From the gutters of Hollywood, express to Showmax, comes The Idol, a new HBO Original series from Emmy-nominated Euphoria creator-director, Sam Levinson, and Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning pop star Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, who co-stars alongside Lily-Rose Depp in her breakthrough lead role.

Fresh from scandalising the Cannes Film Festival last month, the 18LSDN The Idol is currently the #14 Most Popular TV Series on IMDb, with The Guardian already calling it “2023’s most controversial show.”

Depp plays mega-star Jocelyn, whose nervous breakdown derailed her last tour. Will her romantic awakening with club owner and self-help guru Tedros (Tesfaye) help her claim her rightful status as America’s sexiest pop idol or take her to the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?

Tesfaye was born to Ethiopian immigrants, left home at 17, was homeless for a while, and started out releasing songs anonymously on YouTube before Blinding Lights became Spotify’s most streamed song of all time.

Both Levinson and Depp, meanwhile, are Hollywood babies. Levinson is the son of Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson, the man behind classics like Good Morning, Vietnam, Wag the Dog, and Rain Man, while Depp is the eldest child of former couple Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.

So it’s no surprise that fame is a central theme on the show. “I’ve always been fascinated with celebrity and fame, particularly the bubble that many people live in where it’s a totally fictional reality,” says Levinson. “They’re surrounded by myth-makers who are constantly curating a reality that isn’t true.”

He’s full of praise for his lead actress. “She was sensational. And she could sing! There is something about Lily-Rose… When she tapped into this character, there was a fearlessness beyond anything I’ve ever seen. There’s no fear of embarrassment; no fear of how she looks; no holding back.”

Levinson compares the protectiveness Cannes audiences felt towards Jocelyn to our feelings for Zendaya’s character in Euphoria. “It’s similar I think to how we feel about Rue in Euphoria — we feel helpless. It’s a lot like parenthood. I often look at my son and think, ‘I really wish you wouldn’t do that.’ But they have to find their own way. There’s a constant tension in hoping and wishing that they make the right decision.”

HBO filmed a 2021 version of The Idol that was eventually scrapped. Levinson explains, “I had been tied up with Euphoria season two during the first shoot, so I didn’t see footage until Abel and I watched a few early cuts together. This was after the season two finale of Euphoria aired and Ashley had given birth to our son. As co-creators, we’d been so excited about The Idol, but felt the early iteration unfortunately wasn’t delivering what we needed it to. Abel asked me, ‘If we make a few tweaks, do you think it can be great?’ I said, ‘I think it’ll be good. But I don’t think it’s going be great.’ I have so much respect for Abel as an artist. I first saw him perform in 2011 at The Hollywood Bowl. I remember he stood behind the microphone the entire time and never moved an inch.

He was so shy. Then ten years later, I went to Coachella with him, around when we were deciding to redo The Idol. For that performance, he knew he needed to work the audience. His charisma was phenomenal. He was smiling, dancing and I thought, ‘If this guy can go from that night at the Hollywood Bowl to this, I think our show can be better.’ We had to make some tough decisions about how to move forward and, with the support of HBO, we decided to take the show in a new direction; approach with fresh eyes. And I think the story we’re telling is better for it.”

One of the big changes was the location, with Tesfaye’s own house becoming a key set. “When we asked HBO if we could remake the show, we knew we’d have to do it for a lot less money. One night I was with Abel at his house in Bel Air. I’m looking around the place thinking, ‘This is a great set. HBO’s gonna want us to be really scrappy and thrifty. What do you think about us shooting here?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, that works. You’ll have insurance, right?’ (Laughs) I went back to HBO and said ‘We got the main location for free.’”

Another was shifting to a multi-camera approach. “I shot it almost like a reality show to help him feel less aware of the cameras,” says Levinson of Tesfaye. “In version one, he seemed to clench when he was filming, so it was amazing to see him relax and really become the character.”

And another was the tone. “I wanted to bring more comedy to it,” says Levinson. “The industry is such a funny, strange world … I wanted to get even more into the absurdities of it all.”

Levinson is full of praise for HBO. “I count my lucky stars every day that I’m working with HBO. They have real respect for the individual storyteller. They took a huge leap making this show and letting me work alongside Abel— a pop star who’d never acted before! So, we didn’t want to let them down. And I hope people are excited to see what we’ve made because it feels like something that we haven’t quite seen before.”

The breakout HBO hit is set 20 years after modern civilisation has been destroyed. Joel is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. But what starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal journey as the pair cross the US, depending on each other for survival.

Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) co-star as Joel and Ellie. Co-created by Emmy winner Craig Mazin Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann, creator of the acclaimed game that inspired the show, The Last of Us‘s cast also includes Emmy winner Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus), Critics Choice winner Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets) and Teen Choice nominee Storm Reid (Euphoria).

The series is now averaging 30.4 million viewers across its first six episodes, with the first episode approaching 40 million viewers in the U.S. Outside of the U.S., The Last Of Us is now the most-watched show in the history of HBO Max in both Europe and Latin America. The Last Of Us was a hit amongst fans and critics right out of the gate. Debuting to 4.7 million viewers in January, it has shown consistent growth throughout its first season despite enhanced competition from live sports telecasts and awards broadcasts. Sunday night’s finale audience marked a 75% increase in debut night viewing compared to the series premiere.

This week’s season finale, titled Look for the Light, has been celebrated as “satisfying and shocking” (IGN) and “gorgeous, evocative” (TVLine).
Rolling Stone praised the inaugural season as an “utterly fantastic debut season of television,” while The Ringer proclaimed this is “a must-see series,” Empire hailed it as “a masterpiece” and The Guardian gave it five stars, celebrating “one of the finest TV shows you will see this year… Desperately moving… A phenomenal blend of horror and heart, with a cast that could not be more perfect.”

Now streaming on Showmax, Phoenix Rising is a two-part HBO documentary that follows the true story of how Emmy-nominated Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood advocated for The Phoenix Act to extend the statute of limitations in California for domestic violence felonies, and moved toward naming her alleged abuser for the first time.

On 1 February 2021, Wood posted on Instagram, “The name of my abuser is Brian Warner, also known as Marilyn Manson.
Produced and directed by Oscar-, Emmy- and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg (The Case Against Adnan Syed, Deliver Us from Evil), the documentary has a 97% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus says, “Evan Rachel Wood is fearless in Phoenix Rising, a harrowing exposé on abuse, tabloid complicity, and the long process of healing.”

Every now and then across every generation an icon arises and few would argue that one of ours is without a doubt Barack Obama. The former American President is an individual who will live long in history for obvious reasons with his origins story also being something to look at with great interest and to some extent, is fascinating and enviable. Such is the interest in his story that it was only a matter of time that we would get a proper look at it and it couldn’t have come any better than my favourite filmmaking studio, HBO.

Given the opportunity to watch a little earlier by Showmax, I immediately jumped at the opportunity and there’s no explanation as to why that is. Now actively streaming on the network (Showmax) effective from this week, Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union chronicles the personal and political journey of President Obama as America grapples with its racial history.

A motivational and inspirational piece, the three-part docu-series is directed by seven-time Emmy winner Peter Kunhardt and executive produced by The New Yorker‘s Jelani Cobb. It has a 91% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with RogerEbert.com calling it “a comprehensive and compelling analysis… Kunhardt’s film brightly illuminates how essential the discussion of Obama’s handling of race is to American culture as a whole, especially when it was no accident that every president before him was a white man.”

Timed to coincide with the former president’s 60th birthday, Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union features the likes of politician Jesse Jackson, professors Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cornel West, political consultant David Axelrod, authors Michael Eric Dyson and Ta-Nehisi Coates, journalists Laura Washington and Michele Norris, reverends Alvin Love and Jeremiah Wright, speechwriter Jon Favreau and New Yorker editor David Remnick.

Told in a chronological manner, as expected with all HBO material, the series is well structured and is interspersed with Obama’s own speeches and news interviews. It begins with his childhood and takes us through his perspective as the son of a white mother from Kansas and an African father, his spiritual formation by a generation of Black leaders, and his hopes for a more inclusive America.

But, as Los Angeles Times, says, “HBO’s new documentary goes places the Obama media machine might not have… It ultimately sets itself apart by taking a deeper look at the multitude of issues that surfaced after America finally chose its first Black president.”

Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union is a great watch regardless of your opinions about the man himself. For those who are massive fans of his (like me), it will no doubt find a lot of favour and help give a wider look at the former President’s story and what his ultimate drive and motivation was and still is. It’s worth your time and you can stream all three episodes on Showmax.

Unique and stylish are two of the words we can use to describe HBO’s The Nevers, which is surely set to be a fave for many, us included. Brought to us a little a earlier thanks to Showmax who offered us a pre-screener as we briefly mentioned here, The Nevers is positioned as a 12 episode Victorian-era sci-fi drama series, a unique concept that is set to continue HBO’s much admired reputation of producing fantastic quality series.

HBO have confirmed that the first section of season 1 will consist of 6 episodes and effectively being “Part One” with the remaining 6 episodes (“Part Two”) set to air at a later unconfirmed date. The series was first announced in 2018 created by Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and stars Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Pip Torrens, Nick Frost, and Denis O’Hare. Interestingly, its creator (Whedon) was also set to serve as showrunner but then exited the show due to exhaustion, Phillipa Goslett effectively took his place.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs-ODufnJ8Y

Confusing at first, it must be said that before you watch it’s advisable to get a sense of the plot, something we didn’t fully do at first leading to the aforementioned confusion. Once you do, it all starts making sense and becomes an enjoyable watch. Speaking of the plot, The Nevers follows a group of women in Victorian-era England who mysteriously gain superhero abilities called “The Touch.” Two of the women, Amalia True (Donnelly) and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), try to save those with abilities and take them into their orphanage to protect them.

Shot in London, and like many others, production was briefly haulted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Thankfully filming resumed in September resulting in its official release. Showmax allowed us to watch the first 4 episodes and we’re now eagerly awaiting to watch the rest of “Part 1”. There’s literally nothing more satisfying than seeing power and strong women show off immense fighting skills and general expertise to complete an objective. Both Laura Donnelly and Penance Adair take center stage here with the former though being the key character that does most of the fighting scenes and who the story revolves around.

Women being front and center assuming roles of power and not the usual vulnerable states we’re accustomed to seeing, is one of the things we particularly liked about The Nevers. Certainly more roles of this nature should be afforded to women especially in the times we find ourselves in, seeing them play the vulnerable damsels in distress is tiring and been overdone, if anything it doesn’t reflect the current face of society.

The Nevers has a good tone and pacing to it. You will also be forgiven for thinking that it’s an X-Men-esque series shot in a slightly different time. The main draw was always going to be its creator, Joss Whedon, who has recently been covered in all kinds of controversy with allegations by actors (on other projects) accusing him of creating a toxic environment on sets. Despite that and the much talked about mess he created with the original Justice League movie, you can’t deny his brilliance as seen with his previous material.

With Whedon no longer set to be involved in this one, and despite the initial positive impression it has made on us, it will be interesting to see how it continues and what the overall reception will be from viewers. Thankfully, you won’t have that long to see it yourself, The Nevers is set to hit our small screens in a systematic manner with episodes 1 and 2 being available on 19 April with new episodes following suit from every Monday until 17 May.

Based on their relationship with HBO, Showmax have been able to obtain some of the best shows and documentaries the international network has to offer. Naturally, the momentum isn’t going to stop anytime soon with more fantastic content heading our way, all of which is listed below:

TIGER | Binge now, first on Showmax

HBO’s two-part Tiger Woods documentary, Tiger, offers a revealing look at the rise, fall, and epic comeback of the global golfing icon.

The documentary series contextualises Tiger’s triumphs and tragedies through never-before-seen footage and interviews with those who know him best, including his former caddy and close friend, Steve Williams; golf legend Sir Nick Faldo; Tiger’s first true love, Dina Parr; and Rachel Uchitel, the woman at the centre of the sex scandal that forever altered Tiger’s world, breaking her silence for the first time.

THE COMEY RULE | Binge now

With all eyes on America right now, the turbulent events surrounding the 2016 US election that brought Donald Trump to power come under the spotlight in the topical political drama The Comey Rule.

The four-part mini-series stars Emmy winner Brendon Gleeson (In Bruges) as Trump; Emmy winner Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) as former FBI director James Comey; and Oscar winner Holly Hunter (Succession) as acting attorney general Sally Yates.

Based on Comey’s autobiography A Higher Loyalty, The Comey Rule is written and directed by Billy Ray, who was nominated for an Oscar for his script for Captain Phillips and also wrote the box office phenomenon The Hunger Games.

SHOWBIZ KIDS | Stream now, first on Showmax

Written and directed by former Broadway child star Alex Winters (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure), Showbiz Kids is a raw look at Hollywood and the toll that early success can have on young professionals.

Highlighting the shared experiences of prominent former child stars, the documentary features intimate, revealing interviews with the likes of Henry Thomas (Elliott in E.T.), Mara Wilson (Matilda in Matilda), Evan Rachel Wood, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Milla Jovovich.

BABY GOD | Stream now, first on Showmax

If you thought Three Identical Strangers was fascinating, Baby God will have you glued to the screen.

The HBO documentary is a haunting examination into the work of infamous Nevada fertility specialist Dr Quincy Fortier, a man who deceived countless women struggling to conceive by using his own sperm — without their knowledge or consent — to impregnate them.

EVERYTHING ON SHOWMAX IN JANUARY
There’s of course plenty more of where that came from and to view everything on Showmax this month, including PEN15, the best-reviewed series of 2020; the Oscar-nominated murder mystery Knives Out; and the Golden Globe-longlisted local movie Moffie, click here.

It's said that if you enjoyed Devils on Showmax then chances of you also having a good time with Industry, their latest series, are also quite high.

It’s said that if you enjoyed Devils on Showmax then chances of you also having a good time with Industry, their latest series, are also quite high. The hit investment-banking drama has been described by Collider as “Euphoria and Billions had a baby on HBO.”

Industry is an exhilarating dive into the world of international finance, as seen through the eyes of ambitious twenty-somethings struggling to secure their futures.

The eight-part BBC-HBO series follows a group of young graduates competing for a limited set of permanent positions at a top investment bank in London – but the boundaries between colleague, friend, lover, and enemy quickly blur as they immerse themselves in a corporate culture defined as much by sex, drugs, and ego as it is by deals and dividends.

Penned with candid insider intel by former bankers Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, Industry takes us inside the world of high finance through the eyes of an outsider, Harper Stern (Myha’la Herrold), a talented and ambitious rookie from upstate New York.

The series is produced by Bad Wolf (The Night Of, His Dark Materials), with the tone for the show set by Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham (Girls), who directed the pilot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbM84z4XYgc&feature=youtu.be

Down and Kay’s fresh take was to approach the world of high finance as a character drama. “We were obsessed with the idea of the trading floor as an anthropological place to study human beings,” Kay says. “You’re forced to sit next to each other for 12 hours a day, it’s super high intensity, you’re promised this meritocracy but it’s incredibly hierarchical… we thought if we could capture that authentically, it would be a hotbed for drama.”

Down and Kay created an ensemble cast of disparate outsiders who, because of the competitive process that will see only some of them get permanent jobs, are both friends and adversaries for every waking hour. And they don’t have to be likeable or scrupulous to be hugely compelling.

Industry‘s diverse ensemble cast includes Herrold, Harry Lawtey (Marcella), Nabhaan Rizwan (1917, the upcoming Station Eleven), Marisa Abela (Cobra), and David Jonsson (Deep State) as the graduates, with Freya Mavor (The ABC Murders, Skins), Will Tudor (Game of Thrones), Conor MacNeill (Death and Nightingales, Artemis Fowl) and Ken Leung (High Maintenance, Marvel’s Inhumans) as management.

Industry is already earning five star reviews in places like The Guardian and The Independent, who hail it as, “A millennial Mad Men with plenty of swagger… The kind of thrillingly fresh series that only comes along once every few years, a drama that makes its rivals look tired and uninspired….”

The first four episodes of industry are now streaming first on Showmax, with new episodes coming every Wednesday. Binge the full season from 30 December 2020.

Visually spectacular is one of the best ways to describe HBO's His Dark Materials which is back for a second season following the success of the first installment.

Visually spectacular is one of the best ways to describe HBO’s His Dark Materials which is back for a second season following the success of the first installment. The Showmax team offered us the opportunity to see the new season earlier which we naturally accepted. The series is one that includes some of the best cinematography around with a compelling story line to boot. Much like movies such as Lord of The Rings, Fantastic Beasts, Harry Potter and the like, His Dark Materials brings the same look and feel with the ability to transport you to far away magical places that take your sense of imagination to a whole new level.

For those who might not have a clue about what we’re referring to, His Dark Materials is an adaptation of Philip Pullman’s classic fantasy novels revolving around the main character, Lyra, whose search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and sets off a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust.

The new season picks up where the first left off which ended with Lord Asriel opening a bridge to a new world. In a strange and mysterious abandoned city, Lyra meets Will, a boy from our world who is also running from a troubled past. Lyra and Will learn their destinies are tied to reuniting Will with his father but find their path is constantly thwarted as a war begins to brew around them. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter searches for Lyra, determined to bring her home by any means necessary.

You can’t help but appreciate the beauty the series presents (we’ve said this before we know but it’s true), the quality of production is fantastic. If you put in the time, it makes for a great and enticing watch, fans of the fantasy genre will especially enjoy it. Granted, we admit to not being big fans of the genre but keeping an open mind like we do with most things we watch certainly helps and we’re glad we also did in this instance both with the first and now the second season.

Since her breakout and spectacular role in the movie Logan, Dafne Keen was always going to be one to keep an eye on. Her role in this one further demonstrates her ability and adaptability with a certain mysterious feel to her character trait. She’s starting to build her acting career around this premise with her character on Logan also easily being in a mysterious mold. His Dark Materials heavily revolves around her and she carries it all perfectly making for an overall solid watch.

She (Dafne Keen) is joined by fellow child star Amir Wilson who plays the role of Will, together they’re supported by Golden Globe winner Ruth Wilson (The Affair, Luther), Oscar nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), and Golden Globe nominees Andrew Scott (Fleabag, Sherlock) and James McAvoy (X-Men), with Oscar nominee Terence Stamp (The Limey and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) joining this season.

We can’t wait to finish the rest of it and we have no doubt there will be another season, at least we hope. His Dark Materials S2 officially becomes available to watch first on Showmax, weekly from 17 November; you can then starting binge watching it from 29 December.

Our thanks to the always classy team at Showmax for the preview.

Intrigue and mystery are some of the best words we can use to describe The Undoing, a new mini-series from HBO starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant.

Intrigue and mystery are some of the best words to use when describing The Undoing, a new mini-series from HBO starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Set to premiere on Monday, 30 November at 21:30 on M-Net, we were offered the opportunity to checkout the first 5 episodes by the M-Net team and aren’t we glad we took them up on that. Like numerous other HBO produced series, The Undoing is one that will easily lend itself well to audiences and continues in the mold and tradition of a typical HBO series, most if not all carry a different tone that makes for gripping watching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWoiNlLqLR8

The series follows Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman), who is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. She’s a successful therapist on the brink of publishing her first book, has a devoted husband and a young son who attends an elite private school in New York City. Things aren’t as easy flowing and straightforward as the plot makes it seem though with things quickly unraveling towards the latter parts of the first episode with more details revealed in the subsequent episodes. Adding to its prestige is legendary actor Donald Sutherland who plays Grace’s father Franklin Reinhardt: a retired financier and loving grandfather, tasked with protecting his family when turbulent revelations come to light.

Created and written by David E. Kelley and starring Nicole Kidman, the six-episode series is, like their previous HBO collaboration, Big Little Lies (another one we’re huge fans of). It’s based on Jean Hanff Korelitz’s 2014 novel “You Should Have Known,” whose title referred to a self-help book Grace had written and, more obliquely, to her failure to see the truth about that charming husband.

Judging by the above you would swear that we were painting a perfect picture but that’s not entirely true especially since we feel more could have been done with the story line, the fact that just after episode 2 the plot becomes clearer, works both in its favor (it gets to the point quickly) and against it (the initial intrigue around it lessens). Having said that there’s plenty more to keep audiences watching especially when trying to figure out what really transpired. This is so much so that we can’t wait to see the remaining episode and the fact that we have to wait that long doesn’t put us at ease.

The strength of its cast plays a huge part in carrying the entire series especially Kidman who the series heavily revolves around and as expected, she delivers a great performance throughout. Hugh Grant also adds star power with the legendary Donald Sutherland adding his usual flair to proceedings. A special mention also goes out to the gorgeous Matilda De Angelis who the story line is mainly based on.

It being a 6-part miniseries makes it a short and sharp affair meaning if you had access to the entire thing you could easily consume and binge in a day. It’s a solid addition to HBO’s rich library which lately has consisted of once off series that don’t have a second season worked into them, a good example of this in action and done better than most was Watchmen, a resounding success that hit all the right cords with most who (including us) wish there was more. An interesting approach but one that’s seemingly working and sets the company apart. The Undoing doesn’t quite do enough to reach ‘Watchmen like’ heights but that’s not the point behind it. What it is instead is a solidly put series that most will enjoy.

Thank you to the team at M-Net for indulging us and the opportunity to look into their latest exciting piece of work.

Coinciding with its premiere on 1Magic tonight at 21:30, Lovecraft Country is the next HBO series aiming to shatter the ceiling. It seems that objective has already been achieved with international reviewers already labeling it as another masterpiece from the brilliant and much revered Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us). In this one he is in esteemed company with J.J Abrams joining him to round off a series that is well set to be one of the few shining lights of 2020.

HBO best describes the one-hour drama series as being based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, follows Atticus Black as he joins his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. What follows is a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.

Now truth be told, I admit to not particularly being a fan of Jordan Peele’s work, so imagine my feelings when I got the opportunity to review his latest piece of work, sceptical to say the least. For one I have always said that I’m not a horror fan and to this day the appeal of it (which I understand what others get) for me, personally, I have never been encapsulated by. Jordan Peele very much specialises in that but always manages to put a spin on things with the inclusion of a black cast driving the story line, we’ve seen it in Us and Get Out.

Despite my reservations, I decided to give it a try and the result is a tough one to determine. For one I enjoyed the opening sequence of it and of course the clever inclusion and shining a light on racial issues and biases, but like with most horror titles and especially Peele’s work, weird sequences tend to deflect away from the good, at least that’s what I thought. I get that the premise is mostly horror but I just wish less was more in this instance. So yes, if you are not particularly a horror fan then chances of you liking this are quite minimal.

Having said all of that, it’s all according to personal taste, in as much as it’s not for me, I’m confident that many others will like it a lot. It’s different, edgy and certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat with tons of intrigue also included as part of it. And that’s what good entertainment is all about really.

We also have confirmation that in addition to 1Magic, it will be also be hitting Showmax real soon but in stages, specifically there will be 4 episodes on 8 September, followed by the next 4 on 6 October, and the final two being available on 20 October. Like all horror movies, this one is not for the kids so best to keep that in mind … it also explains why the timing it currently has on 1Magic, which by the way, and to remind you, is 21:30. Catch the first episode tonight and I look forward to the numerous debates I’m going to have with various individuals about this one, especially those that like it, which again there will be plenty I’m sure.

Special mention to the Showmax team for letting us into the early pre-screener, as always, classy.

Comedy and laughter, there’s nothing like it and thanks to Yvonne Orji we’ll be getting just that which is highly recommended and needed at the moment. Look, we recognise that these are probably the toughest times we as humanity have had to contend with in recent history but the continuous influx of bad news daily and with more people seemingly having a certain of flair for delivering it, is just, well, very depressing.

The world could use with a bit of joy, in fact there’s a lot of it needed currently. Enter the lovely Yvonne Orji, who thanks to HBO, officially has her first comedy special. For those familiar with the popular series, Insecure, will better know her as Molly. The special is all set for Showmax from tomorrow (6 July 2020) this followed after it first premiered on 1Magic last Friday (3 July 2020). Thanks to the Showmax team we got the opportunity to see it much much earlier.

In her first comedy special outing, Yvonne has the audience rolling with laughter as she brings her razor-sharp wit and confidence to the stage. Both celebrating and poking fun at her strict, formative Nigerian-American upbringing, Yvonne shares her unique journey from pre-med to comedy, talks about parental pressures to get married, and takes us along to Lagos to meet her family and friends.

It’s no secret how much we enjoy comedy and general laughter, comedy specials ensure the best of both. It’s also refreshing to see stand up comedy coming from a female instead of the usual suspects who are mostly male. Not to say there aren’t female comedians out there who have not done it, it’s just not as frequent as it should be.

Yvonne’s first comedy special is fresh and shot in a great way. The switch up between her actual performance and her home life in Nigeria is something we really enjoyed seeing, it helps give you insight into who she is and where she comes from in a genuine and authentic way. She’s also a natural in how she comes off in her performance which makes it hard to believe that it’s her first comedy special.

No doubt it’s the start of many more for her, remember the name Yvonne Orji, a proud African lady who is quickly making her mark on the international scene, in fact she has already. And if you want more from her then do also checkout her Backstories also from HBO.

Do yourself a favour and catch her comedy special, you will more than enjoy it. If you are especially looking for an escape away from the current state of things and depressing news then this is a great way to do so. Catch it on Showmax from tomorrow (06 July 2020).
