It’s not everyday when an international brand we’ve admired for years come knocking on our doors. Fact, the last time one knocked was over 2 years ago – ha! The brand in question is the guys over at Moshi. They came knocking and bearing gifts, mind you. We answered.
The gift in question? The Moshi Otto Q Wireless (Fast) Charging pad. For those not familiar with the brand, Moshi was founded in California in 2005, They’ve dubbed themselves as a purveyor of accessories for modern living – “We thrive on envisioning new ways to improve your life. Our design and engineering experts select only the finest materials to follow our mantra of making fewer, better products.” says their website.
We couldn’t let this opportunity to sample an award winning product pass us by, so, over the past 3 months we’ve been living with the Q Wireless charging pad and we’ve been mighty impressed by how smart it is, and by its fast charging capabilities. Let’s get into things.
First Impressions Count
Upon unboxing, the Moshi Q Wireless Charging Pad looks exactly like what the product sheet explains; It is inspired by Danish design and acts as a cradle to your phone – or tablet and other compatible devices. We tried it on our Huawei P40 Pro, LG Velvet 5G and Samsung Galaxy Buds Live and it worked perfectly. Nothing more. The real experience comes from interacting with the device. It feels and smells expensive. The materials are expensive. All worthy of the R1 500 price tag when using current exchange figures.
Our review device is finished in a grey mash like material, even the base is grey.
It’s all in the technology
As we’ve mentioned earlier, thanks to Moshi’s proprietary Q-coil technology, the Otto Q charges up to 15 W and even charges through cases up to 5 mm thick. There’s an interesting feature called Foreign Object Detection which automatically shuts off charging if metal objects are placed on the charging surface. There’s also a non-slip grip, LED indicator which shows your current charging status at a glance too.
Qi Certification is in place offering piece of mind for Qi devices including Samsung, Google, Apple, and LG smartphones, and AirPods.
Verdict?
The Q Wireless Charging Pad is exactly that and nothing more. We’re impressed by quality, looks and how it fits in with the rest of our modern desk setup. We’re further blown away by the fast charging capabilities given that this is a wireless charging pad. Apart from that, we can’t seem to justify the R1 500 price tag – which does not include a fast charging adapter.
