Nedbank has created YouthX, a movement to encourage the birth of ideas by allowing the youth of our country to exchange with each other to unlock their overall full potential.

The youth will have an opportunity to learn from, and engage with, changemakers at the Tech & Innovation YouthX Live event, happening at the Hearty Collective in Cape Town, this Saturday, 19th of November. Last year’s Tech & Innovation Changemaker of the Year, Keitumetse Pule, will be part of the four changemakers in this category. With the programme kick-starting at 12h00 midday, Attendees can look forward to masterclasses from Ulrico Grech-Cumbo, co-founder of one of the biggest virtual reality studios; Dr Cherise Dunn, a pioneer of bringing 3D printing; and Baratang Miya, founder of GirlHype Code.

Joining the changemakers will be Linda Gcwabe, financial education facilitator from Nedbank, who will share valuable tips on equipping the youth with financial education and practical tools to help them make better money choices. Mainstream artists such as Hiphop start YoungstaCPT and Dee Koala will be handling the entertainment duties as well as competitions with great prizes that will be up for grabs throughout the day.

‘Unemployment has been an ongoing challenge, especially among the youth of South Africa. We hope that with these industry leaders can spark inspiration with those attending the event to encourage them to get that big idea off the ground,’ said Nedbank’s Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Khensani Nobanda. ‘As we look forward to the 4th YouthX Live event, we urge young people to register, join the movement and learn from our experts in the Tech & Innovation space,’ she said.

Keitumetse Pule won the Changemaker of the Year Award based on her entry for an app she was developing to help make legal education and services more accessible. ‘Nedbank YouthX has impacted me and my business positively. The support I received in funding was crucial to building my app and growing our business. I am looking forward to seeing the programme do the same for someone else this year as the assistance I received helped immensely in getting my business to where it is today,’ says Pule.

With three successful YouthX Live events in the Arts & Culture category, Sport & Entertainment category and Social Good & Sustainability all wrapped up, Tech & Innovation is the final category in the hybrid series of events. Anyone can attend, whether in person or via streaming on the YouthX app or Unlocked.me. Tickets to attend the physical event are free and available at Ticket Pro.

If you’re running a small business and have problems receiving payments, things are about to look up for you. The folks over at Nedbank announced a new collaboration with Mastercard and Ukheshe, that sees the launch of Money Message, a new payment platform that lets small and microbusinesses receive in-chat payments from their customers via WhatsApp.

According to Nedbank’s statement, the solution will enable business owners to send an invoice requesting a payment from any customer seamlessly through WhatsApp. The customers in turn can quickly settle a payment directly from the platform.

‘The need for a diverse range of contactless payment methods is more important today than we could have possibly imagined, as we seek to rebuild the economy by giving businesses the ability to transact in a safe and secure way,’ says Chipo Mushwana, Executive: Emerging Payments at Nedbank.

Anyone with a valid South African identity document and South African bank account can make use of Money Message. Business owners, or Merchants as the bank likes to call them, will need to first register for the service, which is completed within a matter of minutes, and afterwards, they can immediately initiate a payment request.

In the same breath, Nedbank admits that while other institutions have released banking functionality that works through WhatsApp, Money Message is unique in that it has been specifically developed to process payments for merchants and small businesses. Rather than a banking plug-in.

A beta version of Money Message has been available to a small selection of micro merchants for just over a month and will gradually reach the broader market during the rest of the year. However, business owners can register through the appropriate channels.

Paying your parking tickets in these tryin’ times is about to get a modern world makeover, at least in Gauteng, where Nedbank has, alongside Skidata, have looked into opening up mobile payment options.

The option comes in the form of the an in-app featured dubbed scan to pay which can be found within the Nedbank Money app. Scan to park allows anyone with a Masterpass-enabled QR code scanning banking app or digital wallet to scan their parking ticket and make instant payment – without ever having to handle cash or physically touch a parking pay station.

Parking lots where visitors to the malls can scan their ticket for instant payment are clearly marked with SKIDATA signage.

According to Josephine Baliah, Head of Acceptance Business Solutions for Nedbank, scan to park is another South African digital innovation conceptualised by Nedbank as part of its commitment to deliver value-adding payment solutions that go beyond banking.

Scan to park leverages Masterpass, Mastercard’s scan-to-pay service, which enables consumers to transact with any bank card through a secure app on their mobile phones. Each Masterpass transaction is protected by multiple layers of security, ensuring the user’s personal and payment details are protected.

For now, scan-to-park ticket vending machines are already in use at a number of leading shopping malls in Gauteng, including Melrose Arch, Sandton City, and Nelson Mandela Square, and are currently being rolled out to Eastgate and Liberty Midlands Mall. A total of 99 shopping centres across the country have been earmarked for installation of the technology in the coming months.

Nedbank, one of Mzansi’s four largest banks, launched Secrets, a new short-form movie that puts an uncomfortable topic at the head of the national agenda following prompts by the current context of a nation plagued by unsustainable money behaviours.

Secrets tells the stories of three South Africans. The stories chronicle the devastating impact on them and those around them caused by their secret, unquestioned money habits. It stars Brett Williams, Hlubi Mboya and Lindiwe Dim, Faniswa Yisa, Tevin Musara and Rolanda Marias.

This initiative was inspired by alarming statistics, where one in three South Africans have lost money investing in pyramid schemes; three out of five South Africans spend more than they earn, and 82% of small businesses fail because of bad cash-flow management.

“We’re excited about this being a first for the financial services industry, and with the topic being that of money, which is viewed as taboo, we wanted to keep Nedbank’s involvement secret until the launch to provide maximum impact—and to connect with the movie’s theme,” says Khensani Nobanda, Group Executive Marketing & Corporate Affairs at Nedbank. “Money is something nobody likes talking about, and this movie shows graphically how toxic these secrets can be.

Indeed, stories are powerful ways of communicating important issues in all cultures, so go ahead fix your popcorn and watch Nedbank’s exciting new film below.

To call the mobile-based card processing business crowded would be a slight understatement — launching a reader is nearly an instinctual reaction for commerce outlets that see Nedbank running away with the market. What’s to stop another bank from joining the fray? ABSA doesn’t see anything wrong, as it’s starting up a me-too service through Thumbzup. The headphone jack reader with Android, BB OS and iOS support (full list of supported devices after the jump) will seem very familiar to anyone who’s been paying attention; the company does have some tantalizing lures for entrepreneurs, however, such as an ever-so-slightly lower 3.2 percent fee per transaction as well as a year-long deals marketing service subscription for any 2014 sign-ups. SA shops that haven’t already jumped on the bandwagon with Nedbank (or Groupon, or PayPal ) can pre-order a reader today and start taking payments right now, as you read this.
