Every now and then you come across stuff that looks like quality, a perfect example is A Confession, a British crime drama. From BAFTA-winning director Paul Andrew Williams (Broadchurch) and Oscar-nominated writer Jeff Pope (Philomena), the series is now available to binge on Showmax. We admit to not watching this yet but there’s something about it that is intriguing and draws in to giving it a shot, something we’re getting ready to do.
But why is that exactly? Well for one it’s based on a true story and the six-part miniseries earned Golden Globe nominee Martin Freeman (Sherlock, Black Panther, The Lord of The Rings) and BAFTA nominee Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley, Downton Abbey) nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively at Britain’s National Film Awards.
The second reason is, well, just watch the trailer below and you might get it:
Set in Swindon, in southwest England, A Confession details the tragic disappearance of 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan in March 2011. Following a night out with girlfriends, Sian left a nightclub in Swindon Old Town to walk the 15 minutes home to her boyfriend. But Sian never made it.
In the ensuing investigation into her disappearance, Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher goes to extreme lengths to see justice done, breaching police protocol and risking both his career and reputation to find answers for both Sian and another young woman, Becky Godden-Edwards, who had gone missing in 2007.
The series is ITV’s fifth biggest programme ever, and holds a 93% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In their four-star reviews, The Telegraph called A Confession “riveting viewing”, while The Guardian praised its “stellar cast comprising actors who specialise in bringing ordinary characters to extraordinary life.”
Watch A Confession now on Showmax.
