Volkswagen South Africa’s best selling vehicle is the Polo Vivo with 20 866 units sold in 2022. That is followed up by the Polo which sold 15 697 units while Volkswagen’s third best-selling selling model was the T-Cross with 10 384 units sold.

This amounts to roughly 74% of Volkswagen vehicles sold in South Africa.

To put things into perspective, Volkswagen sold 63 601 (Volkswagen Passenger Cars: 58 447, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: 5 154) vehicles in Mzansi, in 2022 alone.

Elsewhere, the Volkswagen Taigo recorded 1 885 sales in 2022. Mind you, it was only launched in June. The refreshed Volkswagen T-Roc sold 2 407 units last year, while the Volkswagen Tiguan range (including Tiguan Allspace and Tiguan R) sold 2 613 units during the same time.

Despite severe stock and parts shortages last year, the Volkswagen Golf range also improved sales by 109% in 2022 with 639 units sold.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan pricing gets announced

Volkswagen has announced the MSRP range for the 2021 Tiguan, which is, in our eyes at least, the automaker’s best SUV. The starting MSRP for an Tiguan 1.4 TSI is R521 000. The next step up the ladder is the 1.4 TSI DSG R Line starting at R644 500. Lastly, the 4Motion derivative of the DSG R-Line is priced from R710 000.

The new Tiguan now has a sharper exterior design, new technological highlights and a host of new interior features.

Now in its third generation, the Tiguan has sold over six million units globally since launch and over 41 000 units in South Africa. The Tiguan was the best-selling medium SUV in South Africa in 2020, with 4 280 units sold and a 16.2% share of the A SUV segment.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is arriving soon, and it’s coming with a new face along with fresh interior updates. But how soon? According to Volkswagen SA, Mzansi will get the refreshed Tiguan in the third quarter of this year.

It’s quite far off, but the new VW Tiguan will make it worth the wait, I must tell you. And while pricing is still a bit sketchy at this point, Volkswagen was kind enough to release spec details about the model line-up we’ll see at launch. According to the German carmaker, the new Tiguan will receive updated powertrains, a bevy of fresh technology, and a revitalized fascia.

Based on what we’re seeing, it seems the new Tiguan’s fascia has been redesigned, the bonnet is more concise in its appearance and the new radiator grille with LED headlights is also wider. Then there’s the new IQ.LIGHT – LED matrix headlights which feature 22 individual LEDs per headlight offering enhanced convenience for night-time driving. It also bears a striking resemblance to the Golf 8, which doesn’t come as a surprise. The aim was to give the Tiguan a sharper, sportier vibe while maintaining the dignified vibe of the outgoing model.

Meanwhile, the interior would look similar to the current Tiguan’s layout, but there’s a new MIB3 multimedia infotainment system with standard Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The new Tiguan also benefits from a new, meatier steering wheel. The air conditioning functions have also been digitalised by means of touch sliders and touch buttons. A first for the Tiguan and the Volkswagen model range is the premium and optional Harmon Kardon sound system, with a 16-channel amplifier, eight speakers and a subwoofer.

On the safety front, the Tiguan has an array of fresh driving aids including advanced lane changing assist emergency braking with front assist, traffic jam assist, and road sign recognition.

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan will remain powered by previous model engines such as the 1.4 TSI with 110kW of power, 2.0 TDI with 130kW of power and 2.0 TSI with 162kW of power.
