I, for one, knows how we’ve become so dependent on GPS that a three-minute drive often means frequent glances at an in-car navigation companion. But taking your eyes off the road can be very dangerous, even if it’s only for a moment. If you’re fortunate enough to have one, a head-up display will let you get to your destination efficiently and safely, and Garmin’s got a new aftermarket solution to keep you cruising on the cheap.

The company’s new HUD (heads-up display) announced in a press release earlier today, projects bright directions onto a transparent film mounted on your windshield, serving up guidance within your regular line of sight. The simple interface displays your current speed and the speed limit, turn arrows, the distance until your next turn and an ETA.

Speaking exclusively to SA Vibe, Mathys Thompson, Garmin Southern Africa Automotive Category Manager said; “Garmin’s HUD interface has been developed utilising an in-house driving simulator that uses cameras to track the driver’s eye movements. The interface design is based on the time and cognitive load required to perform a task with the goal of minimising driver distraction.”

The Garmin HUD is compatible with Bluetooth-equipped smartphones running Garmin StreetPilot and Navigon apps (Android and iOS). It is exclusively available to Makro at a RRP of R1999.

Sure, Adidas may have just revealed a smartwatch that’s geared toward runners, but golfers too need some love from wearable makers. As such, Garmin just announced the successor to its Approach S3 golf watch, the aptly named Approach S4.

This GPS-ready wrist companion offers a lot of the same functionality as its predecessor, although there are a few notable additions in this edition. Namely, the Approach S4 now offers a new, high-resolution display, a battery capable of lasting up to 10 hours on a charge and the ability to access data from more than 30,000 international golf courses (compared to the 27,000 on the S3). Additionally, Garmin’s added a Smart Notification feature that allows users with an iPhone to receive notifications right on their watch, some of which include emails, text messages and more. The Approach S4 will be R4899 when it becomes available later this month at retailers like thePro Shop and Golfers Club.

Garmin has updated its popular Motorcycle series to make it more than just another GPS navigator. zūmo 390 features Bluetooth wireless technology that allows riders to simply connect their zūmo with their mobile phone or a Bluetooth-enabled headset or helmet (sold separately) to make and receive calls on the go. Motorcyclists are then free to talk on their phones without having to remove their gloves or helmet. Riders can also call Points of Interest (POI’s) through the zūmo Bluetooth interface which is perfect for a last-minute change of plans or a quick pit stop for food and fuel. Zūmo 390 can transmit voice guided navigation to motorcyclists’ compatible headsets or helmets (sold separately) and by hearing street names and navigation commands, riders can keep their focus on the road and truly enjoy the ride.

zūmo 390 is the first in the motorcycle series from Garmin to be compatible with the NEW integrated Tyre Pressure Monitor Sensor3 (TPMS) feature. By adding a sensor to each tyre, riders can easily monitor the pressure on the zūmo display. The system works with up to 4 tyres in any configuration, where one TPMS sensor is required for each tyre. With the Service History Log, cruising enthusiasts can record the date, mileage and type of maintenance performed on their motorcycles, whether its tyre mileage, tyre changes, tyre pressure, chain cleanings, oil changes, new spark plugs – whatever you can think of, zūmo will keep a record of it. THe new zumo is said to retail at a RRP of R5799.
