Volvo Cars has officially begun production of the EX60 at its Torslanda manufacturing plant in Sweden. This marks a landmark achievement for the brand, as the EX60 is the first fully electric Volvo to be designed, developed, and manufactured entirely within its home country.

With global order books for the mid-size SUV already exceeding internal forecasts, Volvo has increased its 2026 production targets and will keep the Torslanda facility operational for an additional week over the European summer to meet the surge in demand.

car bodies roll through the final assembly. The EX60 begins production in the Volvo Cars Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Performance and Class-Leading Range

The EX60 serves as the all-electric successor to the popular XC60 and introduces the new SPA3 (Scalable Product Architecture 3) platform. This architecture allows the flagship P12 AWD variant to achieve a class-leading range of up to 810 km (WLTP) on a single charge, facilitated by a 117 kWh battery.

The lineup also includes the P10 AWD with a 660 km range and the entry-level P6 RWD, which offers 620 km. In terms of raw performance, the top-tier P12 AWD produces 500 kW and 790 Nm of torque, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds – making it the most powerful production car in Volvo’s history.

Next-Generation Charging and Architecture

A big highlight of the EX60 is its 800-volt electrical system, which is a first for the brand.

This allows for ultra-fast DC charging speeds of up to 400 kW, enabling the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 16 to 18 minutes. Under optimal conditions, the SUV can add 340 km of range in just 10 minutes.

car bodies roll through the final assembly. The EX60 begins production in the Volvo Cars Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The vehicle also makes use of megacasting technology, a process that replaces hundreds of individual parts with a single high-precision aluminum casting to reduce weight and improve structural rigidity, further contributing to its efficiency and handling dynamics.

The start of production follows a SEK 10 billion (approximately R24 billion) investment into the Torslanda plant. The upgrades include a new battery assembly facility, a fully refurbished paint shop, and the integration of megacasting equipment.

South African Availability

Volvo South Africa has confirmed that the EX60 is scheduled to arrive in the local market during the third quarter of 2026.

Once in a very long while you tell yourself that you’ll be spending the upcoming long weekend doing nothing but binging on that season of Modern Family you never really paid mind to. Well, you see that’s what I thought until the 2021 Volvo XC60 T6 arrived on my driveway.

With less than 200km on the clock, it was the perfect excuse to get out of the house and explore parts of the Free State and KwaZulu Natal. Before we get into the specifics of my weekend, let me turn your attention to the XC60. Volvo’s reinvention has been a bright star in the auto industry, and with the XC60 SUV it had set to bring that thoroughly Swedish thinking into the mainstream. Other than the XC40, its Volvo’s entry to Swedish luxury.

To such an extent that Volvo expects 60-percent of XC60 buyers to be converts from competitors like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi, who might ordinarily find themselves behind the wheel of a GLC 300 4MATIC, X3 xDrive, or Q5. And they’re right. Getting behind the wheel of the Volvo XC60 makes you forget about all the other cars on the road. There is no envy whatsoever. That’s how much of a complete package this vehicle is.

For starters, when you’re looking at the XC60 one can see that it’s a very intentional mixture of the old XC60 and the newer XC90. Buyer feedback about the design of the old car was so positive, even in its final year of production. As a result, Volvo didn’t want to mess too much with a winning formula.

Still, its clearly a sibling to Volvo’s largest SUV. The short overhangs are there, as are the distinctive Thor’s Hammer LED headlamps which now connect with the large, chromed grille.

Inside, Volvo’s cabin remains a pleasant place to find yourself. The seats are comfortable for long-distance cruising, and there’s plenty of high-quality materials for your fingers to find like real metal and Nappa leather. Gone is the open-pore wood we saw in the XC90 T8, replaced with silver mesh trim for this XC60 T8, but there’s no compromise on cargo space.

There’s a 12.3-inch display for the driver’s instrumentation – complete with an easy-to-follow gauge showing you where the electrons are flowing – and a superb Harmon Kardon audio system on the options list. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is a head-up display, navigation, panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats plus steering wheel, and a 360-degree camera. We love this from Volvo.

I can’t fault Volvo’s safety tech, however. Adaptive cruise control, LED headlamps with corner-bending lights, front and rear collision mitigation and lane-keeping assistance, blind spot warnings with rear cross-traffic alerts, and parking assistance are all included. Pilot Assist, Volvo’s hands-on driver assistance package with lane-keeping, is available, and works well, though I’m more excited about the Highway Pilot system the automaker aims to introduce from 2022.

On the road, Volvo’s decision to go with smaller displacement engines and rely on turbocharging and supercharging for the pep drivers expect again proves its worth. The XC60 T6 is fast off the line, the supercharger handing over seamlessly to the turbo as you rise through the revs. Maximum torque arrives from 2,200 rpm, and the automatic does a good job keeping you in that band; there’s no shortage of power for overtaking at highway speeds. What that will do to economy remained to be seen; as my test model was still out of the box new, it was hard to get those figures right to my driving style. After a few days the true figures showed themselves. I averaged about 12.0l per 100km.

Switch between comfort and dynamic drive modes, meanwhile, and there’s an instantly noticeable change in the XC60’s attitude. The gearbox favours lower gears, holding on longer before upshifts and being swifter to kick down; the steering is weightier and the air suspension firmer, cutting what’s already minimal body-roll even further.

It is honestly not hard not to be impressed by the 2021 XC60 T6. Undercutting its German rivals when comparatively spec’d, it’s another example of Volvo trusting its own identity: it feels like an unashamedly Scandinavian SUV. It’ll set you back from R820 000.

Oh, and my road trip? Let’s say it would take us more than 800 words to unpack a 1000km long journey.
