Local film content is clearly on the up, we also eluded to this fact not too long ago here. This is great news of course and it goes without saying. One of the current and great examples is our feature today, Uncovered, which we luckily got to see a little earlier courtesy of the usual suspects, our friends at Ster-Kinekor at the movie’s classy and snazzy premiere hosted at The Zone in Rosebank on Thursday night.
Our last experience with a similar setting involving another local movie (which won’t be named) wasn’t the best…the movie wasn’t that is, the event was all good. In light of that we were a bit skeptical going into this one, the last local movie left a not so great taste in our mouths as it still ranks as one of the worst movies we have seen to date, yes we said it. Luckily this happened a while ago and it seems the standard has been more than amplified, Uncovered being a great example of that. By far not perfect but there’s a lot to like about this one.
Cast – Nqobile Khumalo, Fezile Makhanya, Sthandiwe Kgoroge, DJ Happygirl, Dumisani Mbebe. Sorisha Naidoo and Thenjiwe Khambule
Director – Zuko Nodada
Genre – Drama/Thriller
The theme of the story is one of Mzansi’s most burning topics currently; LAND! Uncovered tells the story of a fearless female journalist who takes on a mine magnate in search for the truth about the people who killed her parents. In her journey she uncovers a lot of corruption and loses another family member in the process.
As mentioned, there’s a lot to like about this flick, one of these is the fact that it’s not just a local movie but also feels like a local movie. It doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not and the story line isn’t complicated, these are elements that make it an easy watch and enable it to flow well from one instance to the next. The large use of vernacular and regular language (including local slang) we are accustomed to was great to see.
In terms of the more technical stuff, the movie isn’t perfect with some of the scenes cutting off too quickly and some being a bit too theatrical for our liking. Luckily these are only few and far in between and isn’t enough to put you off completely. One of the things we especially enjoyed was the quality of acting more so from the lead Nqobile Khumalo who literally drives and carries the movie with her fantastic performance.
As an overall package, Uncovered is a great advert for our country and definitely one we can be proud to showcase to the rest of the world. It’s probably one of the best local movies we have watched in a good while. Not perfect with the inclusion of a few niggles, but luckily for it the good overrides the bad elements. One we are definitely willing to put our support behind and recommend to you to anyone. Do the right thing in support of local content, no doubt you will enjoy this one so go see it. Uncovered gets a 6 out of 5 rating from us and its exclusively going to be screening at Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationwide from 30 August 2019.
