There is something special about old school feel movies that have a mafia and/or gangster narrative to them. They have a certain style and charisma that never gets old and today’s focus, The Irishman, has that and more. Despite competition from Apple TV, Disney, Amazon Prime etc, Netflix just continues to up the ante and without a doubt in The Irishman, the network has bagged another great coup. This flick has all the right ingredients from the director (the legendary Martin Scorsese), the plot (which we elaborate on further below) and of course a legendary cast in Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci who prove that they still got it.
Sitting at an absolutely out of this world rating of 100% on the Rotten Tomatoes rating scorecard, The Irishman is described as “an epic gangster drama that earns its extended runtime, The Irishman finds Martin Scorsese revisiting familiar themes to poignant, funny, and profound effect.” With a running time of 3h 30m this one isn’t exactly short not by any means and will require some effort to watch but there’s no doubt that dedicating over 3 hours of your life to watch it will be time well spent.
The plot for it sees an epic saga of organized crime in post-war America told through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler and hitman who worked alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century. Spanning decades, the film chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organized crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.
Already receiving fantastic reviews from international critics all over, there’s no doubt that The Irishman is a must see. It’s currently scheduled for limited theatrical release on 1 November and rolls onto Netflix on 27 November, mark the dates now, we already have.
