Cape Town travelers flying to Doha will soon enjoy one of the most coveted luxuries in modern air travel – reliable, lightning-fast internet connectivity that actually works. Qatar Airways has announced plans to deploy a Boeing 777 equipped with SpaceX’s revolutionary Starlink internet service on the Cape Town-Doha route beginning June 1, 2025.
The addition of a Boeing 777 to operate one of the airline’s seven weekly flights between the two cities marks a significant upgrade for the route. While Qatar Airways will continue serving Cape Town primarily with its Airbus A350 aircraft, the introduction of the 777 brings with it the carrier’s celebrated Starlink connectivity, allowing passengers to stream, game, and work with fast speeds at cruising altitude.
First in Class
The announcement comes as Qatar Airways nears completion of its Starlink rollout across its Boeing 777 fleet. In what the airline describes as “another global first,” Qatar Airways has also begun equipping its Airbus A350 fleet with Starlink technology, making it the first airline worldwide to offer this cutting-edge connectivity on this aircraft type.
This development highlights Qatar Airways’ position at the forefront of in-flight technology. The airline currently holds several distinctions regarding Starlink implementation:
- First, largest, and only carrier in the Middle East and North Africa region offering fully complimentary Starlink service
- Operator of the world’s largest Starlink-equipped fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft
- First airline globally to begin Starlink installation on Airbus A350 aircraft
According to the airline, the service promises a frictionless “one-click-access” experience, eliminating the cumbersome connection processes that have long plagued in-flight Wi-Fi. For travelers accustomed to sluggish, unreliable airplane internet, the difference promises to be transformative.
Qatar Airways currently serves three South African destinations – Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg – with up to 28 weekly flights, connecting travelers to its global network spanning more than 170 destinations.
