We always have time for clever and cool concepts here and this one, titled Dunk the Halls, presented by Disney, ESPN and the NBA is one of those. It is the first real-time animated NBA game using Sony’s Beyond Sports technology and it is set to go live on Christmas Day 2024, when the New York Knicks – led by Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns – host the San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul. Dunk the Halls airing on ESPN2 (DStv 219, Starsat 249) on 25 December at 19:00 (CAT).

Officially launched in May 2011, the Royal Bafokeng Jr. NBA Finals is a massive program that has grown to include 116 teams from 44 schools across all five regions of the Royal Bafokeng Nation and looks to shine a light on all things basketball development in Mzansi. The program has reached more than 100,000 people over the past 13 years through basketball development and youth engagement initiatives featuring a youth basketball league for boys and girls in primary and secondary schools, elite development camps, coaching clinics and basketball court refurbishments.

It also comprises of NBA-trained national and international level staff (nine players and two coaches who have represented South Africa at international events) who are tasked with overseeing and directing the various programs that are divided into a coach’s certification and development program; an after-school program; a scholastic 5-on-5 Jr. NBA League and tournament for boys and girls throughout 18 schools; and the building of infrastructure to support the program.

As part of the broader NBA and Royal Bafokeng Sports (RBS) partnership, 18 new and refurbished basketball courts were built across the five Royal Bafokeng regions. Initially for middle school and high school students, the program added primary school students in 2014.

In March 2016, Hollywood actor Kevin Hart visited the program and attended basketball clinics at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.

The Larry O’Brien Trophy, presented by NBA Legends Cedric Ceballos and Sam Perkins, featured at the fourth edition of the Royal Bafokeng Jr. NBA Finals which took place in October 2014. This year’s installment is taking place on 30 September 2023 and we look forward to forming part of it as well as documenting the various exciting elements.

With the end of the current console generation fast approaching, there are plenty of people wondering how publishers and developers will handle cross-generation games. On Xbox Series X, we’ll see Smart Delivery, a feature that lets customers buy a game on either Xbox One or Xbox Series X and own it on the other platform, but Microsoft isn’t forcing publishers to participate in that program.

One publisher who clearly won’t be participating in Smart Delivery is 2K Games with NBA 2K21.

Now take this, imagine a gloomy summer day with your mates at the courts shooting hoops than you experience a sudden epiphany when you see one of your boys pull a signature Anthony Davis move. Initially, NBA 2K20 comes to mind, however, you start wondering to yourself, who exactly will be featured on the cover of the upcoming 2K21.

When one thinks of gaming, particularly the dunking and high flying one, only one thing comes to mind. Get your mind out the gutter. I’m sure you smiling right now because basketball is on top of your mind…Right? Of course, there have been other imitations and almost perfect like console games, however, truth be told, one name and one name only which has been dominating for close to two decades is on top of your mind. I’m sure you sitting there rather puzzled and asking yourself which other game could be better than the current NBA 2K20 which by the way is one of the games made available at no additional cost to for PlayStation Plus members.

Throughout the years the series features some of the greatest athletes representing different eras of the basketball game. Today one could easily agree that Damian Lillard is one of the MVP’s dominating the court, however, let’s not forget the Thanos of the National College league himself, Zion Williamson who is a standard-bearer for the next generation of NBA superstars.

The next instalment of the franchise promises to pack quite a few aces up its sleeves. This year there will be a few versions of the game.

On the cover of the current-generation version which will be the initial launch edition of NBA 2K21 is five-time NBA All-Star and Portland Trail Blazers’ standout Damian Lillard. The next-generation version is set to feature, New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson who lands the cover for the PlayStation®5 and Xbox Series X version. For gurus of the franchise, the top-notch version known as the Legend edition will be replaced by what will be dubbed as the Mamba edition which will also be celebrating the life of legendary Kobe Bryant who made a major global impact both on and off the court. It also boasts very unique and never before used covers on both the current and a new next-generation cover.

What we particularly like and have come to love about the NBA franchise is their consistency and ability to improve from their previous versions. The realistic graphics are amongst the best when it comes to sports gaming, they give off a real world like and lively feel to the game.

NBA 2K21 will be available worldwide on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC from the 4th September 2020. NBA 2K21 will also be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X as a launch title.

Be sure to tune in when the game launches for a much more detailed first impression of NBA 2K21. Everything related to game-play, features and game soundtracks will also be revealed then.

One can expect to get their hands on NBA 2K21 for R 1 149.95 on current-generation platforms; the pricing for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X version of NBA 2K21 will be available at a later date. NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition will be available for R 1 649.95 for both current and next-generation platforms.

It was only in conversation not too long ago that we mentioned the impact, power and aggressiveness Walt Disney is seemingly attacking the traditional broadcasting and streaming service markets with. When you consider the assets and content they have, you can’t argue that it’s only a matter of time until the company completely dominates the market, and that is a spoiler alert from us.

Taking that a step further, the company has confirmed that it has acquired the multiyear rights to broadcast the National Basketball League (NBA) across the African continent, which started effectively on 14 February 2020, exclusively on paid TV in English on ESPN and ESPN 2.

Considered the top basketball league in the world and featuring the world’s most talented players, the NBA is the latest to be added to ESPN’s already iconic and popular league and sporting event lineup from the United States and across the globe.

Sports fanatics and just pure fans of the sport alike can look forward to regular-season games, the NBA Playoffs and the Conference Finals, as well as the peak of the basketball calendar, The Finals, the NBA’s annual championship series. For the remainder of the season, fans will be able to watch live games per week on Fridays and Sundays, including Friday ESPN double-headers and the NBA Sunday games.

Additional programing will include the broadcast of the NBA Draft in June, where each NBA team can select eligible players from across the U.S. and the globe to play in the league. With more games, specials and events being lined up – including exciting programming created especially for fans in Africa – viewers have one destination to watch all the NBA action.

“By securing these rights for Africa, ESPN is able to further its commitment to bringing premier content to audiences and growing the diversity of programming on the channels,” says Evert van der Veer, Vice President of Media Networks for The Walt Disney Company Africa. “We are thrilled to share in the passion and excitement of this league with fans across the continent.”

The action on ESPN and ESPN 2 is now freely available to follow. You can also add to that by following further action on http://africa.espn.com, and @espnafrica on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
