When the last episode of Gossip Girl aired on the 17 December 2012, some if not most of us were shattered and that brought an end to one of the iconic TV series of our generation. Fast forward to 2021 and such was the popularity of the original that we have now have another rendition of the series (though not quite the same) which seeks to fill the void and introduce a fresh approach complete with new characters and plots.
The first 10 episodes of the now HBO reboot are available to binge, first on Showmax, with the final two episodes coming express from the US on 10 December 2021. The reboot’s launch saw it trending at #1 on Twitter and generating over 15 billion total social impressions, pulling in a record number of viewers over Part 1’s first weekend on HBO Max in July this year.
ABC News calls the reboot “wicked, compulsively watchable fun… deliciously addictive”, while San Francisco Chronicle says, “The new Gossip Girl succeeds because it one-ups its ancestor… absolutely addictive.”
This extension of the pop culture classic takes us back to the Upper East Side, finding the next generation of New York private school teens about to start the school year at Constance St Jude’s. But this is 2021, and social surveillance has become a very different beast in the nine years since the original blogger’s website went dark.
The ensemble cast includes Uganda’s Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Jordan Alexander (Sacred Lies), Thomas Doherty (High Fidelity, Legacies, Descendants 2 & 3), pop-culture and style icon Tavi Gevinson, pink-haired model and surfing star Evan Mock, and Young Artist Award winner Emily Alyn Lind (Doctor Sleep).
Adding to the show’s clout are Emmy winner Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Deuce), Emmy nominee John Benjamin Hickey (In Treatment, The Good Wife), Golden Globe nominee Malcolm McDowell (Bombshell, A Clockwork Orange), and Laura Benanti (Younger, Supergirl).
Plus, we’ll let you in on a little secret – amid all the gorgeous fresh faces, People’s Choice Award winner Kristen Bell (The Good Place, Veronica Mars and the voice of Frozen’s Anna) returns to voice the anonymous blogger and “Gossip Girl”.
And the most delicious goss yet? Gossip Girl has already been renewed for a second season. By the way, did you know that you still catch all 122 episodes of the original Gossip Girl on Showmax? It’s true but those are available for a limited time only until 31 March 2022.
