Did you know that there’s more than one way to break a heart? That’s the premise behind Umjolo: Day Ones which explores love, friendship, and betrayal. Premiering exclusively on Netflix from 20 December 2024, this second chapter in the four-part film collection dives into a burning question: Can men and women ever be just friends?

Zanele (Sibusisiwe Jili) and Andile (Kay Sibiya) are the ultimate BFFs — from being each other’s go-to plus-one to providing a comforting shoulder to lean on. Andile, however, is in a healthy marriage with Jessica (Trix Vivier), while Zanele’s love life is a depressing rollercoaster of swipes, ghosting and questionable choices. Jessica reluctantly welcomes her husband’s best friend into their lives, but she can’t ignore the uneasy feeling sparked by their undeniable closeness. As friends and family repeatedly joke about their bond, doubts creep in, leaving her questioning whether there’s more to their relationship than meets the eye.

An encounter between Zanele and Andile shatters their friendship, leaving them grappling with the weight of their secret. Zanele finds herself swept off her feet by a new, seemingly perfect love interest, leaving Andile to step aside, no longer the ‘knight in shining armour’ in her story.

The Umjolo four-part film collection is produced by the award-winning production company Stained Glass, which has been at the forefront of iconic South African television shows for a decade.
