We’ve been hearing about the promise of the connected home, or the “Internet of Things,” for years. And this past week, one thing became clear: The connected home of the future is achievable today.

MWEB’s fibre home, for example, was a mock-up showing how tech could change the way we live. Unlike trade shows and expos of past years, however, the vast majority of “things” on show were off-the-shelf products you could buy and install in your luxe house or apartment right now.

The fibre home is exactly that, a showcase of MWEB’s FTTH capabilities. which it refers to as ‘world class internet’. The company urges the public that feel that they need further proof that we’re already living the connected dream to visit the installation.

The breakout of the Fibre Home is something entirely different. For instance, the unlaunched 65” 4K OLED TV, the 700W 7.1CH Wi-Fi Sound Bar and Smart Wireless Network speakers, all from LG, Samsung’s VR headsets, wearables, toys and smart sensors. It’s not going to be the only name in FTTH.

So, while you can have your fridge talk to your TV and your washer discuss politics with your toaster, they’ll all need to be wired up to the grid, somehow.

Broadband providers typically try to attract new customers by offering attractively low prices for an introductory period. Eventually, the monthly cost of these contracts shoot up to compensate for the discounted rate you’ve been paying up until then, but this is where Mweb’s latest ADSL and FTTH deal is a little bit different.

As of today, Mweb’s basic capped ADSL packages have to dropped by as much as R150; and, better yet, their FTTH products have decreased as well with a number of free extras such as Dstv Explora’s, installation or routers. We know what you’re thinking: hang on a second, where’s the catch?

The price decreases on high-end, capped ADSL products are:
• 300G dropped to R999, saving: R150
• 150GB dropped to R549, saving: R50
• 100GB dropped to R399, saving: R50
• 75GB dropped to R299, saving: R50
• 50GB dropped to R199, saving: R40

Well, there isn’t one – not one that’s likely to send you running, anyway. Firstly, Mweb hasn’t volunteered an end date for the promotion meaning that existing customers will automatically benefit from the new price reductions and have received communication to this effect. Also, if you want to take Mweb up on the FTTH offer, you’ll have to take out a Telkom landline that is in a FTTH covered area; broadband and landlines usually come as pair, though, so that’s not exactly unusual.

DLSpeed(Mbps)Cap(GB)Price(was)Price(Now)Promotional offer

Mweb is adding more data to its capped data plans without raising monthly fees in the process. Instead, they’re slashing them. If you’re currently paying R145 a month for 10GB, your allotment will jump to 20 gigs with another 20GB for night time browsin, while those on the R239, 30GB plan will now get 50GB per month.

More data is only part of the value proposition for capped customers, though; the plan also offers the ability to sign-in into Mweb’s WiFi hotspots.
Additionally, the ISP is slashing line rental prices b up to R84 for their 10Mbps lines — but note that these retail from about R539 (10Mbps). While these updates are good news for current capped subscribers, they’re quite as competitive as Telkom’s Do budle rates, which start at R399 a month with unlimited (read: 10GB) data, unlimited night time surf (12am-6am) and up to 4Mbps line rental included. That said, R145 a month for <del datetime="2014-08-12T10:24:28+00:00">10GB</del> 20GB and hotspot functionality is a nice step up on Mweb’s part.

Just over a ear ago, the government said it was working on proposals to make outdoor public WiFi available in all Metro cities, and, well, that has not come to pass. Today, Mweb has announced their efforts of activating their first WiFi high street. To celebrate this the lucky mile, situated in Durban’s Florida Road was treated to a twitter-powered WiFi light art installation demonstration that practically highlighted the possibilities that high-speed WiFi brings. But is it worth the vibe? Well, this outfit has freed up to 10Mbps in some area zones (depending on the number of devices connected) but, according to Mweb, its not about the speed; but about the rich media experience.

If you’re thinking your favourite shop’s network couldn’t get any faster and richer, think again. MWEB WiFi Zones ensure that ‘connected’ consumers have instant; uninterrupted access to their online world to augment their social experiences, while giving business owners the opportunity to enhance their core offering to their customers.

It may not be as convenient as, say, Vodacom’s attempt to abolish data roaming frustrations, but in a statement released yesterday, Mweb has partnered with yet another WiFi hotspot provider to make sharing those vacation pictures with cubicle-bound chums that much easier. International hotspot outfit Fon and Mweb have inked a deal that opens their respective WiFi networks up to each other’s customers, though jetsetters will need a device compatible with Mweb’s WiFi International iOS and Android apps, or their own Fon enabled router. That’s not the only catch, either. Like with Mweb’s other hotspot arrangements, patrons of the network provider will already need active Mweb ADSL login details to take advantage of the free WiFi.

Who said there’s no such thing as free international WiFi sharing?
