The Nokia 8 Sirocco is coming to the Mzansi. This device has an uncommon collection of specifications to it – one we’re not used to rolling with here in the South. It begins with a 5.5-inch edge-to-edge curved pOLED 2K resolution display “in a compact form that nestles perfectly in any hand.”
This device is, as Nokia suggests, “luxuriously weighted to perfectly balance in your hand and comfort.” This I cannot wait to experience. Imagine a smartphone that’s balanced for weight. Like a fine samurai sword, one that you can just TELL is amazing. Just from holding it.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco is made with a frame that’s milled from a single piece of stainless steel. This device’s frame is “2.5 times stronger than 6000 series aluminum,” says Nokia. In the same vein as the luxury described above, this device has a “Full 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 body [that] curves around on all sides of the stainless-steel chassis for beauty and strength.”
That glass covers “more than 95% of the device” – which sounds extremely breakable right out the gate. But we shall see. This device also has an ultra-slim 7.5mm profile and has a 2mm edge with “dual-diamond polished stainless-steel chamfers for the perfect grip.”
The back-facing camera setup on this device includes 12MP and 13MP cameras at its back. One is a 12MP wide-angle camera with 2L7, 1.4um pixels, 2PD, f/1.75, and a FOV of 78″. The second camera back there is 13-megapixels strong with a few features of its own: Tele, 3M3, 1.0um pixels, f/2.6, FOV 47.3″, and it has a dual-tone flash to boot.
Up front is a single 5-megapixel camera with 2x optical zoom and an “ultra-sensitive” wide-angle lens with 84 degree FOV. This device has 3 microphones with which users can capture audio with high dynamic range. That includes capture from “the quietist whisper to the loudest rock concert in stunning 24-bit audio.”
This machine has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform (including processor) and 6GB LPPDDR4x RAM. Inside is 128GB USF2.1 storage. Which is good, because there’s no microSD card slot, scandalously! This device also has a 3260mAh battery inside with Qi-standard wireless charging compliance. This device is 140.93 x 72.97 x 7.5mm, and it’ll roll with Android Oreo right out the gate.
At this time, the Nokia 8 Sirocco will only be coming to us in single-SIM iterations. And it’ll be available in any colour you like, just so long as it’s black. You’ll be able to get this machine for around R499.00/month x 24 months on Post-Paid Operator deals or from R 12 999.00 prepaid on 7 May 2018.
