Sully…I have to be honest when I first saw the title of this movie I initially had a “meh” reaction to it. This eventually changed when I got around to seeing the official poster which had Tom Hanks on it. That was enough to change my mind instantly and immediately spiked my interest. The cherry on top was finding out that it’s a Clint Eastwood movie…talk about a killer combination right?

Two stalwarts who have never put a foot wrong in any of their previous material, in fact they’re probably two of the best examples for many to follow. Both great actors, storytellers and directors who have done it all before. A perfect combination on paper but did it translate as well onscreen?

Based on a recent true story, Sully is set on events that took place on January 15, 2009 when veteran US Airways Pilots Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffery “Jeff” Skiles boarded US Airways Flight 1549 departing from LaGuardia Airport and took off. Barely three minutes into the flight, disaster strikes, the Airbus A320 hits a flock of Canada Geese (I know right? What are the chances?), which cripple both engines of the A320.

Without engine power and no airport within range, Sully is forced to land his ill-fated airliner in the frigid waters of the Hudson River. With 155 passengers and crew on board, Sully, against immeasurable odds, successfully ditches the aircraft, sparing the lives of the crew and passengers and he is dubbed a hero by the press for his actions. But soon afterwards, Sully’s life is invaded by reporters and investigators who force Sully to put his job, family and reputation on the line.

The above description gives you a great idea of what it’s all about. It doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t, it’s a great story based on true events about an unbelievable and skilled pilot who did what he had to, to save 155 lives. A great story and one that will keep you engaged throughout, I know I was. Tom Hanks is immense in the role, but then again did you expect anything less?

Cast – Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart & Laura Linney

Genre – Autobiography, Drama

Director – Clint Eastwood

Running Time – 96 minutes

After seeing it I can safely say that it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, yes it’s true. And probably the best autobiographic dramas around, Clint Eastwood did a stellar with this, but again though, did you expect anything else? It’s a definite must see and I’m glad I took the chance to see it…it’s usually not the type of movie I would go to the cinema to go and see. Two giants in the movie industry linking up to produce magic and tell a story of a great, humble and unbelievable human being. Aaron Eckhart also deserves a special mention, a great supporting act he is in his role as First Officer Jeffery “Jeff” Skiles.

A worthy contender for an Oscar, Sully gets a great 4 out of 5 rating from me!
