For the three past months – or so – I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved as a media guest on a few car launches by some of the country’s leading manufacturers.
Not that I’m distancing myself from the tech industry. Fact remains, it will always be my first love and something of which this passion fireball will remain burning for. But its always fun to get to explore other, different industries; how their markets behave, how their media associates and partners behave, perceive new developments within their field and see how they resonate. Interesting times.
This past week I was in Cape Town for the launch of (ha Japanese Crossover, before that it was an American brand that chose Durban for their festivities. About a month ago, a German brand chose Free State’s Golden Gate route as host to their doo.
You see where I’m getting at? None of my beloved car brands have chosen Gauteng, or the golden route rahter, to host their launch events at. Could it be that Gauteng kacks that picturesque appeal? (Hello Cradle of Humankind)
I had to ask, so I posed the question to a few journo’s on why Gauteng is not the ideal location. The obvious; “we all stay in Gauteng so its good to visit neww places” came up, followed by a coy “e-tolls are a problem” by one of the brand managers.
E-tolls are a problem? If only they knew Kings Price‘s premiums and cover remain unchanged – even with the implementation of e-tolls and e-tolls credit. That’s according to their blog.
Tolls aside, we discussed, commented, gave feedback and others took their stance that Gauteng is not the best place to host a vehicle launch after all. Well, given that we were launching an urban crossover (marketed to soccer moms and young couples) maybe, just maybe the city (Johannesburg) would’ve been the perfect place to host its launch at.
