By this time, most smartphone manufacturers have already either rolled out Android 7.0 Nougat to their top devices are have promised that “soon”. That’s true for LG, Sony, and even Samsung. Not to be outdone, Huawei has chimed in to say which ones will be lucky enough to get the update. And while the Huawei P9 is a no-brainer, for reasons yet unknown, it seems that Huawei’s 2015 flagships are, at least for the moment, left out of the party.

Huawei’s latest darling, the Huawei Mate 9, of course has dibs on Nougat, launching with that Android version right out of the box. Huawei’s other 2016 flagship, the Huawei P9, is also getting some love. According to the announcement, that will take place in the first quarter of 2017.

Around the same time as the Huawei P9, the company will also roll out Android 7.0 to the Huawei Mate 8. This is notable as this model was launched in late 2015. Well within the range of the usual two-year support period. That, however, doesn’t seem to apply to other 2015 models, despite not only being somewhat still young but also quite capable. The Huawei P8 and Mate S are noticeably absent from the list.

This would be a bit puzzling considering Huawei hasn’t completely ruled out 2015 models like the Mate 8, though, granted, those two did launch much earlier last year. It isn’t surprising that some users are feeling a bit disgruntled, hoping at least it was some clerical error or just unannounced schedule.

That said, Huawei did also lay out what will happen in the weeks following that Nougat roll out. According to the statement, the Huawei P9 Lite, P9 Plus, Nova, and Nova Plus will be receiving the update around that time. All four are 2016 models.

The numbers are in and IDC’s most recent smartphone shipment and sales report suggests that as Apple’s smartphone unit shipments decline, Huawei rises, and Samsung pulls further away from the pack.

In the second quarter of the year 2016, Samsung is well ahead of the smartphone-selling group with an estimated 77-million units sold over the past three months. Next is Apple with an estimated 40.4-million units, then Huawei with 32.1-million units sold. Huawei was in third place this past quarter as well according to IDC.

IDC suggests that Huawei’s shipments are up 8.4% compared to this same quarter last year, while Samsung’s shipments have gone up 5.5% compared to this same quarter last year. Apple’s change in this time frame is down 15%.

The entire market’s combined smartphone shipments are down 0.3% compared to this same quarter last year. But how is it possible that Huawei could be catching up with Apple – and perhaps someday Samsung?

IDC analysts suggest that Huawei’s strong shipment numbers come from strong domestic sales (in China) and “even stronger” sales in Europe. Huawei is the number-one smartphone seller inside of China at the moment, and China is one massive market. The company is bringing their business to the African markets with extremely strong entries like the mid level GR8 and recently launched P9.

If Huawei can continue to strengthen its position as a high-end smartphone manufacturer, it’s not difficult to imagine the company taking market share from the higher-up, more established brands with the promise of unique smartphones customers have never handled before.

Huawei today announced it sold 2.6 million new P9 and P9 Plus handsets in the first six full weekend of sales since the device launched on June 02. This is roughly 130 percent more than the first sales of the P8 of yesteryear.

“P9 and P9 lite device sales in South Africa have exceeded even our bullish expectations. South African consumers are smart buyers and recognize the combination of features, style, and the Leica co-engineered camera, making the P9 the best smartphone buy available,” said Charlene Munilall, General Manager for Huawei Consumer Business Group South Africa.
