Heroes and heroines, both historical and imagined take one giant leap to the big screen this October. From superheroes to old classics reimagined, hyper-modern suspense and dramatic biography, Ster-Kinekor has the hero – or anti-hero – to suit every taste. Better yet, with Venom and First Man coming to IMAX and D-BOX theatres, cinema audiences won’t merely watch the films, but live them first hand.

IMAX’s fully immersive experience thrills fans with its capacity for completely absorbing the viewer into an alternative reality. Step into the story at Ster-Kinekor theatres at Eastgate and Cradlestone in Johannesburg, Mall of Africa in Midrand, The Grove Mall in Pretoria, Gateway in Durban, Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth and Cape Gate in Cape Town.

D-BOX also moves audiences – this time, quite literally. Hyper-realistic vibration pushes the boundary between fantasy and reality, allowing the viewer to see, hear and feel the story as never before. Let the motion spark your imagination at Ster-Kinekor D-BOX equipped theatres at the Mall of Africa (Johannesburg), The Zone Rosebank (Johannesburg), Cavendish (Cape Town) and Gateway (Durban).

Catch Venom now showing at D-BOX theatres at The Zone and Cavendish. Pre-screenings of First Man will show at IMAX and D-BOX theatres on the 26th of October as well as commercial cinemas. A Star is Born has officially released today, while Peppermint and Searching all come to commercial screens from 26 October.

Venom

Coming to Ster-Kinekor cinemas, Venom is part thriller, part horror and all action adventure. This is the latest of Marvel’s superheroes to come to the screen, since winning rave reviews after the character’s relaunch in the comic books. Journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is used to danger, but this time he comes up against a terrifying underground enterprise, a discovery that will change who – and what – he is. Arch villain Carlton Drake believes that humans are disposable; he has acquired a symbiote and believes that combining human and alien lifeforms is the key to our evolution. The results are terrifying. When Brock becomes host to an alien, he develops strange and terrifying superpowers, not to mention voices in his head. Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed.

A Star is Born

Bradley Cooper makes his directorial debut with this fourth remake of the original love story, earning rave reviews for his fresh and sensitive handling of the emotional subject matter. Jackson Maine (Cooper) spends his life on tour. Years of rock stardom have taken their toll, leaving him isolated and debilitated by alcoholism. His brother (Sam Elliott) manages his career, but offstage, Maine’s life is out of control, as he spins from one drunken episode to the next. One night, he comes across Ally, a talented amateur performer, singing in a bar. Impressed by her beautiful voice, he encourages her to bring her own material to the stage. He helps Ally to find fame, just as his own career and life are falling apart. Lady Gaga stars as Ally, the young singer songwriter; both Cooper and Lady Gaga’s performances received critical acclaim when the film premiered in Venice.

Not too long ago we mentioned that we were huge fans of him with the excitement of his latest movie being one of the special many we are looking forward to mostly. Needing no introduction, Tom Hardy is one of the biggest high profile names in Hollywood today and there’s a very good reason, taking a glance at his previous movie credits more than validates why. This time around he stars in one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Venom.

Cast alongside fellow Oscar contenders Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams, Venom seemingly has all the makings of being a special movie. It is Sony Pictures latest bid in seeking to create its own superhero mega-franchise. Many might remember the character Venom as the nemesis in “Spider-Man 3,” that starred Tobey Maguire. Set up in an intriguing way with a lead character mostly synonymous with being the villain, this was also going to pique our interest.

Cast – Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze & Reid Scott

Director – Ruben Fleischer

Genre – Thriller/Fantasy

Running Time – 2h 20m

The Premise

Journalist Eddie Brock is trying to take down Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake’s experiments, Eddie’s body merges with the alien Venom — leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Twisted, dark and fueled by rage, Venom tries to control the new and dangerous abilities that Eddie finds so intoxicating.

We won’t lie this movie is weird which is something we never thought we would be saying originally. Is that a good or bad thing? Well it actually depends on how you see it, some might find it off putting and a bit over the top whist some might like its rawness and the fact that it doesn’t hold back. Honestly we do think some parts were a bit overdone. Venom is a movie that had so much promise however, the end result doesn’t quite leave us blown away, amazed or super impressed. More could have been done with it and it’s a pity that it falls a bit short in parts.

That’s not to say though that it’s a complete failure, far from it in fact. Despite its shortcomings in parts, overall as a package it’s cool enough to kick off an intiriguing franchise that has the potential of getting better. The most positive aspect about the movie is the lead, Tom Hardy, who again affirms why he’s one of the big hitters in the movie realm currently. His quirky persona and the overall makeup of his whole character is what makes the movie stand out. And no we are not just saying that because we are fan boys…if anything you will have fun watching his performance.

Venom is a movie that promised so much but falls a bit short. When you compare it to other comic book based movies that have come out lately it doesn’t quite measure up. Despite it not being a cracker it does make for a good fun watch. In Tom Hardy the movie has the perfect lead who is its main shining light. It signals the start of an interesting franchise and we’re keen to see how the rest of the story unfolds. The writing and overall plot could have been better but Venom still does the job and that’s why it gets a fair 6.5 out of 5 rating from us. Venom officially opened in all cinemas today.

Special thanks to Ster Kinekor for the great IMAX pre-screening!

With so many exciting movies on the horizon it’s becoming difficult to keep up with it all…luckily we are here to help ease all this confusion. One of the most anticipated flicks set to come out before the year is out is from none other than our friends at Marvel Studios, yes them. Venom is the movie in question today with the latest trailer officially released and it’s awesome beyond words. Starring one of our favourite actors today, Tom Hardy, there’s literally no movie of his we’re not a fan of. This was the case ever since we first saw him in the classic (also one of our all time favourite movies) The Dark Knight Rises as the towering villain Bane, we’ve never looked back since. Venom sees him reprising a different role that also delves in the villain terrain…clearly being a villain works for this man…

The Premise

Following a scandal, journalist Eddie Brock attempts to revive his career by investigating the Life Foundation, but comes into contact with an alien symbiote that bonds with him, giving him superpowers as long as they share the same body.

After watching the trailer it’s clear that this is unlike any Marvel movie and one thing is for sure, it’s not for the fainthearted. Venom officially drops 5 October 2018 and Ster-Kinekor is releasing the movie in IMAX. Bookings for the pre-screening (happening on the 4th of October) open tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 September for 5 hours. Hurry to get your tickets as this is one of the must see movies of the year!
