The latest installment is titled Terminator: Dark Fate and like we mentioned in our preview, we didn’t want to entertain the thought of there being another one of these especially one that still had Arnie in it but little did we know that him being in it is fitting and makes perfect sense.

Hosted at the newly revamped Ster-Kinekor cinema at the colorful and flashy Carnival City, we got to see this one at a packed setting with many awaiting to see what this classic sci-fi action movie had to offer. Terminator: Dark Fate is essentially a reset of the franchise meaning there will be another one carried by a new story line and focus. This will either find favor with some (like us) and some might not be huge fans (like we heard from some who watched). We look forward to seeing where this franchise is taken especially with the new direction adopted. New kid on the block Natalia Reyes will form a huge part of this new approach and be central to it all.

The premise for it is set more than two decades passing since Sarah Connor prevented Judgment Day, changed the future, and re-wrote the fate of the human race. Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) is living a simple life in Mexico City with her brother (Diego Boneta) and father when a highly advanced and deadly new Terminator — a Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna) — travels back through time to hunt and kill her. Dani’s survival depends on her joining forces with two warriors: Grace (Mackenzie Davis), an enhanced super-soldier from the future, and a battle-hardened Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). As the Rev-9 ruthlessly destroys everything and everyone in its path on the hunt for Dani, the three are led to a T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from Sarah’s past that may be their last best hope.

As expected, this one has fantastic action sequences that will no doubt have you off your seat a couple of times. It’s a great action movie that delivers on what many expected it to with the opening sequence being something we quite liked a lot. Having said that though, the story line is a bit thin and certainly more could have been done with that but despite that, it still makes for a solid watch. The cast is perfectly put together with the inclusion of the previously mentioned Natalia Reyes as well as Mackenzie Davis who carry the movie for the large part. Old guns such as Linda Hamilton and of course Arnold Schwarzenegger close the loop perfectly with the latter offering a mature and solid performance.

Terminator: Dark Fate is a great action movie and one that we welcome back into the movieverse complete with a new and fresh approach. Largely driven by a female cast (an interesting decision and one that worked quite well), it’s going to be interesting to see where the franchise is taken. A bit thin on the story line but nothing to put anyone off it completely. Sci-fi, action and fanboys of the franchise will no doubt find this to be a solid offering, like we did. A good one to make an effort to go and see on any given day, Terminator: Dark Fate gets a 7 out of 10 rating from us.

Away from the scary stuff are fantastic titles to also look forward to such as Terminator: Dark Fate, Charlie’s Angels, 21 Bridges and Ford vs Ferrari, the epic story of the 1966 showdown between the two icons at Le Mans, all of which are coming out in IMAX, Ster-Kinekor’s larger-than-life immersive film experience – as well as in in D-BOX, where high-tech seating ensures that you’re moved in more ways than one.

Despite our initial objections, intrigue is something that has always driven us and so we once again find ourselves intrigued by this one. If anything we are interested in seeing how this one plays out, plus we’ve seen all the previous ones and enjoyed them (to some degree) so why not this one? So yes, it’s like he said, he’s definitely back!
