We will always remember Charlize Theron as one of our own and one of the few who made it big (like really big) in Hollywood. She’s back in Netflix’s next big blockbuster called The Old Guard. One we earmarked not too long ago as one to watch, as always thanks to our friends from the streaming giant we got the opportunity to sit down and watch the movie a little earlier before everyone else.
While you wait for your turn and if you haven’t seen them already, get a bit of a taste of what it’s all about below:
Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond The Lights), The Old Guard is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.
Make no mistake, Charlize Theron is front and center in this one with this probably being her coolest role yet. We were especially impressed by the qualities her role exudes, including a lot of swag, style, power and leadership. She expertly leads an impressive cast that also includes KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, Matthias Schoenaerts and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
One of the main things we look out for in any piece of TV/Film content is the concept and The Old Guard presents a very interesting one. In as much as some of the themes might look airily familiar to other movies, what this movie does great is it presents them in a totally different way and unlike any other way we’ve seen in previous movies.
Built for the pure action movie lover at heart, The Old Guard includes great fighting scenes and action sequences that come off in a thrilling and enjoyable manner. The movie is very straightforward, uncomplicated with a great dose of action and storytelling throughout. One thing we would have liked to see more of is in some of the themes further elaborated on, specifically the origins of the core characters. We felt that wasn’t properly defined and is instead only touched on.
Despite that little niggle, which isn’t a massive issue, you can count us as ones very impressed and no doubt it will get its fair share of eyeballs when it lands on the network this Friday (July 10). It’s full of swag and enjoyable action sequences. Also, be sure to watch until the end, the last scene has us asking, is there going to be a sequel? There are currently whispers about that but nothing confirmed yet, if it is indeed true then sign us up for the entire trilogy!
Netflix’s next big blockbuster, The Old Guard lands on Friday (July 10). It’s worth your time, trust.
