Ford South Africa has officially pulled the covers off its updated 2026 Ford Territory, an SUV that is squarely aiming to redefine the value-for-money segment in the local market.

Building on the established popularity of the previous model, this refresh introduces sharper design language, upgraded in-car technology, and a more mature presence on the road.

Ford has structured the new Territory lineup into three distinct grades.

The entry-level Ambiente model starts the range at R534 900. Moving up the ladder, the mid-tier Trend model is positioned at R584 900. At the pinnacle of the lineup sits the Titanium variant, priced at R643 900.

A New Look And Feel

The visual update is immediately apparent, with Ford adopting a more confident and mature design language for the 2026 model. The front end has undergone a significant transformation, featuring a chiseled hood and a redesigned grille that emphasises the vehicle’s width for a more muscular, imposing silhouette.

The signature L-shaped laser headlights now feature ultra-compact LED lens modules, which not only improve night-time visibility but also provide a modern, technical aesthetic.

These exterior changes are complemented by two fresh paint options, Cactus Grey and Oasis Green.

Tech-Focused Cabin

Inside, the dashboard is now dominated by a redesigned dual 12.3-inch infotainment display that brings the Territory’s user interface up to date with modern expectations.

Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto comes standard with the inclusion of Arkamys 3D audio software. Ford has also introduced app connectivity for this model, allowing owners to remotely lock, unlock, and monitor their vehicle status directly from their smartphone.

Performance And Practicality

Under the bonnet, Ford has retained the proven 1.8-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine. It produces 138 kW of power and 318 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that utilises a rotary e-shifter on the centre console.

Ford South Africa is preparing to bolster its SUV portfolio with an updated version of the Territory. While the model remains in its early lifecycle – having only debuted locally in 2024 – the 2026 model year refresh focuses on a more modern visual identity and the introduction of long-awaited digital connectivity features.

The most immediate change for the 2026 Territory is the front-end design, which adopts a sleeker, more streamlined aesthetic. The outgoing hexagonal mesh grille has been replaced by a more sophisticated design featuring horizontal chrome lines. Flanking this are reworked headlights with prominent LED daytime running lights that wrap around the grille, providing a more cohesive look that aligns with Ford’s global design language.

To complement the new front-end, Ford has also introduced two new exterior paint hues: Cactus Grey and Oasis Green. The updates are rounded out by new alloy wheel designs, which give the SUV a more premium stance on the road.

Perhaps the biggest functional upgrade is the introduction of official Ford App connectivity. For the first time, Territory owners in South Africa will be able to remotely interact with their vehicles via a smartphone. This integration allows for a higher level of convenience, enabling owners to check vehicle status and access specific functions from outside the cabin.

Inside, the cabin remains focused on family-centric ergonomics, though subtle refinements have been made to the trim materials. Ford has replaced previous interior finishes with new silver accents and a revised two-tone upholstery theme that aims to elevate the cabin’s tactile feel.

Under the hood, the 2026 Territory retains the powertrain that established its reputation in the local market. It continues to be powered by the 1.8-liter turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine, which produces 138kW of power and 318Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

While the hardware remains familiar, Ford has optimised the vehicle’s drive modes and adaptive cruise control systems (available on Trend and Titanium derivatives) to work more harmoniously with the powertrain, ensuring a smooth experience during both daily urban commutes and extended family road trips.

Market Positioning and Pricing

Ford South Africa has confirmed that the updated Territory will go on sale in the “coming weeks.” Despite the added features and aesthetic refresh, the company has opted to maintain its competitive pricing strategy.

The Ford Ranger has maintained a dominant position in the South African Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment since its current generation debuted three years ago. For 2026, Ford South Africa is moving to cement that lead by fundamentally restructuring the Silverton-assembled lineup. The refresh isn’t just aesthetic; it introduces a new petrol powertrain to the local market and significantly broadens the availability of its flagship V6 turbodiesel. Let’s get into it.

While the overall silhouette remains the same, the 2026 Ranger adopts a more aggressive visual identity. Ford is moving away from bright chrome accents, replacing them with a mix of gloss-black and matte-black finishes across the exterior and interior.

The most notable change is found at the front end, where the signature “C-Clamp” LED headlamps now flank a revised grille treatment. Depending on the trim, buyers will see more blacked-out detailing on the wing mirror housings and door handles. Fresh wheel designs have also been added to the catalog to complement the new look, along with an updated palette of exterior paint colors—including the exclusive “Chill Grey” for select limited editions.

The most significant technical addition to the 2026 portfolio is the introduction of the 2.3l EcoBoost petrol engine. While this power plant is a staple of Ford’s global performance catalog, its specific tuning for the Ranger delivers 222kW of power and 452Nm of torque.

This move signals a strategic play for buyers who prioritise athletic on-road refinement over traditional diesel characteristics. The EcoBoost engine has been designated as the primary heart for the Wildtrak 4×2 and the newly introduced Ranger Sport 4×2, offering a high-output alternative for those who use their bakkies primarily in urban or highway environments.

Ford is also responding to high demand for its 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel by expanding its availability. Previously reserved for the highest-tier flagships, the V6 which produces 184kW and 600Nm will now power a wider selection of the range.

Most notably, the Wildtrak Super Cab 4×4 and the off-road-focused Ranger Tremor are being upgraded to the V6 as standard, replacing the previous 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo unit. This change specifically targets the towing and overlanding community, ensuring that the 3500kg maximum towing capacity is backed by the effortless torque delivery of the six-cylinder engine.

Slotting into the increasingly crowded space between the leisure-focused XLT and the premium Wildtrak is the new Ranger Sport. Available in both Super Cab and Double Cab configurations, the Sport derivative is designed to be the “sweet spot” for dual-purpose users.

Buyers of the Sport can choose between two distinct personalities: a 4×2 model equipped with the new 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine or a high-capability 4×4 version powered by the 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel. Both options are paired exclusively with Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission, which has now been standardised across every automatic model in the 2026 range.

While the high-performance engines grab the headlines, the high-volume 2.0-litre Single-Turbo diesel engine has received a critical mechanical update. Ford has introduced a new timing chain system designed to enhance long-term durability and simplify maintenance schedules.

This engine remains the backbone of the XL and XLT series, producing 125kW and 405Nm. By pairing this upgraded engine with the 10-speed automatic across more models, Ford is aiming to improve fuel efficiency and torque delivery for fleet and business owners who rely on the Ranger as a primary work tool.

The 2026 lineup now comprises 23 derivatives, representing one of the most comprehensive bakkie portfolios in the country. This includes the entry-level XL models, which have been streamlined to focus on low operating costs for business customers, and the ultra-luxurious Platinum variant which continues to lead the range in comfort and technology.

At the top of the pyramid, the Ranger Raptor remains unchanged mechanically, continuing to utilise its race-developed suspension and 292kW twin-turbo V6 petrol engine. Meanwhile, the Wildtrak X has transitioned from a standalone model to an optional performance package, allowing Wildtrak owners to customise the level of off-road intensity they require without sacrificing the premium features of the standard V6 platform.

Ford South Africa has officially launched its revamped vehicle modification programme – Ford Pro Convertor (FPC) – designed to provide commercial customers with factory-backed custom vehicle solutions. The new initiative replaces the company’s previous Qualified Vehicle Modifiers (QVM) programme with a refreshed approach aligned to Ford’s global commercial vehicle strategy.

The programme enables Ford-approved conversion specialists to modify the company’s Ranger, Everest, and Transit product lines for specialised commercial and industrial applications while maintaining the integrity of factory warranties and dealer support networks.

“The Ford Pro Convertor launch demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, customised commercial vehicle solutions that empower businesses and organisations across South Africa,” says Tracey Delate, General Manager of Direct Sales Operations at Ford South Africa. “Our comprehensive approval and support framework ensures that each conversion is done to exacting standards without compromising vehicle functionality, safety, or warranty. Whether it’s a mobile clinic, an emergency vehicle, or a specialised mining support truck, Ford Pro Convertor conversions provides peace of mind and reliable operation tailored to the customers’ unique requirements.”

Comprehensive Conversion Portfolio

The FPC programme supports a wide range of vehicle modifications to meet diverse commercial needs across multiple industries. Common conversions include:

Dropside bakkies with fold-down sides for enhanced loading flexibility

Emergency response vehicles and ambulances

Armoured protection vehicles

Mining and construction support vehicles

Mobile clinics and medical response units

Specialised security vehicles

Each conversion undergoes Ford’s rigorous approval and auditing processes to ensure they meet the company’s stringent quality standards, maintain functional integrity, and preserve the original factory warranty on all unmodified components.

Streamlined Customer Experience

The conversion process has been designed with customer convenience in mind. The journey begins at any Ford dealership, where customers are directed to approved conversion partners capable of meeting their specific requirements.

After detailed consultations and quotation processes, and once payment or financing is arranged, the dealer coordinates directly with the approved convertor to execute the modifications. While most conversions are completed within 4-6 weeks, timelines can vary based on the complexity of individual projects.

Warranty Protection and Legal Compliance

A key advantage of the Ford Pro Convertor programme is its comprehensive warranty coverage. The original factory warranty remains valid for all non-modified components, while the conversion itself is covered by the approved convertor’s warranty – matched to Ford’s standard four-year or 120,000-kilometer factory coverage.

Upon completion, customers receive a Homologation Certificate confirming the vehicle’s legal status in its converted form. This documentation ensures the vehicle can be legally registered and operated in its modified state, and can be resold without the need to revert to its original specifications.

Customised Pricing Structure

Given the diverse nature of commercial vehicle modifications, Ford has implemented a tailored pricing approach. Rather than fixed conversion packages, quotes are developed based on each customer’s specific requirements and modification scope. This ensures businesses receive exactly what they need without paying for unnecessary features.

The FPC programme provides South African businesses with access to customised vehicle solutions backed by Ford’s comprehensive dealer network, spares availability, and service infrastructure – crucial factors for operations that depend on vehicle reliability and minimal downtime.

For more information about Ford Pro Convertor services or to discuss specific conversion requirements, interested parties can contact their nearest Ford dealer.

Striking the Perfect Balance Between Rugged and Refined

When Ford handed me the keys to a crisp white Everest Sport with contrasting black trim, I wasn’t quite prepared for how this SUV would reshape my expectations of what a family-friendly off-roader could be.

The automotive landscape is crowded with SUVs promising to do it all – family hauler during the week, adventure vehicle on weekends. Most fall short in one area or another. Either they’re too focused on off-road prowess at the expense of on-road comfort, or they’re glorified shopping carts with all-wheel drive that wouldn’t dare venture beyond a gravel parking lot.

Ford’s Everest has always occupied an interesting middle ground in this segment. Built on the same platform as the ranger-topping Ranger bakkie, it inherits genuine off-road DNA while wrapping it in a more family-appropriate seven-seat package. The Sport trim level aims to add a dash of visual flair and premium touches without compromising the vehicle’s utilitarian roots.

After spending a week with the Everest Sport – taking it on work and meeting runs, grocery trips, highway sprints, and even a brief off-road excursion – I’ve developed a clear picture of where this vehicle excels and where compromises have been made. The Arctic White paint with black accents on my test vehicle provided the perfect canvas to showcase the Everest Sport’s dual personality: refined enough for urban duties yet rugged enough to tackle adventures beyond the pavement.

First Impressions Matter

The Everest Sport makes a statement even before you climb inside. The Arctic White paint job on my test vehicle created a striking contrast against the black grille, side mirrors, and roof rails. The blacked-out badging and 20-inch alloy wheels further enhance its purposeful stance without drifting into overly aggressive territory.

There’s something inherently appealing about this colour combination – it manages to look both premium and ready for adventure, which perfectly encapsulates what the Everest Sport is all about.

Inside Story: Comfort Meets Practicality

Stepping into the cabin reveals Ford’s commitment to creating a space that balances comfort with functionality. The Sport trim brings leather-accented seats with contrast stitching that look upmarket while remaining family-friendly. The driver’s position offers excellent visibility, and the 8-way power-adjustable seat made finding the perfect driving position effortless. It’s a comfortable place to find yourself.

The second row provides ample space for adults, and the third row, while not quite as spacious, remains usable for kids, teenagers or shorter trips. What impressed me most was how quiet the cabin remained, even at highway speeds – a testament to Ford’s sound insulation efforts.

The 12-inch touchscreen running Ford’s SYNC system sits prominently on the dashboard, offering crisp graphics and relatively intuitive menus. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity worked flawlessly throughout my week with the vehicle.

On the Road: Smooth Operator

The Everest Sport’s 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel engine delivers 154kW and 500Nm of torque – numbers that translate to confident acceleration and effortless highway cruising. The 10-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly in most situations, though I noticed occasional hesitation when demanding quick downshifts for overtaking.

What truly stands out is the ride quality. The Everest Sport strikes an impressive balance between comfort and control, soaking up urban imperfections while maintaining composure through corners. It’s no sports car, but it handles with reassuring predictability that belies its size and height.

Off the Beaten Path

While many Everest Sports will spend most of their time navigating suburban streets, Ford hasn’t forgotten about off-road capabilities. The Terrain Management System offers various drive modes, including Sand, Mud/Ruts, and Snow/Gravel, adjusting throttle response and traction control accordingly.

During a brief excursion on some light trails, the Everest Sport demonstrated impressive capability, with the 4WD system providing confident traction. The 800mm wading depth also provides peace of mind when facing water crossings, though I didn’t have the opportunity to test this feature fully.

Practical Considerations

Daily livability is where the Everest Sport really shines. The powered tailgate reveals a generous cargo area that expands dramatically with the third row folded. Throughout the cabin, thoughtful storage solutions abound – from the deep center console to the various cubbies and cup holders.

Fuel economy averaged around 9.2L/100km during my mixed driving, which is reasonable for a vehicle of this size and capability. The 80-liter fuel tank provides a theoretical range of over 800km, making the Everest Sport a capable long-distance cruiser.

The Everest Sport comes well-equipped with driver assistance features including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and autonomous emergency braking. The 360-degree camera system proved invaluable when navigating tight parking spots, though I found the resolution could be much more sharper.

Not Quite Perfect

Despite its many strengths, the Everest Sport isn’t without shortcomings. The third row, while usable, requires some gymnastics to access, and the seats themselves lack the comfort of the first two rows. Some interior plastics lower in the cabin feel out of place in a vehicle at this price point.

The infotainment system, while generally responsive, occasionally suffered from lag when switching between functions. And while the black trim elements look fantastic against the white paint, they do show dust and fingerprints more readily than body-coloured alternatives.

Final Thoughts

The Ford Everest Sport occupies a sweet spot in the midsize SUV market. It offers genuine off-road capability without sacrificing on-road manners, combines practical family-friendly features with handsome styling, and delivers a driving experience that’s both comfortable and engaging.

The white-with-black-trim configuration of my test vehicle particularly impressed, giving the Everest Sport a premium appearance that belies its rugged capabilities. For families seeking a do-it-all vehicle that won’t look out of place at school drop-offs or campgrounds, the Everest Sport makes a compelling case for itself.

It’s not perfect – no vehicle is – but the Everest Sport’s blend of versatility, comfort, and capability makes it easy to overlook its minor shortcomings. In an increasingly crowded SUV market, Ford has created something that genuinely stands out.

The highly anticipated seventh-generation Mustang is set to make its debut in Mzansi soon, offering a thrilling blend of cutting-edge technology, a powerful V8 engine, and a timeless design. While Ford SA is mum about the exact arrival of this beast, lets have a closer look at the tech you can look forward to once the new model becomes available.

A Tech-Savvy Cockpit

Stepping inside the new Mustang is like entering a fighter jet cockpit. Dual customisable digital displays provide drivers with all the information they need in a sleek and modern layout. The 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster utilises the Unreal Engine 3D tool, allowing drivers to personalise drive mode settings with real-time graphical renderings. This immersive experience extends to the 13.2-inch SYNC® 4 center stack, seamlessly integrated behind a single piece of glass.

Comfort and Convenience

The Mustang’s interior isn’t just about tech; it’s about comfort too. Black Onyx leather seats with heating and cooling functions ensure a pleasant ride regardless of the weather. The center console features a wireless charging pad, while additional USB ports above the cockpit cater to devices like track cameras. A premium B&O sound system with 12 speakers further elevates the driving experience.

Unleashing Power

The heart of the Mustang GT lies in its advanced 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, the most powerful ever offered in a Mustang GT. This engine boasts 328kW of peak power and 540Nm of torque, paired with a refined 10-speed automatic transmission.

Embrace the Drive

Ford understands the joy of customisation. Mustang offers six selectable Drive Modes (Normal, Sport, Slippery, Drag, Track, and a customizable setting) that adjust steering effort, engine response, and electronic stability control to suit your driving style. The Mustang GT in South Africa includes the Performance Pack, adding features like a limited-slip differential, active suspension, and wider tires for enhanced track performance.

Advanced Safety Features

The new Mustang prioritises safety with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies. These include Speed Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering Assist, and Evasive Steer Assist. Additionally, the Performance Pack with MagneRide suspension features Active Pothole Mitigation, which adjusts suspension response to smoothen out rough roads.

Stay Connected

Elsewhere, the FordPass app allows owners to remotely start and stop their Mustang, lock and unlock doors, and even schedule a start time. It also provides valuable vehicle information like fuel levels, service history, and warranty details.

Stay tuned for more updates on the arrival of the new Ford Mustang.

In the current local auto landscape, there are essentially only two categories of vehicle types that collectively make up over 80% of new vehicle purchases: Crossover/SUVs and hatches. The Ford Puma Titanium is firmly in the former category. In this review, we assess and answer burning questions as to what the 2023 Ford Puma is and the need for it to truly exist – especially at that extortionate price point.

What is it?

Well, the Ford Puma is a subcompact crossover SUV that combines practicality with a fun driving experience. Previously offered in the 90s as a sporty coupe, the Puma has been completely revamped for the modern market. For better clarity one could say its a grown-up version of the then Fiesta. It comes in to replace both the Fiesta and EcoSport which have now been discontinued in Mzansi.

In terms of first impressions, the Ford Puma boasts a look that’s both purposeful and undeniably head-turning. It defies the sometimes boxy aesthetic of its rivals, boasting a sleek profile that incorporates a sloping roofline for a touch of sporty flair which, unfortunately, sacrifices functionality for form.

The front fascia is undeniably Ford with its prominent grille and sharp projector headlights, but there’s a hint of feline inspiration in the design. The headlights themselves have a cat-eye-like quality, adding a touch of charisma. The muscular lines along the flanks and flared arches hint at the Puma’s dynamic capabilities. The rear doesn’t disappoint either, with stylish oblong LED taillights that wrap neatly around the tailgate.

However, where the Puma truly sets itself apart is in its trim level offerings. The Titanium model features polished lines and thoughtful design that prioritize comfort and a touch of elegance. The ST-Line, on the other hand, dials up the sportiness with body-coloured cladding, more aggressive bumpers, and larger wheels. This transformation is completed with a prominent rear spoiler, ensuring everyone on the road knows you mean business.

The Puma competes with other popular compact crossovers like the Volkswagen T-Roc, Hyundai Kona, and Volkswagen Taigo. Other options include the Renault Captur, Opel Mokka, and even the Audi Q2 for those wanting a premium feel.

While the Puma’s exterior boasts a modern and sleek design, stepping inside reveals an interior that feels a touch behind the curve. The overall layout, with its physical buttons and non-premium materials, bears a resemblance to the Ford EcoSport.

It’s not necessarily unpleasant, but it fails to match the forward-thinking design of the exterior and the rest of the Ford line-up. This sense of familiarity extends to the technology on offer, which feels adequate rather than groundbreaking. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the packaging. Its worth noting that the Puma only reached our shores a few years later than its global debut.

Elsewhere, the sloping roofline, while aesthetically pleasing on the outside, cuts into rear headroom significantly. Overall legroom is nothing to write home about either as tall passagers’ knees would rub against the front row seats. Uncomfortably so. This makes the Puma best suited for shorter passengers or occasional use in the back. On the bright side, the boot space behind the rear seats is generous, redeeming some practicality points.

Stop complaining, what is it like to drive?

Behind the wheel of the Ford Puma Titanium, the initial impression of a familiar interior fades away. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is a revelation. Forget the sluggish EcoBoost experiences of years past; this little powerhouse punches well above its weight. It delivers surprising pep, reminding me of the energetic Volkswagen Polo TSI engines. Pressing the pedal unleashes a surge of confidence-inspiring power, perfect for navigating city traffic or quick highway maneuvers.

The Puma handles beautifully, with sharp reflexes and a surprisingly engaging driving experience. It feels far more connected to the road than the average crossover.

The only caveat to this praiseworthy performance is the fuel economy. My city driving resulted in an average of 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers. While not terrible, it might be a turnoff for those seeking maximum efficiency. However, for those who prioritize a peppy and enjoyable drive, the Puma Titanium is a worth considering.

Should you really consider the Ford Puma Titanium?

With a price tag of R570,400 for the Puma Titanium, it lands right in the thick of the compact crossover battleground. Compared to rivals like the VW T-Roc or Hyundai Kona, pricing is fairly competitive.

Let’s talk practicality. While the Puma’s boot space is a saving grace, rear headroom is definitely a compromise, especially for taller passengers. The interior, while comfortable enough for daily commutes, starts to feel a tad dated with its reliance on physical buttons and the Sync 3 system, which is starting to show its age. Speaking of tech, it’s a bit of a bummer that both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t wireless at this price point. It’s a small gripe, but a missed convenience nonetheless.

Overall, the Puma Titanium is a fun and funky crossover that offers a surprising amount of punch from its 1.0-litre engine. It handles well and delivers a confident driving experience. If you prioritize a pleasurable drive over cutting-edge tech and a spacious rear cabin, the Puma is definitely worth considering.

However, for those seeking the most up-to-date features and maximum passenger space, competing options might be a better fit. Ultimately, the choice boils down to your priorities. If you crave a bit of spice in your daily commute, the Puma Titanium might just surprise you.

It’s been a very long time coming. So long that I’m almost shaking at the thought of writing this First Impressions piece on the new Ford Ranger. As intimidating as it may seem, we jetted off to Cape Town as guests of Ford South Africa to sample the new Ranger. let’s get right into unpacking my experience of this much loved bakkie.

The new generation Ford Ranger is a mid-size bakkie that is designed to meet the needs of both urban and rural drivers. With its brand new rugged and durable construction, advanced technology, and powerful performance, the Ranger is a versatile vehicle that can handle a wide range of tasks and activities.

One of the first things that you will notice about the new Ranger is its striking and aggressive design. The front of the truck has been completely redesigned and now features a bold grille and sleek headlights that give it a bold and imposing look. Those C-shaped daytime LED lights are a looker, even from your reverse mirror. The body of the truck is also designed to be aerodynamic, which helps to reduce wind resistance and improve fuel efficiency. I couldn’t help but notice how much bigger the shoulders of the vehicle have grown, compared to the outgoing model.

Under the bonnet, the Ranger is powered by a choice of either a 2.0-litre Single Turbo and Bi-Turbo in-line four-cylinder diesel engines as well as Ford’s proven 3.0L V6 turbodiesel. The latter, only found in the Wildtrak derivative, is a powerful engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which helps to provide smooth and responsive acceleration. Its certainly a favourite. But if we’re being honest, you’d be perfectly fine off with the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo engine. Trust me.

The Ranger also comes with a variety of advanced driver assistance features, such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera.

There’s also a variety of advanced technology features that make it one of the most connected and convenient bakkies on the market. It comes with Ford’s SYNC 4A infotainment system, which allows you to easily control your audio, navigation, ventilation and other features using voice commands. All mated to a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment display. It’s super clear and responds quickly to the touch. A needed improvement compared to the outgoing model. As with all Ford models of late, there’s support for FordPass too. FordPass enhances the ownership experience with features like remote start, vehicle status check and health alerts, digital owner’s manual and remote lock and unlock functions via your mobile device.

If we’re being honest, you’d be perfectly fine with the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo engine.

When it comes to cargo and towing capacity, the Ranger is one of the most capable bakkies in its class. The Ranger can tow up to 3500 kg when properly equipped. The Ranger also comes with a variety of bed and cargo management features, such as a bed liner and a built-in cargo management system. Circling back to towing, the Ranger has a Tow Haul drive mode for use whilst towing or carrying heavy loads. It optimises gear shift timing to maintain best power delivery and engine braking and reduced shift busyness.

As is the norm, the Ranger also comes with a variety of off-road features that make it well-suited for those off-road adventures. The bakkie comes with a 4×4 drivetrain and a variety of off-road modes, such as mud, sand, and rock. The Ranger also comes with a variety of suspension and tyre options, which allow you to customize your bakkie to meet your specific off-road needs.

With a growing list of over 200 factory-backed adventure, urban and commercial accessories, you will be able to personalise the Rangers to suit your unique lifestyle.

Overall, the new generation Ford Ranger is a versatile and capable bakkie that is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of drivers. With its rugged and durable construction, advanced technology, and powerful performance, the Ranger is a bakkie that can handle a wide range of tasks and activities. Whether you are looking for a truck for work or for play, the Ranger is a great choice.

Pricing for the new Ford Ranger starts at R486 600. But if you’re eyeing the Double Cab Wildtrak with the V6 engine, that will set you back R953 500.

The popularity of compact-size SUVs continues to increase every year, and that has meant that almost every major manufacturer now has at least one entry into the segment. With so many other rivals to contend with, it’s getting harder and harder to stand out from the crowd. However, one manufacturer that has done an excellent job of establishing itself as a leader in the segment is Ford, with its popular EcoSport CSUV.

Part of the reason that buyers keep coming back to the EcoSport is its value for money, as it undercuts other rivals on price but sort of beats them on build quality and finish.

For the 2022 model year, Ford hasn’t changed much about the car, save for adding enhancements to the looks and some extra tech features. But then, it didn’t need to. Cause, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Capable Trend 1.0 EcoBoost Automatic Engine

There’s only one engine option available for the EcoSport Active, and it’s carried over from the previous model year. Every trim comes equipped with Ford’s Trend 1.0 EcoBoost Automatic Engine pumping out 92kW of power and 170Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission as standard.

The EcoSport Active isn’t the fastest SUV in its class. However, it comes with front-wheel drive as standard.

Stylish, yet familiar exterior

The EcoSport Active features lightly refreshed looks, with a blackened grille, headlamp surround and foglamp bezels, as well as sporty black front and rear skirts. The athletic demeanour is further emphasized with black wheel arch mouldings and the adoption of 17-inch Active design black alloy wheels for a more “muscular stance”, Ford says. But, that’s pretty much it in terms of styling updates, and from a distance, it’s tricky to spot the difference between an Active model car and a normal model year.

That’s no bad thing, as the EcoSport has been one of the best-looking cars in the segment since its launch. It’s certainly distinctive, and it’s also available in a variety of colors, with three new options available. Frozen White and three distinctive metallic options comprising eye-catching Luxe Yellow, Solar Silver and Magnetic dark grey.

Surprisingly well fitted interior

Considering the low starting price of the EcoSport, even base-spec versions feel surprisingly premium to sit in. This Active trim is even more upmarket and offer a level of fit and finish that’s most comparable to luxury rivals. The EcoSport Active comes packed with features including cruise control, electric windows all-round, air-conditioning and an eight-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system with built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Configurable seating

The main purpose of any SUV of this size is to be a family hauler, and the EcoSport can seat up to five passengers in comfort. The second row is a bit cramped, but that’s not unusual for the segment, and anyway, there’s still plenty of room back there for children or smaller adults.

The second-row seats can also be folded to create room for large or oddly shaped cargo. Child seat anchors are also in plentiful supply.

Impressive cargo capacity

As well as passengers, a family SUV needs to be capable of hauling plenty of cargo, and the EcoSport Active doesn’t disappoint in this respect either. A total of 334 litres space is available with the second row up, and the concealed storage is loaded.

Integrated infotainment

The EcoSport Active is chock full of the latest infotainment and connectivity features, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also features a 8″ touchscreen. Carried over from the previous year are the EcoSport USB ports and power outlets, which are handy for keeping phones and other mobile devices fully charged on longer journeys. There are enough ports for every passenger.

Another innovative feature included as standard on this model is the FordPass Connect system, which includes an embedded modem that allows you to connect with the car and control a number of vehicle functions from your smartphone via the FordPass app. You could also view useful information such as fuel level and vehicle health alerts, the owner can also remotely lock, unlock and even remotely start the car (automatic models only) to cool or heat the cabin.

Plenty of driver-assistance technology

Safety is always paramount in a family hauler, and the EcoSport Active has a full suite of driver-assistance features to help keep its occupants safe at all times. Standard features include seven airbags (dual front, side, curtain and a driver’s knee airbag), along with ABS brakes with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and Hill Launch Assist (HLA). Rear parking sensors are fitted, and the vehicle is equipped with a high-grade Thatcham alarm with immobiliser.

Competitive fuel economy

Given that petrol prices only seem to be on a one-way trend upwards in recent months, it’s becoming more important than ever to consider a car’s efficiency when deciding what to buy. The EcoSport Active isn’t the most efficient SUV in the segment, but its ratings remain competitive, putting it in the middle of the pack. Ford rates it at 5.8l per 100km.

Generous warranty

Ford’s warranty is among the most generous on the market right now. It’s certainly not the kind you get from Hyundai or Chery, but it is decent. A bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the first four years or 60,000 miles, and the powertrain is covered for ten years or 120 000km. A four-year unlimited km roadside assistance plan is also available. As is the five-year/unlimited distance corrosion warranty. The recommended service interval is 15 000km or annually, whichever occurs first.

Low starting price

As mentioned previously, the Ford EcoSport Active is remarkably good value for the number of features that buyers get. The car is priced at R393 700.

The key selling point of the EcoSport Active is that it provides more features and better build quality than most of its competitors, all while undercutting them on price. It’s by no means perfect.

Ford South Africa has earlier today announced that its project to go green at its Silverton Assembly plant by installing a large solar panel array at the facility is now complete. Ford teamed up with SolarAfrica to install the solar array and it now stands as the largest solar installation that Ford has in Africa. The solar panels installed will are able to generate 13.5 megawatt of power.

Ford and SolarAfrica have placed 30 226 solar panels, 120 inverters and eight transformers at the facility to generate clean electricity that will go back to the grid. All of that will generate 35% of the Silverton plant’s electricity requirements – which is equivalent to powering almost 224 000 light bulbs, or 12 171 average households, for an entire year.

Ford uses the Silverton Assembly plant to build the Ranger bakkie for domestic sales and exports to over 100 global markets,

According to Ford, the installation took 599 days and 35 000 man-hours to complete and supported 121 jobs amongst sub-contractors involved in the construction and installation. Approximately 59 tons of steel and 315 tons of aluminium were used for the locally manufactured solar carports.

Ford has now revealed the next-generation Ranger, and the mid-size bakkie is packed with features and promises improved capability compared to the current model. Ford says it collaborated with its customers around the world to develop a more versatile and desirable bakkie than ever before.

Following the new Ranger’s debut, there’s a few things we’ve been more curious about than anything else, and that is all the tech found in the new bakkie.

One of the biggest changes inside the bakkie is the addition of a large portrait-mode touchscreen. Two varied sizes are available depending on the trim level, including a 10.1-inch and a 12-inch screen. The big screens go along with the fully digital instrument cluster. In addition, Ranger will also have an embedded FordPass modem providing connectivity to devices in the car and features such as remote starting, remote vehicle status reports, and the ability to lock and unlock the doors from a smartphone.

The large screen also gives drivers access to the 360-degree camera view in some models making parking easier and allowing drivers to see what’s going on around the vehicle when off-roading.

Other interesting touches for the new Ranger include zone lighting, which can be controlled using the Sync screen or the FordPass app. Zone lighting is a 360-degree lighting system around the truck designed to improve visibility. Lighting is also provided inside the cargo box underneath the left and right handrails to provide light for loading or unloading cargo.

Along with the development of the truck, Ford is also developing its own accessories and working with third parties like ARB. A full range of 150 factory-backed accessories for work and play will be available for the new Ranger.

Details such as availability and pricing should be offered closer to launch.

Brand identity is a tricky thing to get right. If the third-generation Ranger had a problem, it was that it was just too similar, from the front at least, to Ford’s SYNC. That’s not a bad looking bakkie, no, but if you weren’t confusing many of its other derivatives to the Wildtrak, its (very much similar) sibling, you were probably questioning its softer aesthetics compared to most rival bakkies.

There is, for better or worse, a design language we expect from bakkies. While practicality is king, they also have to look burly and tough; we expect road presence and a sense of invulnerability, too. The original Ranger was odd-looking enough that the conversation instantly shifted to that love-it-or-hate-it appearance, but Ford’s third attempt – and with the XLT Double Cab deriv – was just close enough to a family SUV to be an outlier in its segment. Much like the Everest, or is it the other way around?

Ironically, of course, a family-minded bakkie is just what the Ranger always has been, and what it excels at. Driving one is a reminder that bakkies don’t need to be lumpy and coarse; they don’t need to wallow and flex across pockmarked asphalt. The Ranger’s issue was that it looked a little too much like the SUV it drove like, and so that’s what Ford has changed.

The 2021 Ranger FX4 gets a sporty black mesh grille up front. The grille is beefier and more dominant, with wider, scalloped mesh. It even looks like its more upright, too, between a set of LED daytime running headlamps, while the bonnet bulges to emphasize the standard 2.0l engine.

Other improvements include a set of 18-inch multi-spoke black alloy wheels, plus black mirrors and door handles, and – edging on a little too much for my tastes – various FX4 decals and emblems. Alternatively there are more practically-minded options packs, like the Ranger XL, XLS and XLT.

Pricing starts at R618 900 (4×2) and climbs to R687 900 for the 4×4 version.

The new garb hasn’t diluted the Ranger FX4’s core usability, though, and that’s what stands out most. Bakkies are a playground for automakers looking to throw in some cunning cubbies and tie-downs, but the Ford arguably got that first with its imaginatively usable extras. Like the drop-in bedliner which protects the bin from damage during everyday use, with six cargo tie-down points provided.

In addition there’s a practical 12-volt power socket is provided in the bedliner, which is ideal for powering a portable fridge or other accessories. Two further 12-volt sockets are located in the front of the cabin. It’s one of my favourite bakkie features.

Compared to the AWD systems on rival bakkies, the FX4 is positively space-age. On the road, it contributes significantly to how SUV-like the FX4 feels: planted and steady, with the suspension level and predictable, and none of that unexpected squirming some bakkies can suffer when they’re underloaded and you suddenly turn things up. The 10-speed automatic transmission is dependable and shifts with greater urgency if you tap the shifter into Sport mode.

I’m of a mind that, for the target audience – and, quite frankly, most bakkie drivers were they to buy with their head not their heart – this is more than enough. If your motivation to get a bakkie is for those occasional times you need to haul something, the FX4 will probably be up to the task. The rest of the time you can drive it as comfortably as you would around Hyde Park.

Step inside and you’ll notice, the changes are a little less dramatic. There’s new leather seats on this trim, and new red stitching accents on the dashboard, centre console, and steering wheel. Cubbies and bins aplenty ape the bed practicality, including a huge lidded central box and big door pockets. The second row gets plenty of legroom. Everything feels sturdy and reliable, though that’s not to say it’s uncomfortable or spartan.

The 8-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard now. The FX4 has a high level of standard specification, including dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless Passive Entry and Passive Start, a rear-view parking camera, and front and rear sensors to aid manoeuvrability in tight parking spaces.

Like in the best makeover shows, you’re rooting from the FX4 from the start. Ford’s bakkies always had most of the practicality required to satisfy everyday drivers. What it lacked wasn’t ability but aesthetic, and don’t let anybody tell you bakkies buyers are any less swayed by that than those shopping for a sports car.

What stands out in the 2021 Ford Ranger FX4 is how comprehensively Ford has addressed that while avoiding diluting any of the bakkie’s underlying charm. It’s eminently drivable, leaves you no more tired when you slip from behind the wheel after a long journey than a Ranger might, and its on-road dynamics are a level above what most rivals bring to the table. Potential bakkie buyers who don’t genuinely consider it are doing themselves a disservice, and now they don’t have looks to excuse that oversight.
