It’s been a couple of years now that Uber’s been delivering ice cream on demand for one day to anyone who calls up its ice cream truck through its apps.

Well, this once-a-year event made it’s come-back-debut in SA this past weekend, in their efforts of now reaching more people across the globe, even in places where Uber’s services aren’t usually available. This past July 18th and 19th – for us – Uber had ice cream trucks going around 144 cities in 38 countries (last year’s event included only 33 cities), serving a variety of treats like gelato on sticks, sundaes and froyo. And in Johannesburg, the ride-sharing company even took the chance to do some charity work as part of Nelson Mandela Day on July 18. Uber gave the children from both the Alex Aids Project in Johannesburg and Uluntu Centre in Cape Town an opportunity to enjoy a special frozen yoghurt experience. Since each region and city will its own frozen goodies at different prices, it’s best to check the Uber blog to know what time you can conjure up the ice cream truck and how much it’s going to eat up from your weekly budget.

Nokia’s biggest announcements in Johannesburg today are focusing on Lumia devices first and foremost, but it’s not leaving the Asha lineup out in the Finnish cold. After boasting that 26 million Ashas have sold so far, the company’s announced that it’s adding three successors to the Asha 501; the 500, the 502 and the 503. All three sport the same primary colored plastic casing as the 501, but with a new “Ice” layer of transparent polycarbonate. They’ll be available in bright red, bright green, yellow, cyan, white and black.

See full specs on the press release after the jump

The all-new Asha range

The showcase also saw the announcement of three new devices in Nokia’s affordable Asha range of smartphones.

“We have expanded the Asha family with a trio of smartphones that offer consumers a choice of handset that suits their budget, each with stunning design, great social apps, and new imaging experiences,” continued Durandt.

Nokia Asha 503 is a 3.5G device, and pushes the boundaries of affordable smartphone innovation with a unique layered design and a scratch-resistant, curved Gorilla Glass screen. With a five megapixel camera and LED flash, the Nokia Asha 503 provides a smarter imaging experience through ‘swipe’ and one-touch social sharing. The Nokia Asha 503 has an estimated recommended retail price (RRP) is R1199.

Joining the Asha 503 is the dual SIM Nokia Asha 502 at an estimated RRP of R1199, and the most affordable device in the range, the Nokia Asha 500 at an estimated RRP of R899. All the new devices are built with the Nokia hallmarks of manufacturing quality and outstanding battery life.

The range features an innovation known as layered design, achieved using the ‘dual shot’ technique which is unique to Nokia. It combines an inner layer of bold, bright colour surrounded by crystal-clear transparency. The combination adds a distinctive look to the phone’s monobody design, as well as durability. The high-end design is a clear differentiator, as are the craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The new Nokia Asha range bring a fully redesigned user interface. Swipe is the main gesture for navigating the phone – whether answering a call, viewing notifications or closing an app. Swipe also activates the built-in camera. Just swipe up from the lock screen to start the camera and touch anywhere on-screen to take a photo. The camera experience is also more social, with the option to post an image to Facebook or Twitter with just one touch.

We thought LG’s star-studded launch held in Jozi last week brought a closure to device announcements and launches in Mzansi, phela once Samsung hosts their annual Note launch (party) we tech-heads have nothing else rather than dry press releases and webcasts to look forward to. Not that I’m complaining, but.. yeah!

Way back in January Alcatel trotted out some new tablets set for debut in Q3, now this is all according to the guys at Engadget. But now we can confirm that some of the handsets that made a appearance earlier in August might just be on their way to our shores, erm, stores rather. The (friendly) guys at Alcatel sent out invites to their One Touch Speak event taking place this Wednesday. While our live tweet sevices have been at halt since Septmeber, we cannot guarantee live tweets to this event either. Scratch that, there will be no live tweets. But rest asssured, we will be have the updates here.

Then again, if you’re worried that you’ll be missing out on all the FOMO be sure to follow the live event hashtag, #OneTouchSpeak on twitter.
