The all-new Opel Grandland has landed in South Africa, bringing futuristic design elements from the Opel Experimental concept car to production reality.

Priced at R789,900, this family SUV introduces several industry firsts alongside significant improvements in size and technology.

The standout feature is the 3D Vizor with illuminated Griffin logo at its center, flanked by the revolutionary Intelli-Lux Pixel HD lighting system.

This cutting-edge technology uses over 50,000 individual elements to deliver precise high-definition light distribution, automatically cutting out oncoming traffic while maintaining optimal brightness.

“The all-new Grandland is a milestone for Opel. The relationship to the Opel Experimental is unmistakable. It offers innovations that were first seen on this extraordinary concept car. The new Grandland will therefore strengthen our position in the important family crossover segment,” said Mike Whitfield, Managing Director, Stellantis South Africa.

The new Grandland has grown substantially compared to its predecessor – 173mm longer, 19mm taller, and 64mm wider. At 4,650mm long and 1,905mm wide, it sits on 19-inch alloy wheels and commands a confident road presence. The long 2,784mm wheelbase translates to increased interior space, while boot capacity has grown to 550 litres with seats up, expanding to 1,645 litres with rear seats folded.

Inside, a 16-inch central display dominates the dashboard, while a fully digital cluster provides essential driver information. The Intelli-HUD head-up display keeps eyes on the road, and Pure Mode can be activated to reduce screen clutter during challenging driving conditions. Physical buttons remain for climate control functions.

The AGR-certified seats introduce powered bolsters with pneumatic pockets for improved lateral support, plus ventilation and massage functions for the driver. Rear passengers enjoy 20mm more legroom than before. All interior fabrics are 100% recycled, supporting Opel’s sustainability goals.

Storage solutions include the innovative Pixel Box with illuminated translucent glass housing a wireless smartphone charger. The vehicle offers over 35 litres of interior storage compartments throughout the cabin.

The Grandland GS Line 1.6T features a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 134kW and 240Nm, paired with an automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.0 l/100km combined and 5.3 l/100km on the highway.

Chassis technology includes frequency selective damping (FSD) that adapts damping force based on road conditions and driving style. This provides comfort over rough surfaces while maintaining sporty handling when needed.

Standard safety features include Automatic Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Adaptation, and In Crash Braking.

The Intelli-Drive 2.0 system offers semi-automatic lane-change assist, while parking is simplified with front and rear sensors, rear-view camera, and 360-degree Intelli-Vision camera.

The Grandland comes with a 5-year/100,000km warranty with roadside assistance, plus a 12-year/unlimited kilometre anti-corrosion warranty. Service intervals are set at 12 months or 15,000km, with the first five years or 90,000km covered by Opel’s service plan.

There was a time not that long ago when the MPV market was a lot bigger than it is today and the Opel Zafira was fast becoming a contender in the best-selling MPV in Mzansi. But the rise of the SUV shrunk that MPV demand, causing the most recent Zafira size to be retired, after 3 generations since 1994. That left a gap in the Opel range for a spacious family car that can carry more than five people.

Now that gap has been filled by a new kind of MPV, the new Opel Zafira Life.

The Zafira Life comes in two flavours and features a seven-seat layout as standard, while an eight seat is available as well. Opel also offers an optional premium seat upgrade for the middle row, which replaces the three-seat bench with a pair of swivelling captain’s chairs and a folding table.

The Opel Zafira Life’s overall shape is somewhat familiar, because it’s a sister model to the van-based Citroen SpaceTourer and Peugeot Traveller people carriers. These are not available in Mzansi. The main difference is the Opel-ified front end of the Zafira Life, with a rounded look and a distinctive design that seems to be the result of blending the rounded front of the Citroen with the grille of the Peugeot. It’s a neat look, but aside from the Opel badges, it’s the only difference between the Zafira Life and its sister machines.

It’s a similar story under the skin, where you’ll find the Stellantis 2.0 diesel. Developing 110kW of power and 370 Nm of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The cabin is lifted wholesale from Stellantis models, too. There are two trim levels called Edition (which is geared towards the private hire and mobility conversion markets) and Elegant, the latter of which we drove at launch here. The Elegant model is very well equipped, with heated leather seats, panoramic glass, a rear camera, touchscreen infotainment with navigation, head-up display, and tinted windows all part of the spec list.

The remarkable thing about the Zafira Life is that its van roots create loads of space for passengers and luggage inside, while the sliding side doors mean access is simple, even the tightest spots. There’s also the option of power opening and closing doors for added convenience.

The high-set seats mean you get an SUV-style view of the road ahead, while the assorted driver aids help you to position and manoeuvre the car, and a secondary mirror allows you to keep an eye on the back seats if you need to. The seats in the rear slide back and forth on runners and can even be removed completely, although they are very heavy, and you’ll need somewhere to store them if you want to use the Zafira Life’s full boot capacity.

There’s a huge tailgate at the back, although it raises and lowers fairly easily on its gas struts. If you want quick access to the boot, there’s also separate opening tailgate glass, which allows you to put lighter items in without opening the back completely.

All this practicality is great, but don’t go thinking that the Zafira Life’s roots mean it’s van-like to drive. On the contrary, it has a very car-like feel about the way it drives, with a nimbleness that you won’t find in any other non-Stellantis van-based MPV. The steering is light and quick to respond, while the handling balance is reasonable.

Pricing for the Opel Zafira Life Edition is R749 900 while the Zafira Life Elegance is set at R869 900.

Rumours have been swelling as to exactly when – and if ever – the 2021 Opel Corsa will make its South African debut. This comes following the announcement of the completion of merger of PCSA and FCA brands.

The announcement of the distributorship comes with great news: The introduction of the much-anticipated 6th Generation Opel Corsa, which will be available at Opel dealerships across South Africa from mid-January this year.

According to Opel, this new model sports a 3-Cylinder – 1.2l petrol engine generating 55kW. On the exterior is a statement of the new bold & pure design coming from Opel. The brand insists this emphasises the precision of German engineering, combined with the bold sculptural artistry.

Step inside, the design of the cockpit features a driver-oriented instrument panel with a distinctly sporty, yet welcoming personality executed with German precision.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new Corsa lost up to 10% of weight, it is about 108 kg less than the car it replaces, even though they are roughly the same size. The new Corsa is 4.06 meters long, with boot capacity of 309 litres, an increase on the outgoing model of 10%.

The new Corsa Edition will cost R289,900 at launch and will be simply the first derivative introduced this year, with further versions planned for the first quarter this year

Staying true to global announcements made this Monday by parent company Stellantis, PCSA (Peugeot Citroen South Africa) has confirmed that the much-anticipated incorporation of the Opel brand into the PCSA stable has taken place.

“We are pleased to announce PCSA has become the official distributor of Opel vehicles in South Africa from the 1st of January 2021.” read the statement.

PCSA, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Stellantis, currently distribute Peugeot vehicles and since October 2019 Citroen vehicles as well. Opel becomes the third Stellantis brand to be distributed by PCSA.

Opel has a long and distinguished history in South Africa, with presence in the market since the 1930s. The brand is expected to continue growing from strength to strength owing to the solid foundation built in the 80-plus years here in South Africa. It was one of the few International Car Brands to allow special edition models to be developed uniquely for the South African market.

On Monday Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group announced that the merger between the two brands is complete, making Stellantis the operator of 14 vehicle brands and the fourth-biggest automaker in the world.

Car maker Opel, which PSA Group has agreed to buy from General Motors, will use the French carmaker’s technology in the next generation of its best-selling Corsa model, a company spokesman said, confirming a newspaper report.

The current Corsa model is built with GM technology. Opel had previously said its new Corsa, slated to be launched in 2019, would also be built with GM technology but has now decided to use Peugeot technology, allowing for higher margins, Allgemeine Zeitung Mainz reported in its online edition on Monday.

PSA, which agreed to buy Opel in March, was not immediately available for comment.

The new Corsa will be Opel’s fourth joint project with PSA after Opel models Crossland X, Grandland X and Combo. The Corsa will be built at Opel’s largest manufacturing site, in Saragossa, Spain.

I’ve recently become a disciple of GM. No, I’m not under spell by my General Manager, and I’m not taking to learn more about the short-lived Genetically Modified. Nope, I’ve fallen in love with the Corsa , a hot hatch built by General Motors’ Germany-based Opel division. The only GM I’ve recognised for the past 18 months – or so.

My Opel Corsa is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out 110 kW at 5000 RPM and 220 Nm of torque at 3 000 RPM. Bolted to a quick-shifting six-speed manual transmission that spins the front wheels, the turbo four pelts the Corsa from zero to 100km/h in 9.6 seconds and, given enough tarmac, on to a top speed of 210 km/h.

It’s easy to get carried away with power figures because they get tossed around so much in the auto industry. 200, 230, 190, 210; it’s all theoretical until you have your butt in the driver’s seat and your foot buried in the throttle.

Behind the wheel, 207 is about spot on for the Corsa. Remember, it’s the size of a Toyota Etios and it tips the scale at 118kg. Any more power would make the Corsa overwhelming to drive on the street, and any less would make it feel sluggish.

The turbo is what makes the fire-breathing Corsa stand out from its rivals, including the Ford Fiesta and the Volkswagen Polo. In many pocket-sized hot hatches, the engine lacks a pulse until the turbocharger kicks in, it spins itself dizzy in the middle of the torque band, and it wheezes to the rev limiter.

The turbo is what makes the fire-breathing Corsa stand out from its rivals.

The Corsa is quick off the line because the torque comes on relatively early, the engine pulls hard and steady right through the middle of the torque band, and it becomes downright explosive once the tach needle passes the 3,000-rpm mark. It’s like if the four-banger just drank a Big Gulp’s worth of Red Bull after shooting three espressos – if that makes sense.

The Opel Corsa 1.4 T Sport will set you back R225 200

The votes are in, the ballots tabulated, and a combined jury of automotive journalists from across Mzansi have officially named their Car of the Year for 2017. This year’s top prize went to the new Opel Astra.

The C-segment hatchback took the crown, edging out a win over the Volkswagen Tiguan we at SA Vibe were so much rooting for, but most importantly the VW Passat which came in at 3rd place followed by the Audi A4 as runner-up. That was still enough, however, to edge out the other finalists, including the Honda Civic, Hyundai Tucson, Jaguar F-Pace, Mazda CX-3, Renault Kadjar and Toyota Fortuner.

The Astra is GM’s challenger to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. It’s marketed as a Vauxhall in the UK, an Opel in continental Europe, a Holden in Australia, and as the Buick Verano Hatch in China. Past versions were also sold as the Saturn Astra in the United States, but so far this latest version of the model remains out of reach to American customers – not that we care.

The award is handed out by a combined panel of 28 jurists, following semi finalist election by their peers, of an original list of 35 eligible vehicle ranges.

How, when does the scoring take place?

The 2017 Coty Jury put the finalists through structured testing procedures in early February, before scoring each finalist against its direct class competitors on aspects that include:

• Affordability
• Cabin Styling, Layout, and Ergonomics
• Engine
• Engineering Integrity and Build Quality
• Exterior Design
• Overall Excellence
• Ride Quality
• Steering and Handling
• Technology
• Transmission
• Value for money

Next year’s awards should be as exciting with the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Nissan Navara and MINI Countryman – just to name a few – to run for the title.

General Motors has sold Opel and Vauxhall, its European car brands, to PSA, the company best-known for Peugeot and Citroen.

The deal, which also includes GM Financial’s operations in Europe, is worth 2.2 billion Euro ($2.31bn) and will see PSA instantly grow to being the second-largest automotive company in Europe. For GM, meanwhile, it’s an opportunity to renew focus on its North American markets, along with China, Korea, and South America, where the bulk of its business takes place.

he deal will mean an evolving change for Opel and Vauxhall’s range over the coming years. Under the terms of the sale, PSA will continue to benefit from the GM intellectual property used in developing and maintaining the current Opel and Vauxhall line-up, though plans are afoot to progressively shift the brands’ cars over to PSA platforms. While that means there shouldn’t be any huge shifts immediately visible, and sales of the current cars will continue, eventually the goal is to oust the GM underpinnings and replace them with platforms developed for Peugeot and Citroen.

PSA may also eventually buy hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains from the GM/Honda joint venture. Warrants worth 650m Euro and held by GM, meanwhile, will be exercisable in five years, and mature four years after that; the automaker has already pledged that it will sell them upon exercise, rather than retain a stake in PSA.

GM bought Opel in 1929, but profits have been tough to squeeze from the business: it lost more than $22bn between 2000 and 2016 on an EBIT basis. Indeed, nearly two decades of losses had left GM investors pushing for a split, arguing that General Motors was spreading itself too thinly. While today’s deal is being spun as a win-win for all involved – including BNP Paribas, which is contributing around $460m in return for a slice of the financial services company – GM will take a $4-4.5bn hit as a loss on paper.

GM bought Opel in 1929, but profits have been tough to squeeze from the business

In the process, the companies find themselves at the center of a political storm over potential job losses. GM will continue to be on the hook for the current Opel and Vauxhall pension plans for the most part, and politicians in the countries where the automakers have plants are already warning of fallout should plants be closed. PSA says that it will use economies of scale for R&D and parts purchasing to have Opel/Vauxhall generate operational free cash flow by 2020, with the goal of recurring operating margin of 2-percent by that year, rising to 6-percent by 2026.

That will require new cars, however. A non-compete agreement as part of the deal will prevent PSA from launching any of Opel/Vauxhall’s existing cars in new overseas markets. Similarly, GM will not be allowed to use the shared underlying technology in cars for Europe. PSA says it plans to have six new Opel cars using its platforms ready by 2023.

General Motors’ Germany-based Opel division is filling every gap in its lineup with a crossover, but it’s not giving up on the station wagon. The brand has introduced the long-roof variant of the new Insignia a few weeks ahead of its public debut at the Geneva Auto Show.

The Opel Insignia Sports Tourer is part of a new breed of wagons that puts an equal focus on form and on function. Its stylish design is accented by an elegant strip of chrome trim that gets wider as it runs from the base of the A-pillar to the top of the tail light on both sides of the car, a roof-mounted spoiler, and horizontal tail lamps. The Sports Tourer looks sleeker and more mature than the outgoing model. It’s also up to 440 pounds lighter.

The dashboard is clean and uncluttered, with a horizontal line that emphasizes the cabin’s width. A new version of Opel’s IntelliLink infotainment system headlines the Insignia’s tech features, and the wagon is among the few models in Europe compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. An available panoramic sunroof, an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, and heated rear seats make long trips more pleasant for all passengers.

Engine options remain unconfirmed. At this point, all Opel is telling us is that the Insignia will be offered with a wide range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Buyers will be asked to choose between a manual and an automatic transmissions, and either front- or all-wheel drive.

The 2017 Opel Insignia Sports Tourer will go on sale in the coming weeks across Europe, though deliveries won’t begin for another few months. The wagon will wear a Vauxhall emblem in the United Kingdom, and it will join the Holden lineup in Australia. South African sales aren’t officially planned at this point.

The all-new Opel Mokka – dubbed Opel’s first-ever sub-compact SUV – makes its South African debut at the end of March. Mokka, which has received unprecedented international acclaim with orders in Europe in 2014 easily surpassing the 240 000 units mark, is the third of the ‘new Germans’ from Opel to be launched in South Africa in just three months.

Mokka is aimed at consumers who have active lifestyles and a taste for adventure – taking a lead from Subaru’s crossover SUVs, BMW’s X3, Audi Q3 and Mercedes’s GLA. In this regard it is perfectly matched to the aspirational lifestyles of the target groups, but more than that it offers a quality alternative to those customers who live urban lifestyles and fully appreciate the high seating position, extra space, versatility and go-anywhere nature of an SUV. The high level of specification in the new Mokka is backed up by an efficient turbocharged petrol engine giving all models sporty driving dynamics.

The Opel Mokka is available as a four-model range with a choice of two trim levels and a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions with front wheel drive only. Opel’s proven 1.4-litre turbocharged ECOTEC petrol engine does duty in all four derivatives. The engine produces 103 kW between 4 900 and 6 000 rpm and a usable 200 Nm of torque between 1850 and 4 900 rpm.

Bokka, no, not you, the Mokka is said to be available at GM dealers from the end of March, pricing will start at R288 500 for the Mokka Enjoy 1.4T manual – R 298 500 for the Mokka Enjoy 1.4T automatic, R325 500 for the Mokka Cosmo 1.4T manual, and R335 500 for the range-topping Mokka 1.4 T Cosmo automatic.
