Get ready, Mzansi. GAC Motor, a major Chinese automaker, is officially entering our market, and they’ve brought in a big hitter to lead the charge. Leslie Ramsoomar, known for his impressive track record in the auto industry, has been appointed as the Managing Director of both Salvador Caetano South Africa and GAC Motors.
Ramsoomar isn’t new to the game. He’s got a proven ability to steer businesses towards success, having even secured a major manufacturing project while at the helm of Stellantis South Africa. With his expertise and strategic thinking, he’s ready to tackle the complexities of our local market for GAC and Salvador Caetano.
“I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting new chapter with Salvador Caetano Group and GAC Motors,” Ramsoomar said. “South Africa is hungry for investment and growth, and both parties are confident we can make a real difference. We’re bringing high-quality vehicles designed for the evolving needs of South African drivers, all while creating jobs and boosting our economy.”

This appointment isn’t just a win for GAC Motors, it’s great news for South African car enthusiasts too. Sergio Ribeiro, Executive Board Member at Salvador Caetano Auto, highlighted Ramsoomar’s extensive experience and strategic vision, calling him the “ideal leader” for their South African operations. With a focus on innovation and top-tier products, Salvador Caetano and GAC Motors are poised to make a splash in our local market.
Does this mean we’ll soon see GAC’s legendary GS8 SUV and electric Aiony models on South African roads soon? Only time will tell.
