I’ve always been a fan of Anne Hathaway, even more so when she appeared as Catwoman on my favourite all time movie, The Dark Night Rises. Since then she’s gone on to appear in other great movies, one of which is another of my favourites, The Intern, starring alongside industry veteran Robert De Niro. So, when given the chance to checkout her latest flick, Colossal, I was more up for it.
In her latest venture, Hathaway plays Gloria an out-of-work party girl who, after getting kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend, is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
Cast – Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell & Tim Blake Nelson
Director – Nacho Vigalondo
Genre – Drama/Fantasy
Running Time – 1h 50m
As you might have latched on by now, this movie is silly, very silly. I don’t think I can even start to explain just how weird it is. Honestly after seeing it I’m on the fence on it. It’s also hard to determine what genre to place it under as it goes from one point to the other quicker than I can say “what is going on here?”. Colossal is a rom-com, drama, fantasy and sci fi movie into one.
I have feeling this movie will lend itself well to a select few, specifically the type of people who are open minded and are just as open to weird and different things, their taste in movies included. And despite not being quite sure what to think of it, Colossal does have a few endearing moments that I liked. Those moments together with my intrigue of how it was going to wrap up is what made me stick around till the end. It’s not one of her finest but I get Hathaway’s decision for getting involved in this one, she’s one of the few actors whose able to mix it up.
I won’t lie to you Colossal is very strange and weird but if you are open to it and are usually up for something different then this will be right up your alley. To its defense, it does have a couple of cool moments that will endear itself to many who give it a chance. It’s a good movie to watch if you are looking for something fun, weird and silly. Weird it is, even for me, I didn’t necessarily dislike or really like it for that matter. Firmly on the fence on this one and that’s why it gets a 5 out of 10 rating from me.
