The drama genre has been heating up of late with some impressive movies coming through from the genre. Some of these titles include award winning flicks such as Moonlight, Mr. Church and Fences just to mention a few. Adding to that list is Gifted, a movie successfully led by a man, who these days is synonymous with the first avenger Captain America, otherwise known as Chris Evans, starring in a very different role this time around.
The title itself Gifted probably doesn’t fill one with much excitement but the same can be said for the other previously mentioned movies above. That’s probably not the point of it all though as the content from each is what counts is most important. The same can be said for the movie in focus today.
Cast – Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate & Octavia Spencer
Director – Marc Webb
Genre – Drama
Running Time – 1h 41m
What’s it based on anyway?
Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the 7-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary.
Gifted is simple, straightforward and doesn’t look to complicate things. This coupled with a solid cast makes it quite an enjoyable movie to watch. The standout performer from it McKenna Grace who, as mentioned, plays the role of 7-year-old mathematical genius Mary. It still amazes me how many of these young actors there are and most of all, how they manage to fully grasp and encapsulate the roles they’re put in. The movie is light, fun and mostly heartwarming – qualities that endeared it to me and will no doubt do the same for others.
There’s not much else to say about it without spoiling it too much which I don’t want to. This however doesn’t mean that it’s not worth your time or at least a watch because it is. Officially in cinemas this Friday, Gifted probably won’t win any major awards or something like that but it does present an idea and executes it quite well. It gets a 3 out of 5 from me.
