First Impressions: Huawei Mate 10 Pro

Huawei has finally revealed it’s plans to enter the high-end smartphone market again, and its ultimate offering — a phone that will compete with the likes of the iPhone X and the Galaxy Note 8 — is the Mate 10 Pro.

Launched earlier this week in Cape Town, The Mate 10 Pro is a gorgeous, polished smartphone that utilizes this year’s popular “bezel-less” design trend, with skimpy edges flanking the screen. It packs a lot of features I’ll dive into in my hands-on review, but there are some questionable decisions that have us scratching our heads.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Pro Porsche Design do share many things in common, but the way they differ is unlike anything we have been accustomed to.

They have the same Kirin 970 processor, which Huawei boasts to have its very one Neural Processing Unit, and 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage configuration as well. They have the same camera setup, a 12 megapixel RGB and 20 megapixel monochrome duo on the back and an 8 megapixel shooter on the front.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro, however, has a 6.0-inch display with an FHD+ 18:9 screen, which means a resolution of 2160×1080. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro also eschews the headphone jack and the microSD card slot and it also gets IP67 rating.

The NPU is designed to enable cloud-based artificial intelligence (AI) and on-device AI to run in concert, faster than ever before. Your Mate 10 Pro should make smart suggestions and run more efficiently as a result. But performance will be identical on the two phones.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is now on sale and will cost R18 999, while the Porsche Design will set you back R26 999.
