Range Rover is marking two decades since the first full year of production of the Range Rover Sport with the launch of a limited-run TWENTY Edition. This milestone vehicle serves as a technical retrospective, blending the muscular design lineage of the original 2004 concept with the cutting-edge performance hardware of the modern SV flagship.

Performance Hardware and Bespoke Styling

The TWENTY Edition distinguishes itself with a mechanical and aesthetic package that pulls heavily from the Range Rover Sport SV. The cabin is anchored by lightweight, motorsport-inspired Ebony Windsor performance seats, similar to our recent Defender 110, which offer improved ergonomics for high-speed cornering.

All of these are complemented by forged carbon veneers and a black suedecloth headlining to create a darkened, driver-focused atmosphere. On the exterior, the edition pays homage to the original “Range Stormer” concept with an ultra-metallic Sanguinello Orange paint option – a signature colour that has appeared on every generation of the Sport.

The stealthy silhouette is rounded out by 23-inch Gloss Sparkle Silver wheels and bespoke “TWENTY” etching on the treadplates and center console.

Powertrains: V8 Might and Hybrid Efficiency

Reflecting the model’s history of engine innovation, the TWENTY Edition offers two distinct flagship powertrains.

When it comes to performance, the 4.4-litre Twin Turbo V8 mild hybrid produces a formidable 397kW. Conversely, the P550e Plug-in Electric Hybrid represents the brand’s shift toward electrification, pairing a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with a 105kW electric motor and a 38.2kWh battery.

This hybrid setup produces a combined 405kW and offers a pure-electric range of up to 115km, effectively allowing for zero-emission urban commuting without sacrificing the its performance pedigree.

Market Availability

Despite the global excitement surrounding this celebration of Range Rover’s best-selling performance model, the Range Rover Sport TWENTY Edition is not currently confirmed for the South African market.

The beloved seven-seater Discovery SUV lineup has received a comprehensive update, introducing two striking special editions alongside enhanced features across the range. The refreshed family-friendly vehicle now offers more versatility, luxury options, and thoughtfully curated accessory packs designed with adventure-loving families in mind.

Discovery’s 35-year legacy of enabling family explorations is celebrated through the introduction of the Tempest and Gemini editions, each bringing distinctive styling elements and premium features to the trusted SUV platform.

“Discovery is the perfect choice for those who enjoy spontaneous adventures with the whole family,” says Joelle Taylor, Head of Discovery Strategy, Product and Services. “As a mum of two young girls, I know from first-hand experience how well it handles everything family life throws at it. With its vast, versatile, seven-seat interior and exceptional capability, I know we will reach our destination in comfort and with everything we need. The fresh design details, lifestyle-focused option packs and eye-catching Tempest and Gemini editions ensure the range is now more compelling than ever.”

Tempest Edition: Luxury Meets Adventure

The Tempest edition stands as the most luxurious Discovery ever produced. Its name pays homage to the secret development program for the iconic second-generation Discovery launched in 1998.

What sets the Tempest apart is its exclusive Matte Protective Film finish—a first for the Discovery range—available in Charente Grey, Varesine Blue, or Carpathian Grey. The standout Petra Copper Gloss roof creates a striking two-tone effect, complemented by matching Petra Copper accents on the wing vents, lower bumper inserts, and Discovery badging.

Rolling on exclusive 22-inch Diamond Turned Style 5124 wheels with Petra Copper tinted lacquer and Gloss Black detailing, the Tempest makes an undeniable statement on the road. Inside, passengers enjoy Shadow Aluminium trim elements and premium Ebony Windsor leather upholstery, while distinctive spiral Tempest graphics on badges, treadplates, and puddle lamps reinforce its special-edition status.

Gemini Edition: Modern Heritage

The Gemini edition honors Discovery’s engineering excellence, taking its name from the groundbreaking Tdi diesel engine that powered the original Discovery in 1989.

Available in six exterior colors—including the Gemini-exclusive Sedona Red—this edition features a contrasting Narvik Gloss Black roof and matching black body cladding and wing vents. An Atlas Gloss grille surround and unique 21-inch split-seven-spoke Style 7001 wheels with Diamond Turned Silver finish complete the distinctive exterior treatment.

The Gemini’s twinned-hexagon graphic motif appears on various badging elements, referencing both the Discovery’s iconic grille pattern and symbolizing duality and togetherness—perfect for family adventures.

Family comfort takes center stage with practical features like a cooler compartment between the front seats, Click & Go media holders for rear passengers, and three-zone climate control to keep everyone comfortable regardless of seating position.

Powerful Performance

Both special editions come equipped with the formidable Ingenium D350 diesel engine. This 3.0-liter powerplant produces 257kW and 700Nm of torque, incorporating advanced 48V Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology that harvests energy during deceleration to assist with acceleration.

The eight-speed all-wheel drive transmission and impressive 3,500kg towing capacity ensure these special editions maintain the Discovery’s reputation for capability, whether on family road trips or tackling more demanding tasks.

Range-Wide Improvements

The broader Discovery lineup—comprising S, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE, and Metropolitan trims—also receives notable enhancements. New wheel options include a five-spoke 22-inch Style 5124 design with Dark Grey tinted lacquer and Gloss Black detailing, plus a split-five-spoke 21-inch Style 5123 in black for the Dynamic SE.

The well-appointed Dynamic HSE now includes three-zone climate control as standard, ensuring comfort for all seven occupants.

Adventure-Ready Accessory Packs

Discovery’s legendary versatility gets even better with three new curated accessory packs:

The Beach Days pack includes a collapsible luggage organizer, tailgate and window sunshades, a versatile roof rack for water sports equipment, and protective rubber mats throughout.

For extended journeys, the Road Trip pack offers seat organizers, cooling solutions for refreshments, cross bars with a roof box for extra storage, and wind deflectors for fresh air without turbulence.

The Snow Days pack equips winter sports enthusiasts with specialized cross bars for ski/snowboard transport, durable rubber floor protection, mudflaps, and a snow traction system for challenging conditions.

These join the existing For Dogs and Biking Adventures packs in the accessory lineup, ensuring Discovery remains the ultimate companion for family adventures of all kinds.

Pricing for the new Discovery models start at R2 038 800 for the Discovery Gemini and R2 351 200 for the Discovery Tempest.

Land Rover is marking the 35th anniversary of its iconic Discovery SUV with a special edition model and the introduction of a new, more powerful diesel engine. The Discovery has been a mainstay in the seven-seat SUV segment since its debut in 1989, renowned for its versatility and capability.

New D350 Diesel Engine

A highlight of the updated Discovery is the introduction of a new 3.0-liter, six-cylinder diesel engine, dubbed the D350. Delivering 257kW of power and 700Nm of torque, it represents a significant upgrade over the previous D300. The D350 is good to propel the Discovery from 0-100km/h in 6.3 seconds, making it noticeably quicker than its predecessor.

Limited Edition 35th Anniversary Model

To commemorate this milestone, Land Rover has introduced a limited-edition 35th Anniversary model. Based on the Metropolitan Edition, this special version features unique “XXXV” badging and treadplates, along with distinctive exterior and interior enhancements. These include Bright Atlas detailing, 22-inch alloy wheels, black brake calipers, and a range of luxury features such as a head-up display and heated steering wheel.

Enhanced Features Across the Range

Beyond the special edition, the entire Discovery range benefits from upgrades. All models now come standard with powered adjustable seats with memory function and an electrically adjustable steering column.

Unwavering Capability

The Discovery’s reputation for off-road prowess remains intact, with features like Terrain Response 2, All Terrain Progress Control, and a maximum wading depth of 900mm. Its towing capacity of 3,500kg and Advanced Tow Assist system further solidify its position as a capable and versatile family SUV.

The 2024 Discovery is available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, catering to diverse customer preferences. With its blend of luxury, practicality, and off-road ability, the Discovery continues to be a strong contender in the premium SUV segment.

The Discovery 35th Anniversary Edition is priced from R1,808,400 and is now available for order. Land Rover South Africa is yet to confirm when models will touch down in Mzansi.

Luxury automaker Land Rover has unveiled a new collection for the Range Rover Sport SV that breaks away from tradition. The Celestial Collection isn’t a lineup focused solely on performance or horsepower. Instead, it offers a unique homage to ancient mythology and celestial bodies.

This collection features five distinct curations, each named after a mythological figure or celestial object: Gaea, Theia, Io, Vega, and Sol. Each Range Rover Sport SV in the Celestial Collection boasts a bespoke exterior colour and unique design elements that reflect its namesake.

“The cosmos is a universal theme that transcends borders,” said Phoebe Lindsay, Materiality Manager at Range Rover. “It’s fitting for the first collection for the Range Rover Sport SV, pushing the boundaries of design while staying true to Range Rover’s British heritage.”

The focus isn’t just on visual appeal. The Celestial Collection extends the theme throughout the interior, with inscriptions and finishes adorning the center console, treadplates, and other elements. This approach aims to create a personal connection between driver and car.

“Luxury car buyers today seek more than just a vehicle,” explains Geraldine Ingham, Managing Director of Range Rover. “We want to create cars that inspire a personal connection. The Celestial Collection is an ethereal and unique range, meticulously crafted for those who value deeper meaning and storytelling in their car.”

A Look Inside the Celestial Collection

Gaea: Inspired by the Greek goddess of Earth, Gaea features a Green Terre Matte exterior and an earthy-toned interior.

Theia: Named after the Titaness of sight, Theia sports a warm Ilmenite Grey exterior and an Ebony and Ecru Windsor leather interior.

Io: Taking cues from the most volcanically active body in our solar system, Io boasts a fiery orange Cyllene Gloss exterior with two interior options: a dramatic Ebony and Rosewood combination or a more traditional Ebony and Lunar Windsor leather.

Vega: Inspired by the bright blue star Vega, this curation features a Verrier Blue exterior and two interior choices: light Ebony and Perlino leather or a darker Raven Blue and Ebony leather-free option.

Sol: Sol, the Roman Sun god, is embodied in a striking Aurora Yellow gloss exterior.

Oly five units of each curation will be made available in South Africa.

Land Rover has unveiled a new addition to the Defender lineup, the OCTA, which the company positions as the most powerful and most capable Defender ever created. Here’s a breakdown of the key features that set this new off-road conqueror […]

Land Rover has unveiled a new addition to the Defender lineup, the OCTA, which the company positions as the most powerful and most capable Defender ever created. Here’s a breakdown of the key features that set this new off-road conqueror apart – and that we’re most excited for.

Unbeatable Performance: The heart of the OCTA is a monstrous 4.4-liter twin-turbo mild-hybrid V8 engine, churning out a staggering 467kW and 750Nm of torque. This translates to a blistering 0-100 km/h in just 4 seconds, making it the fastest Defender ever made.

Uncompromising Capability: Land Rover hasn’t forgotten its roots. The OCTA goes beyond what any Defender has achieved before with its innovative 6D Dynamics suspension and revised hardware, offering superior ground clearance, stability, and maximum wheel articulation for conquering any terrain.

Extreme Durability: The OCTA has undergone a rigorous testing regime to ensure it can handle the harshest environments. From high-speed off-roading to demanding on-road durability, the OCTA is built to last.

First-Ever OCTA Mode: Land Rover has introduced a dedicated off-road driving mode for the first time with the OCTA. This mode prioritizes performance and control, giving drivers ultimate confidence when exploring uncharted territories.

Confident Exterior Design: The OCTA boasts a bold and imposing presence with 33-inch diameter tires, the largest ever on a production Defender. Extended wheel arches, a redesigned front bumper with increased airflow, and a tough underbody protection system solidify its off-road prowess.

Exclusive Colour Palette: The OCTA comes in a range of premium colours, including two all-new metallic finishes: Petra Copper and Faroe Green. All models sport a contrasting gloss black roof and tailgate for a touch of sophistication.

Luxurious and Engaging Interior: The OCTA’s cabin offers a curated selection of materials, with two highly durable and lightweight Ultrafabrics PU options available. The luxurious Burnt Sienna semi-aniline leather interior with Kvadrat textile trim adds another layer of refinement.

Performance Seats: The OCTA boasts all-new Performance Seats with enhanced bolstering and integrated headrests, providing exceptional comfort and support during off-road adventures.

Immersive Body and Soul Seat Audio: For the first time in a Defender, Land Rover introduces the innovative Body and Soul Seat audio system. This system allows occupants to not just hear, but also feel the music, creating a truly immersive auditory experience.

South African Pricing and Debut: The new Defender OCTA is expected to hit South African shores soon with a starting price of around R3,499,100. Gear up to see this champion off-roader make its global debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

I had the privilege of participating in the Land Rover Defender Drive Experience in Cape Town, where I had the chance to explore their entire lineup of Defender vehicles. Our base for this adventure was the stunning Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.

Defining the personality of a car is as challenging as it is to fake one, but I assure you, there’s something truly special about the Land Rover Defender that sets it apart in the SUV category.

I must admit, I’m captivated by the new Defender’s aesthetics. It strikes a perfect balance between rugged off-road vehicles like the Wrangler and Bronco and the luxurious Range Rover. Whether in its two-door 90 form or the four-door 110 configuration, the Defender exudes charm. Even the stretched Defender 130, with its generous three rows of seats, manages to maintain its appeal despite its unique rear design. My affection for the Land Rover brand and its products is what led me here.

So, how did I find myself surrounded by picturesque landscapes, adorable wildlife, and eight Defenders of various descriptions? My journey began in Cape Town, early in the morning, where I joined the final leg of the 2023 Defender Drive experience. This two-day event kicked off in Sir Lowry’s Pass and took us on an almost-uninterrupted caravan journey through the southern parts of the Overberg region, featuring cars from the British-turned-Tata Motors brand.

The Defender Drive Experience, often shortened to #DefenderDrive, is not a one-time event. It has been running for about two months now, offering Defender owners and potential customers the opportunity to experience these models in a unique setting. It taps into the deep enthusiasm that Defender, Range Rover, and Discovery owners have for their vehicles.

If there was ever any doubt that Defender drivers are a close-knit community, witnessing their interactions on the road dispels it instantly. A shared wave and a flash of headlights are the minimum gestures exchanged, and conversations are likely when they meet on their way to their cars. When gathered in significant numbers, it turns into a convention of non-conformists, each an individual enthusiast driving the Defender legacy forward.

Despite the grand scale of the Defender Drive, the route’s organization is kept flexible, reflecting the individualistic nature of its participants. I received the keys to a diesel-powered Defender 130 and a simple Google Maps link with directions. Our destination was Hermanus, and the journey was all about exploration.

This minimalist approach allows us to discover some of the region’s hidden gems. Shaun, one of the trusted Defender Experts accompanying us, skillfully guides us through winding roads and avoids mundane highways. Our journey takes us through remote places like Babilonstoring Nature Reserve, where we enjoyed a delightful lunch at Creation Wines, surrounded by bespoke sculptures worth over R1 million. I may have indulged a bit too much in their Confit Duck, Cauliflower, and Smoked Paprika Chickpea Puree dish.

One remarkable aspect of this trip is the rarity of filling stations along the way. Towards the end of the day, I wondered if we would need to refuel soon, but the Defenders proved to be impressively efficient.

After covering approximately 300 kilometers of scenic terrain, we finally reached our destination at the Chorus Restaurant, where our adventure had begun two days earlier. It was evident that the conclusion of this journey was just the beginning of the next Defender Drive Experience. Fellow journalists were buzzing around the Defender fleet, taking last-minute selfies and photos for their keepsakes. New friendships were formed, and old ones were rekindled. The room buzzed with energy, underscoring Jaguar Land Rover’s remarkable achievement in turning metal and glass into something more—a family.

The set is designed for fans aged 18 and over, and is sure to provide a challenging and rewarding building experience. The attention to detail in the design and construction of the model is impressive, and will appeal to both fans of Lego and fans of the Land Rover Defender.

Many have praised the attention to detail and the level of engineering that has gone into the design of the set. Others have commented on the nostalgic appeal of the Land Rover Defender, which has been a staple of British motoring for over 70 years.

The Classic Defender 90 set is a fantastic addition to the Lego Icons range, and is sure to delight both Lego fans and Land Rover enthusiasts.

Just a mere 13 months and some 40 000 km later, Kingsley Holgate’s humanitarian expedition has made its way back to Mzansi. The expedition started at Cape Aghulhas, the most southern point on the Africa continent and made its way to the most northern point of Europe, and then on to the mystical Isle of Anglesey in Wales. Why would someone venture on something of this kind, you may ask, “All of our expeditions have the principle of ‘saving and improving lives through adventure”, said Holgate.

Without any further ado, let’s have a look at the incredible achievement from this year’s Transcontinental Expedition in numbers.

The core Holgate team used two expedition-kitted P400 Defenders for the entire journey, with other team members joining the expedition along the way in their own Defenders.

The expedition covered close to 40,000km through 30 countries in Africa and Europe.

This expedition was the 40th for renowned explorer Kingsley Holgate.

The Kingsley Holgate Foundation became the first exploration team in 30 years to cross the African continent from south to north through both Sudans.

The team conducted humanitarian work that assisted around 300,000 people along the expedition’s route through Africa with nutritional support, malaria prevention, water purification and Rite to Sight.

Before crossing into Mozambique, the expedition reached the milestone of providing two million meals of nutritional support and early childhood development teaching materials to children at 130 rural creches, upgrading 20 of the most dilapidated, and completed projects to supply thousands of community residents with clean drinking water in water-scarce areas of northern KwaZulu-Natal.

In Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and South Sudan, the expedition worked with long-term partners Goodbye Malaria and in-country hospitals, churches, schools and community clinics on malaria prevention, providing educational material and distributing tens of thousands of Vestergaard high-quality, insecticide-treated malaria nets to pregnant women and mothers with young children who are the most vulnerable.

Thousands of eye-tests and reading glasses were distributed to mostly elderly, poor-sighted people in remote communities.

Before leaving South Africa, the expedition team partnered with conservation groups in the Eastern Cape to plant 6,000 indigenous Albany Thicket trees to offset the expedition’s carbon footprint.

Along the way, they also helped launch a One Million Tree-planting programme adjacent to Tanzania’s Serengeti.

In addition, a garden of spekboom was planted at Jaguar Land Rover Experience in Lonehill to offset the emissions produced by customer test drives at the centre. So far, 850 spekboom plants have been planted at the centre, and the aim was to plant another 2,500 spekboom plants by the end of 2022.

The all-new Land Rover Defender is getting a few updates for the 2021 model year. The biggest news is the much-awaited arrival of the Defender 90 short-wheelbase model.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender is also receiving a new mid-tier X-Dynamic trim level. It slots between the base and top-of-the-line Defender X model, and it comes with a bevy of new kit including gloss black rocker panels and wheel arches, new ‘Silicon Satin’ skid pans, and durable Robustec synthetic seat accents.

The Land Rover Discovery Landmark Edition is more than just the latest family-friendly luxury SUV from the British brand. This special edition pays homage to three decades of adventure with the ultimate go-anywhere SUV.

Not only that, it also goes above and beyond when it comes to tackling off-road terrain that would have most other sport-utility vehicles in its class breaking out the maps to try to find a paved road around.

That the Discovery Landmark Edition is so effective on road and off, without compromising daily driving comfort, is an impressive accomplishment, and also a big part of what differentiates Land Rover from its rivals Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. While the Discovery’s capabilities are well proved off road, we kept the Landmark on road for our test period, driving through famous landmarks in the Sandton area and surrounds.

Let’s take a look at our favourite things you need to know about keeping the Land Rover Discovery Landmark on-road.

First Impressions Count

When creating the Discovery Landmark Edition, engineers at Land Rover took the well-appointed SE as a starting point, then added the Dynamic Pack, which includes a more purposeful front bumper design and Narvik Black mesh grille and fender vents. Those with a discerning eye will appreciate the Narvik Black nameplate scripting on the bonnet and tailgate that is also joined by unique Landmark badging on the tailgate.

The exterior is also marked out by a fixed panoramic roof, front fog lights and signature tail lights, while privacy glass and 20-inch Gloss Black wheels complete the modern and contemporary look perfect for city cruising.

Step Inside

Jump inside the Discovery Landmark and the first thing you notice is the ultra plus interior, which is available with a choice of three premium Windsor leather colourways with contrast stitching. A Satin Brushed Aluminium centre console and titanium mesh finishers also set it apart from the rest of the Discovery line, with the 380W Meridian Sound System.

For the techies at heart, there’s Android Auto and Apple Carplay as standard.

The Discovery Landmark Edition is available exclusively with a 190kW/600Nm 3.0-litre TD6 engine paired with 8-speed automatic transmission.

The first thing I did with the 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 when it graced our test driveway was get over my guilt that I didn’t have some grand, off-roading adventure planned. Well, to be fair that was the second thing: first was pausing to appreciate just how handsome the SUV this storied nameplate is attached to is, as it makes its long-awaited return to South African shores – dare we even call it home for this legend.

As with other rebooted icons, however, figuring out how to drag the Defender into the 21st Century proved a challenge, according to Land Rover. Those same alluring sales figures for SUVs come with a far broader audience to satisfy. It’s one which quite frankly doesn’t need the off-roading talents that were once essential to SUV buyers, and moreover won’t compromise on driving dynamics because of those abilities.

The result is, like most of the best reinventions, controversial and memorable.

The 2020 Defender has softened in its edges but has no less presence for it. Distinctive cues like the circular headlamps, Alpine windows in the roof, and the side-opening tailgate with its spare wheel are a nod to the past, sitting alongside more sculpted arches, crisp LED taillights, and plenty of curb presence. It’s quite a sight to behold and fall in love with.

I think it looks tremendous, and while Land Rover’s palette of toned-down greens, browns, grey, and silvers aren’t exactly bold, they let the distinctive two-tone finish speak for itself. For the moment the five-door Defender 110 is the only model in Mzansi, but this year will bring the Defender 90 with two doors and an even more debonair look. The Pangea Green of my review car turned heads, repeatedly, drawing attention from bakkie and SUV owners alike.

My spec Defender S – optioned out to a hefty R196 900 – came with the D240 as standard, which is an Ingenium 2.0 litre 4-cylinder good for 177kW of power and it’s well suited to the SUV’s manners. It doesn’t feel exactly over-powered on the road, but it’s responsive and has plenty of low-end torque that arrives in a pleasing and reliable surge.

All-wheel drive is, unsurprisingly, standard, and Land Rover adds locking differentials as well. Underneath, the big change – and among the most controversial – is a switch from body-on-frame to a unibody platform. Purists may scoff and wave their arms in fury, but it just plain makes more sense for an SUV expected to handle asphalt as well as it does rougher terrain.

Gone, too, are the solid axles, replaced with fully independent suspension. That uses air suspension with adjustable ride height, too. It’ll lift to up to 11.5-inches of ground clearance, and wade through up to 900mm of water.

Were I one of those purists, here’s where I’d talk about how I led the Defender on an uncompromising overlanding adventure packed with perilous cliffs and inclines fit only for mountain goats. Let’s face it, though, the majority of Defender buyers will be sticking to regular roads most of the time, and likely only setting the SUV’s Terrain Response drive mode to its sand or rock crawl settings by accident. My trim also got Terrain Response 2 with an intelligent Auto mode, which picks the transmission, suspension, and traction settings for you.

I may not have challenged myself with the Mzansi equivalent of Mount Kilimanjaro, but the Defender did get to show its merit on some gravel and farm roads in the Free State, conquer unpaved and deeply rutted roads with aplomb, and tackle the arduous twists and turns of the grocery store parking lot. The latter demonstrated the worth of the standard 3D Surround Camera feature, which goes one step better than most bird’s eye view systems by magically showing you what’s actually underneath the SUV.

Blind spot assistance, cruse control, lane-keeping assistance, rear traffic monitor, traffic sign recognition, and the clear exit monitor come standard, too. For your picking you can add a camera-based rear view mirror and a head-up display too, among other things.

There’s a sense of burly sophistication when you settle in at the wheel, and happily the Defender lives up to that first-impression. You can cruise along comfortably and fool yourself into thinking you’re in a Range Rover, but it’s equally confident at making you feel invincible in bad weather or when the state of the road surface really ought to be shaking out your teeth. While it has plenty of presence, too, it’s actually shorter than a Ford Ranger, and the slab-sided aesthetic means it’s not too tricky to figure where the edges are in tighter parking spots around Sandton.

As for the inside, that blend of practical and plush continues. Land Rover’s fully digital instrumentation is standard. A 10-inch touchscreen for the Pivi Pro infotainment system is standard, along with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, and wireless phone charging. The Defender X-Dynamic adds a Meridian sound system, too, along with tablet mounts and USB charging ports for the rear passengers.

Were I actually planning on off-road pursuits, I’d probably stick with the base SUV’s fabric trim too; X-Dynamic trim adds leather, and the Defender X gets even nicer hide with an extended package. Regardless of trim, there are plenty of cubbies, storage nooks, and rubber-lined trays ideal for holding phones, headphones, stray GoPro cameras, and more.

Exposed rivet heads and chunky switchgear both look and feel the part, while there’s a decent amount of headroom and legroom in both the first and second rows. The optional third row, however, is best left for the smallest of kids, or better still as cargo space.

In total, though, it’s tough not to be swayed by the new Defender’s charms. It feels more special than other SUVs: built for the wild, yes, but hose off the mud and I reckon it could go toe to toe with a Range Rover when it comes to living fancy. The badge and standard equipment do carry a price premium, but I think the overall presence and the general cohesiveness of its on- and off-road abilities make that feel a reasonable price to pay. After almost 20 years of absence it’s not quite the Defender we expected: it’s better than that.

The new 2020 Discovery Sport is not short on tech. The 360-degree surround camera system more than proved its worth throughout the rough and tumble Sabie outback section, while ClearSight GroundView system takes full advantage of the 12.3-inch high-definition full colour screen for an omnipotent look of the path ahead. As a smaller driver, at 5’4″, the camera tech’s ability to essentially render the bonnet invisible was a welcome X-ray-like vision through the body of the SUV.

It’s not the only clever camera system, either. The ClearSight Rear View mirror took some getting used to, beaming video from the rear of the car to the switchable rear-view mirror at the top of the windshield. At first it seems like you’re looking at an HDR impressionist painting of the scene behind your vehicle, but in the end we preferred it to the traditional rear view mirror experience.

Elsewhere, the car’s interfaces have been pared-down and streamlined, leaving them intuitive to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are present, along with wireless charging, USB ports for all three rows, 4G WiFi Hotspot, and AI smart settings for custom preferences. Your phone can also double as an InControl Remote, through the app, to monitor most aspects of the car from afar.

Although we didn’t get to play with it, Land Rover’s Activity Key gets an honourable mention, a secure RFID fob for around your wrist that’s waterproof up to 50 meters. A deactivated traditional key can remain inside the locked car while you go and enjoy a run or hike; we reckon it will definitely be a crowd pleaser among the active and athletic types. When you return, all you have to do is bring the wristband close to a small circular insignia on the back windshield and, voila, the doors unlock.
