Alcatel’s pen-toting OneTouch Scribe HD and OneTouch Hero now has a larger counterpart: meet the One Touch Hero 2. The 7.9mm thin device has a curved aluminum body, a reasonably light 175 gram weight and a 6-inch, edge-to-edge display. We should probably begin with the display, a 6-inch IPS TFT which has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080. Naturally, you have to do something with all of that real estate, which is why the Hero 2 comes with a stylus that the company promise will turn the device into a “creative enterprise tool.” Hyperbole aside, the Hero 1 impressed by being able to recognize a badly-scrawled equation at an odd angle, which it converted seamlessly into digital text and solved in mere seconds.

Performance wise, there’s an octa-core 2.0GHz MediaTek MT6592 paired with 2GB RAM hiding inside that aluminum chassis, nestled beside a 3,100mAh battery. Storage-wise, there’s 16GB tucked inside, and, perhaps a little disappointingly, you can only add in a further 32GB with a microSD card. The aluminum body is also reasonably svelte and solid, and you’d certainly not be laughed at if you pulled this out in a room full of Galaxy Note owners. We saw this coming with the OneTouch Alpha. Rounding out the spec list is the usual assortment of 3G/LTE bands, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, GPS, AGPS, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC that you’d expect from such a device that launches in 2014.

Then there is the Alcatel Smartwatch, which unfortunately does not run Google’s Android Wear. Alcatel’s Smartwatch has a USB charger based in the strap (akin to Nike’s SportWatch+GPS) and an optical heart rate monitor pressed into your skin, the unit offers a choice of watch faces, music control, notifications, camera shutter control and a compass. There’s no word as to when this magical device will head to retail, as yet.

According to Engadget, the company quietly began shipping the device yesterday, and it’ll set you back €350 in Europe. Info on local pricing and availability had not been announced at time this was published.

We’re not quite sure what it is yet, but Alcatel OneTouch has just invited us to save the date July 1st for a special event held in Johannesburg, in which it tells us “The beauty lies in the detail.” If this is indeed a new device, it alludes to a higher-res display, attention to design detail and greater sound; is this a likely contender to the Huawei P6 and 7? or simply in the ranks of the LG G3 and Samsung GS5? Hard to say at this point, but we’re keeping a pretty close eye out for more details. In the meantime, this is at least one more thing to look forward to in a couple weeks. Think we’re bluffing? See the invite capture above

Ahead of tonight’s #OneTouchSpeak event presented by Alcatel, the three new members of Alcatel’s One Touch family have silently slipped into the company’s local website. Could they be tonight’s show stoppers? The two handsets, the Idol S and the Idol Mini have been visible on the site for more than two months now – close approximate as the local site is linked to the global site. These two follow the original trio revealed at CES this year, sharing similar elements despite the difference in size. Both run Android 4.2+ can read microSD cards up to 32GB in capacity and support quad-band GSM, as well as some UMTS (3G) bands, depending on the model as specified on the website.

Unlike the first two, the third new Alcatel device is a tablet — the 9-mm-thin One Touch Evo 8 HD with 4G LTE that’s powered by a 1.6GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor. It only has 4GB of internal storage, but it supports cards up to 64GB in capacity. Despite revealing detailed specs, the company has yet to announce the devices’ pricing and availability, hopefully this will be tonight?
