The 2019 BMW 8 Series is a unique car for BMW. It’s not as plush or excessively luxurious as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, nor is it as aggressively sporting as a Porsche 911 or Aston Martin Vantage. There are, it turns out, a whole host of ways to build a grand tourer. Where the Aston Martin DB11 is a sporty GT, the all-new 8-Series is a more elegant way to transport four people – and their four golf bags. With the new 2019 BMW 8 Series Coupe and Convertible, meanwhile, you can do so on Mzansi roads.
Prominent features of the car include full LED headlights with BMW LaserLight technology. BMW Individual Merino Leather upholstery is standard along with a 16 speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Sport Automatic transmission, and Adaptive M Suspension with Active-Roll Stabilization. M Sport brakes, parking assistant with BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.3-inch and 10.25-inch digital displays are standard. The car is also fitted with navigation and iDrive as standard.
Then again, why would you or anyone drive the BMW 8 Series Convertible like a maniac? Frankly, you shouldn’t. The best way to do so is to fold the top down, put on some sunglasses, play some tunes on the optional – but ever so impressive – 1,375 watt Bowers & Wilkins audio system, and cruise away.
For the money buyers get a sporty car with a 391kW, 750Nm of torque V8 engine that can push the car to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds. xDrive means all-wheel drive and the car has an electronic M Sport rear differential. BMW also integrated active 4-wheel steering for better handling.
Sure, the V8 motor might urge you to breach the speed limit, but your time in the 2019 8 Series Convertible is probably best enjoyed more leisurely, soaking up the attention and making the most of the beautiful cabin. You’ll be able to do that from this week when the 2019 M850i xDrive Coupe and Convertible shows up in dealerships floors. Pricing for the M850i xDrive Coupe: R1 872 900 & M850i xDrive Coupe Convertible: R1 994 300
