicle in its class. Unfortunately, I could not experience the X-drive system that allows you to use features like hill decent as we didn’t get much off-roading during our test period. The test vehicle we had, in Cool Grey Khaki, packed a 2.0 litre naturally aspirated engine and a CVT transmission and pushed out 115kW and 196Nm of torque. The power was sufficient, and I felt comfortable when I had to overtake other vehicles. For the first time I enjoyed driving a CVT that has a naturally aspirated engine. The fuel efficiency is claimed to be 7.3 by Subaru but I managed to average 7.9 l/100km.

The Subaru XV comes in two stock derivatives the 2.0i CVT setting you back an easy R436 000 and the 2.0i-S ES that’s only R499 000. With that Subaru throws in a 5-year/150 000km Warranty, Subaru Assist and a 3 year/75 000km Maintenance Plan that has extension options available.

The new Ford Everest has undergone a much need overhaul and these changes make its appearance a lot more appealing than its predecessor. Since the introduction of the Everest to the market in 2003, the second-generation Ford Everest has been the best seller of the two generations. I guess Ford decided, “if it aint broke” just tweak it a bit to keep that welcomed appeal by the masses.

As mentioned the Ford Everest has undergone a face lift, that includes tweaks under the hood too but let’s look at some of the changes that have been made to the exterior first. Firstly, the new grille with the distinctive chrome bars and the front bumper underwent an overhaul. The introduction of lager 20inch wheels has made it more aggressive looking and better suited to take on the rugged South African terrain.

The interior of the vehicle also under went some changes and the introduction of sleek gloss finishes. The new touches add some luxury elements to the car, one of my favourites being the keyless entry and the start button to the vehicle. I feel that is the future of cars, the ease of access and the effortless drive are things that consumers are looking for.

The Ford Everest also introduces the 2.0 Turbo and 2.0Bi-Turbo engines and that’s now accompanied by the 10-speed gearbox transmission. The suspension has also been revised to help the vehicle handle better. This was something I felt when taking curves.

Overall, the drive on the Everest is a lot softer and handles a lot like a smaller vehicle which really helps when handling a vehicle of this magnitude. The Everest is noticeably more spacious however, being a 7-seater, this does eat away at the boot space in order to make room for the 6th and 7th passenger. The back seat has decent space allowing tall adults to sit comfortably, I’m just personally not a huge fan of compromising boot space to accommodate passengers I need that boot space for gear!

With the new engine capacities, the Everest can easily haul a full house of passengers while pulling a trailer for that much-needed family vacation. However, it’s good to know that the Bi Turbo pushes out 157kW and 500Nm vs the single turbo that produces 132kW and 420Nm of torque. The Everest drives well however, I feel it may not be practical as an everyday car in the busy and narrow streets of Johannesburg. Unless ofcourse you’re hauling large loads every other day. You’re constantly reminded of it size each time you pull into a mall and shopping complexes as parking design lately don’t necessarily accommodate cars this big. If I were based in Polokwane where the mix of roads are gravel and tar then the Everest would be a no brainer.

The entry cost for the Ford Everest is R552 500 with optional extra’s that include metallic paint and tow bar – which I would highly recommend.
