• Showmax Originals and select titles are moving to DStv Stream, where they will live in a dedicated Showmax section within the app.

The success of Showmax Originals has been built through partnerships with producers, writers and creative talent across Africa. Series such as Spinners, a co‑production between MultiChoice and CANAL+, which aired across Africa and in France, demonstrate how locally developed African stories are increasingly reaching global audiences. 

For South African customers, DStv Stream remains the platform where this content is available locally, alongside a much broader library of African and international content, live channels and sport.

How to get Showmax on DStv

You (customers) can download the DStv Stream app or visit the DStv website, log in or sign up, and navigate to the Showmax section. Showmax Originals on DStv Stream are available on DStv Compact and DStv Premium packages. This includes satellite customers, who get access to DStv Stream as part of their package, as well as standalone DStv Stream customers. DStv Compact Stream is available from R299. 

Beyond its content library, DStv Stream includes a range of useful streaming features such as live and on‑demand viewing, pause and rewind, Watch From Start, offline downloads, recording, and the ability to adjust video quality to manage data usage.

Adding onto this great news is MultiChoice who today have announced that Friends: The Reunion will premiere on M-Net exclusive to DStv on Sunday, 30 May at 20:00 and will be available on streaming service Showmax from Monday, 31 May 2021.

Not that you needed reminding but Friends stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer. Together they are all set to return to the iconic comedy’s original soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank for a real-life unscripted celebration of the beloved show. 

Friends: The Reunion will feature a variety of special guest appearances, including David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai.

Ben Winston directed the special and executive produced along with Friends executive producers Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane. The special hails from Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, Fulwell 73 Productions and Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions. Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc, Perry, and Schwimmer executive produced the special. Emma Conway, James Longman and Stacey Thomas-Muir co-executive produced.

MJ Basset (Power, Strike Back, Ash vs Evil Dead) directs the action-adventure film, which also stars Philip Winchester (Strike Back, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), BAFTA Rising Star winner Adam Deacon (Casualty), and South African stars Jessica Sutton (Motherland: Fort Salem, The Kissing Booth), Sisanda Henna (Trackers, Griekwastad), Brandon Auret (District 9, Elysium, Still Breathing), Kenneth Fok (Warrior) and Greg Kriek (Black Mirror), one of South Africa’s busiest actors, with over 50 international screen credits to his name. 

While Megan has turned down numerous military films since Transformers, she accepted Rogue partly because of the attraction of coming to Africa. “I felt like my life was going to change going to Africa,” Fox told New York Daily News. “And I didn’t know why; I just knew that I had to do this project for some reason.” 

The decision paid off. “Megan Fox in Rogue redefines her reputation and career,” says Refinery29, who add that the film “straddles the two phases of Megan Fox’s life: her early days as an action star too often used as a prop for the male gaze, and her future as a woman taking charge of her own destiny…”

As Basset told Refinery29, “[I wanted] to make Megan credible, rather than this sex object that’s she so frequently used for by male filmmakers… I said, ‘There’s no romance in here; you’re not wearing skimpy T-shirts or short-shorts. You’re carrying full battle rattle, and I’m going to expect you to get dirty and bruised.’She was quite excited by that, to be honest.”

While ultimately an escapist action movie, Rogue also spotlights the abuse of lions in Africa. “This film is fiction,” says Basset, who wrote the movie as a passion project with her daughter, Isabel, who has a cameo in the film. “But the facts are that in 2019 there were over 12 000 lions in ‘farms’ in South Africa. Though this is legal, most are being kept in appalling conditions before being killed for their skins, bones and other body parts to supply traditional medicine markets. Cubs are bred and used for petting zoos until too old to handle before being shipped for slaughter or used in ‘canned’ hunting. It is a disgrace and should be stopped.” 

As The Guardian wrote about Rogue, “If hit Netflix documentary Tiger King had you championing the big cat cause, here’s the animal rights-respecting action-thriller you should watch next…” They called it “an energetic action thriller” where “the action rattles along”.

The award-winning South African crew includes South African Film and Television Award winners Brendan Barnes as director of photography; Waldemar Coetsee as production designer; and Theola Booyens as hair and makeup designer. 

The SA-UK film is a co-production between MultiChoice, Capstone and Mannequin, with Lionsgate Home Entertainment handling distribution in North America. No release date as been communicated yet but be rest assured that we will confirm as soon as it is.

Each episode will be 30 minutes long. MultiChoice and M-Net have announced that they are planning to make the DStv Premium channel, M-Net 101 available to its DStv Compact Plus, Compact, Family and Access from 21 – 24 September(from 7pm-7.30pm only). 

Legacy follows the story of the super-wealthy Price family, patriarch Sebastian Price is approaching retirement and one of his  family members will soon have to take over the reins. His ruthless first-born daughter has her eye on the position of CEO and she will do about anything ensure she gets it. Who will it be? And at what price? The telenovela ensemble includes Deon Lotz , Mary-anne Barlow, Kgomotso Christopher, Michelle Botes, Anton David Jephta, Reandi Grey, Jay Anstey, Neil McCarthy, Dawid Minnaar, Sean-Marco Vorster, Trix Vivier, Siyabonga Thwala, Leeanda Reddy, and Don Mlangeni Nawa.  

The telenovela will also be available on DStv Catch up via Explora as well as DStv Now.  

From Monday 21 September (Monday – Thursday), M-Net’s schedule will move 30 minutes later than usual to accommodate the start of Legacy. This also means, Thursday local favourites The Single Wives South Africa and Inconceivable will be broadcast at 19:30 and 20:30. Kindly check your EPG for all updates.

According to a statement released by the service itself earlier today, the company wants to challenge broadcast TV by offering coverage of live sporting events from SuperSport, including soccer, golf, tennis, and athletics

In June 2019, Showmax began testing sport live-streaming, and the new Showmax Pro service is based on the results of this. The service is currently only available in Kenya and Nigeria.

Another key development for the service and its African markets has been adapting the service for the data connectivity constraints on the continent and focusing on the most-used viewing devices. In November last year, Showmax launched a mobile-only service for smartphones and tablets featuring all of the Showmax content but at half the cost of the standard Showmax service and consuming less data.

This service has also proven popular, so in addition to the standard version of Showmax Pro there will also be a mobile-only version at half the price.

There is no specific date for the South African launch of Showmax Pro, and the company said that sport content and pricing may vary by country.

WarnerMedia’s TOONAMI has been in existence across Africa for the past three years and targets all superhero fans, especially kids between the ages of eight and 12, offering non-stop, uninterrupted, 24-hour programming, jam-packed with top-rated series’ such as DC Comics’ Batman, Superman, The Green Lantern, Young Justice and The Justice League as well as popular animated series Teen Titans among others.

The number of hours streamed in a single day on the service now regularly tops one million, which is more than 100 years’ worth of viewing for a single person.

The figures represent a new trend at Dstv — the company’s digital arm (Connected Video division of MultiChoice) used to keep its viewer numbers a secret, but has started dropping some details here and there when something it launches manages to draw in a massive number of viewers.

Dstv Now also bragged about the data carried by content delivery network partners during the Final peaked at more than 500 Gbps (more than 4 000 GB of data per minute), another record for DStv Now in Africa.

Telkom will bundle the new DStv Explora decoder with its SmartHome Premium package for R899 on a 24 month contract. The offer will be available from 22 November 2014 to new and existing Telkom customers.

Customers will need to link their DStv Explora to their existing internet router, either by Ethernet cable or using the DStv WiFi Connector to enable these new services.

Unfortunately for us (and you) DStv mobile was kind enough to assume just a standard, one line spec description would do. The Walka sports a 16×9 aspect ratio and a battery life of 3. 5 hours. Enough for one soccer game, it’s pre- and -post game analysis and just about enough time for one music video play on Trace TV.

Should you wish to get your hands on this (very) limited Walka, it’ll set you back R699, but do be warned as your city might not have DVB-H coverage.
