Glen Powell, whom we like to call the new-age Ryan Reynolds, is quickly cementing himself as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand leading men. With a knack for blending action, comedy and just the right dash of seriousness, he’s carving out a lane that feels both familiar and refreshingly his own. How to Make a Killing sits comfortably in that sweet spot.

The film follows Powell’s character as he attempts to secure his rightful slice of a messy family inheritance, a setup that leans into chaos, suspicion and sharp-witted maneuvering. Think the quirky, self-aware storytelling style of the Knives Out franchise: playful narration, eccentric characters and a tone that flirts with absurdity without completely losing the plot.

It’s a straightforward story, easy to follow, and anchored by a lingering sense of intrigue that keeps you guessing, especially as it builds toward a twist worth sticking around for. This is precisely where Powell thrives. The role fits him like a glove, allowing him to flex that effortless charm that’s quickly becoming his trademark.

The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that works in its favour. It taps into a proven formula, stylish mystery meets comedic timing, that continues to resonate when executed well. That said, it’s not flawless. A few antics stretch believability a little too far, and the script could’ve been tightened to sharpen its impact. Still, as an enjoyable, switch-off-your-brain watch, it absolutely delivers.

Powell is joined by a strong supporting cast, including Margaret Qualley (Maid, Happy Gilmore), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist, The Matrix Resurrections), and the legendary Ed Harris (A Beautiful Mind, Westworld).

If you haven’t been paying attention to Powell’s run, where have you been? From Anyone but You to Hit Man (and more on the way), his catalogue is growing fast, and wisely chosen.

Shout out to Sun Africa Group for hosting the pre-screening.

Verdict: If you’re after a dose of stylish, slightly silly escapism, a film that entertains without demanding too much, How to Make a Killing is right up your alley.

Conceptually, Westworld (we reckon) is one of the best TV shows around. We were most captivated by it in S1 with S2 we felt was lacking a bit and consequently we gave up on midway through. It’s back for another season and we’re going to make an effort to catch up on the remaining episodes we missed. Why? Well anything from HBO is enough to have us hooked generally, and second, the latest season looks absolutely fantastic, the trailer alone is enough to convince us:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64CYajemh6E&t=1s

The hit HBO series is generally a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the birth of a new form of life on Earth, exploring a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.

Returning cast members include Golden Globe nominee Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores, Emmy winner Thandie Newton as Maeve, Oscar nominee Ed Harris as Man in Black, Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Wright as Bernard, People’s Choice nominee Tessa Thompson as Charlotte, and Screen Actors Guild nominees Luke Hemsworth as Stubbs and Rodrigo Santoro as Hector Escaton.

New faces this season include Golden Globe nominee Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Emmy winner Lena Waithe (Master of None, A Black Lady Sketch Show), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan), Lena Waithe (A Black Lady Sketch Show, Master of None), Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Marshawn Lynch (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom), Michael Ealy (Stumptown) and Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy).

You (like us) are probably in need of catching up after seeing all the above, Showmax has S1-2 available here. S3 is scheduled for both the streaming service as well as on M-Net every Monday, starting 16 March 2020. More than enough time to catch-up before then we reckon, better start now.
