Sandton City partners with the Riky Rick Foundation to mark Mental Health Awareness Month

Sandton City has unveiled the next chapter of its Words That Heal campaign in collaboration with the Riky Rick Foundation for the promotion of emotional well-being, this mental health awareness month. What began as a nationwide call to share words of encouragement has now grown into a moving song of hope and an immersive in-centre experience that celebrates the power of creative expression in supporting youth mental wellness.

The Song That Speaks to Healing

Earlier this year, Sandton City shoppers were invited to share heartfelt voice notes of encouragement, things that they would like to say to people who are struggling. A selection of these messages, drawn from hundreds of submissions, have now been woven into a powerful original song, also titled Words That Heal, featuring the voice of Riky Rick. The hip hop song celebrates resilience and reminds listeners that no one is alone in their journey.

Now available online and on YouTube, the track reflects the campaign’s core message: that words have the power to connect, comfort, and inspire. Every person can play a part in turning awareness into action, making mental health a national conversation that continues beyond the month of October. Listen to the song below:

Experience the Movement at Sandton City

From now until Sunday 9 November, shoppers can step into the Words That Heal experiential pop-up activation, situated on the upper level next to BOSS in Sandton City. Designed in collaboration with acclaimed artist Samurai Farai, the space showcases limited-edition T-shirts, hoodies, and scarves inspired by “artivism,” the meeting point of creativity and activism that Riky Rick championed.

All proceeds from these merchandise sales will go directly to the Riky Rick Foundation, which supports youth mental well-being and creates platforms for creative expression as a form of healing. Visitors can also pledge their support online at www.rikyrickfoundation.co.za/pledges to contribute to mental health initiatives across the country.

Every day, South Africa loses an estimated 23 people to suicide, with hundreds more attempting to take their lives. Through this initiative, Sandton City aims to continue to provide hope, raise awareness and champion meaningful conversations around mental health.

Quick Catch-Up With Ster Kinekor’s Motheo Matsau

As you might have noticed we attend several movie screenings/premieres. All of these wouldn’t be possible without the Ster Kinekor guys who are always class acts and deliver the best movie experience around. At the recent Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom screening that took place at the recently revamped Sandton City cinema, we were lucky enough to catch up with Ster’s Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Mr Motheo Matsau who was kind enough to indulge us in a couple of curiosities we had not only from Ster Kinekor but also from a general movies point of view.

Inside Ster-Kinekor’s revamed cinema at Sandton City Mall

During the recent screening of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom we found out about a cool new feature from Ster Kinekor and were lucky enough to check it out. One thing is for sure, it’s going to be a huge hit with kids and parents alike. Specifically, the Ster-Kinekor Sandton City Mall cinema has undergone renovations…and it opened with a bang…and customers won’t stop smiling.

The cinema complex, situated within the exciting revamped Sandton City Mall, boasts of the second kids’ cinema in the country since the launch of the first kids’ cinema in June last year at the East Rand Mall, additional luxurious Cine Prestige 3D cinemas with their own VIP Lounge area and exclusive catering offers.

Says, Ryan Williams, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres: “Ster-Kinekor promises a wonderful new shopping experience, so it is only fitting that a state-of-the-art cinema experience should form an integral part of the entertainment offering.”

“We are very excited about the face-lift entertainment offering that we believe will certainly contribute to an influx of customers to the mall complex. At Ster-Kinekor, we understand that people demand high quality entertainment, and a great night out at the movies is our response to satisfy this expectation,” remarks Williams.

The new layout of the cinema has an express counter to the left and 15 new self-service terminals, where you can book tickets and catering combos.

Customers can select their catering options, pre-order and pay for these at the terminal, and then simply collect their order at the catering counter.

The result is a streamlined cinema experience for our customers, and reduced queue times: these are proving to be a great success at the various sites where we have introduced this innovative technology – and we are confident that they are going to have the same desired results here.
