Founded in 1998 (yeah that far long ago), D-BOX Technologies are headquartered in Longueuil, Canada. The technology redefines and creates hyper-realistic, immersive entertainment experiences by moving the body and sparking the imagination through motion. As you might expect, the applications have grown considerably over the years with state-of-the-art technology designed to work seamlessly with any audio and video investment. The tech also allows for seamless integration into all theater sizes done so quickly and effortlessly.

The unique motion system is utilized on 660 screens in over 40 countries, this is thanks to the company’s collaboration with some of the biggest entertainment companies worldwide (Ster Kinekor included) to deliver new ways to enhance great stories. What’s also interesting is that the tech doesn’t only apply to movies but also extends to video games, virtual reality applications, themed entertainment and professional simulations.

Onto The More Technical Side…

According to its official website, “to create this unique experience requires highly-specialized hardware and software that store, manage and transmit motion codes to D-BOX-enabled cinema seats installed in your auditoriums. The result is an incredible cinematic motion experience that moves your seat in sync with the action on the screen to immerse viewers in the movie so they feel like they’re in it.”

The site goes on to state, “this kind of ‘magic’ requires much more than hardware and software. It takes the talent and virtuosity of our motion designers – gifted artists who design and program each and every movement of the D-BOX enabled cinema seats to reflect the action and emotion depicted in the movie. With over 190 films and more than 400 screens worldwide, D-BOX is a proven, immersive experience loved by millions.”

Aquaman is the last movie we got to see in this format and quite a fantastic experience it was…and for those wondering, yes we did watch the movie again this year…in D-BOX…again. Worth it? Definitely! Good thing is for all you who haven’t seen it, you still can as it’s still available to watch at quite a few Ster cinemas, however if that’s not your vibe then the below might be more your pace. It will also be your opportunity to experience D-BOX (if you haven’t already), in addition to the regular 2D movie watching experience, these titles will also be available in D-BOX:

We are officially partnering with the cool kids at Ster Kinekor Theatres and are giving away a whopping 4 double D-Box tickets to watch the scariest movie on the circuit at the moment, A Quiet Place, officially in cinemas on the 6th April. Ster-Kinekor is installing D-BOX, an immersive motion cinema seating technology at four theatres in Johannesburg (The Zone Rosebank and Mall of Africa), Cape Town (Cavendish Square), and Durban (Gateway Shopping Mall). Each theatre will be equipped with 50 D-BOX seats, amongst the regular seating. This will cater to a growing number of moviegoers who are looking for cutting-edge, premium entertainment experiences.

The first D-BOX-equipped auditorium has already opened at Mall of Africa. Officially launched on the 23 November, the launch came in conjunction with the release of Justice League.

The next D-BOX title releasing this year is the much anticipated Star Wars, The Last Jedi flick (lookout for our review soon!). If you’d like to check it out earlier then good news as Ster-Kinekor will be hosting pre-release screenings on all screens (IMAX & Ster-Kinekor screens) at 8pm this Thursday, 14 December.

No doubt this is literally going to redefine the term behind movie watching. I for one am super excited and can’t wait to officially check it out this Friday!
