Oddly enough, anything that Amazon has launched locally feels like yesterday’s news. Why? Because Amazon won’t stop launching new products, even so, South Africans still love their prints and hardcovers.

The company just revealed that the new Kindle Touch (R1999) is now available across SA at all Incredible Connection stores, noting that this guy’s using an IR touch system, similar to the latest Nook and Kobo, and there’s no keyboard (physical, anyway) to speak of. It’s slimmer, smaller and lighter than the existing Kindle, with a muted silver chassis that looks almost nothing like the Kindles of today. The entire user interface has been re-thought out, with “taps” being used in place of buttons. Need another reason to buy? We’re told that it’s using the company’s “most advanced” E Ink display yet, and while no specifics were doled out, “weeks long” was the term used to describe battery life.

Parents will love that they can give their kids a purpose-built e-reader with an easy-to-navigate touch interface, plus great features that help kids learn—Kindle FreeTime, Word Wise, and more—for just ZAR 1999

Little is known on the exact number of Kindle users in South Africa (Amazaon had not released comment by the time we published this) but that does not stop them from releasing their best selling books e-books for the duration June 1 […]

Little is known on the exact number of Kindle users in South Africa (Amazaon had not released comment by the time we published this) but that does not stop them from releasing their best selling <del datetime="2014-06-13T12:24:52+00:00">books</del> e-books for the duration June 1 2013 to May 31 2014. No surprises here as Inferno by David Brown came tops, the rest you can see after the jump. Amazon also took the opportunity to release their new Kindle Paperwhite which is said to boast a sharper 300-pixel-per-inch screen, allowing it to better compete with models like the Kobo Aura, which has a 265-ppi screen. Also it’s worth noting that E Ink makes the displays for basically all these e-readers, so it seems unlikely that Amazon would hold an exclusive on a 300-ppi panel — at least not for long. Local pricing and model variants are yet to confirmed.
