While the automotive market in South Africa is currently flooded with high-spec newcomers and budget-friendly imports, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo has once again proved that local production and brand trust remain the ultimate sales drivers. According to the latest figures for the first quarter of 2026, the Kariega-built hatchback has reaffirmed its status as the country’s most popular passenger vehicle.

Volkswagen delivered 6344 units of the Polo Vivo to customers between January and March, with March alone accounting for 2258 sales. Since its introduction in 2010, the nameplate has moved over 450 000 units across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, a feat unmatched by any other passenger car in the modern era.

Enhanced Value: Standard Service Plans and Tech

For the 2026 model year, Volkswagen is responding to the increased competition in the A0 segment by sweetening the deal for the Life derivative and above. Effective April 2026, these mid-tier and flagship models now include a 2-year/30,000km EasyDrive service plan as standard.

In addition to the service plan, VW has standardised several high-demand features from the Life trim upward:

Park Distance Control (PDC): Front and rear sensors to assist with low-speed maneuvering.

Rear-View Camera: Providing a visual aid for reversing, a feature previously often relegated to the options list or flagship models.

Safety and Local Engineering

One of the primary reasons for the Vivo’s enduring success is its structural integrity compared to some entry-level rivals. The Polo Vivo maintains a Global NCAP 4-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection and 3 stars for Child Occupant Protection. As the only locally produced vehicle in its specific segment, it benefits from a supply chain and engineering focus tailored specifically to South African road conditions and safety requirements.

2026 Pricing and Model Range

The Polo Vivo range continues to offer a variety of naturally aspirated and turbocharged powertrains to meet different budget requirements. Every model includes a 3-year/120 000km warranty and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty.

Volkswagen is on an onslaught this year. Late last week – following the launch of the ID.4 in Mzansi – Volkswagen South Africa confirmed that consumers can look forward to the arrival of the updated Touareg SUV, available for purchase from August 1st, 2024. This premium offering boasts a refreshed design, alongside new technology features.

What you can look forward to

The most noticeable change lies in the Touareg’s front fascia. The grille has been redesigned to emphasize the vehicle’s width, complemented by striking new IQ.Light HD matrix headlights. These intelligent headlights feature three LED modules and L-shaped daytime running lights, offering improved visibility and a distinctive look. Additionally, an illuminated horizontal strip now stretches across the front, framing the Volkswagen logo.

The updates extend to the rear, featuring a continuous LED taillight strip and an illuminated red Volkswagen logo.

Interior Refinement

The new Touareg benefits from several interior upgrades. Standard equipment now includes improved voice control, while USB-C ports with faster 45-watt charging capabilities replace the previous 15-watt versions. Feedback from customers has also been addressed, with softer center console trims enhancing comfort.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Safety remains a priority for the Touareg, with a comprehensive suite of standard and optional driver-assistance features. These include Travel Assist for semi-autonomous driving, an area view camera for parking assistance, and Night Vision technology for improved nighttime visibility.

Trim Levels and Pricing

The new Touareg comes in two trim options: Elegance and R-Line. Both trims benefit from the standard features mentioned above, including:

IQ.Light HD matrix headlights
IQ.Light LED taillights with dynamic functions and illuminated Volkswagen logo
30-colour ambient lighting with adjustable settings across three zones
Updated interior trims
Specific design elements for each trim on the radiator grille, wheels, and bumpers
Electrically adjustable leather seats
New Volkswagen logo projection via exterior mirrors

The Touareg will be available with a single powertrain option: a 3.0 TDI 190 kW engine paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive.

Pricing for the new Touareg starts at:

3.0 V6 TDI 190kW (Elegance): R1,457,900
3.0 V6 TDI 190kW (R-Line): R1,763,900

In a world where we see more and more electric vehicles come to the front, and the introduction of new energy models to the local market increase by two fold (see what we did there?), it only makes sense for Volkswagen to take a crack at this EV thing for the third time. As a refresher, Volkswagen first introduced the electric e-Golf in Mzansi in 2021, followed by the ID.3 in 2022 as part of their media and market test programmes. The ID.4 Pro Performance is no exeption, it too will form part of a slightly larger media and market feedback programme before the model will go on sale in 2026. We were one of the firsts to join VW for a first impressions drive.

What you see, is what you get

At first look, the ID.4 is reminiscent of a few models in the Volkswagen stable already. It seems to be a mash-up between the Taigo, Tiguan and Polo. But its not, despite being only 5-inches shorter than the Tiguan, this model is based on Volkswagen’s modular electric drive (MEB) platform, which allows for a very large exterior and interior.

Up front, it sports VW’s signature lightbar and a larger than usual badge. The nose is as blunt as EV’s can get, but the confident stance (thanks to the 19-inch black diamond-turned Hamar alloy wheels) makes up for all of that. The side profile is quite friendly to the eye, but things get a bit weird as soon as the eye hits the C-pillar. This is where the curves get raised, more than they should, but all of this assists in securing a larger bootspace for all your cargo. The rear is neat, and the addition of a lightbar makes it quite a treat to admire from behind.

Step inside the Volkswagen ID.4 Pro Performance and you’re greeted by the 10-inch Discover Pro display in the centre for all your infotainment which supports wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto. VW says the model to go on sale in 2026 will have wireless support. All AC controls are backed into the display, with touch feedback shorts positioned right underneath. Move your eyes a bit lower and you’ll find plenty of space for your cups, storage for all your devices, a wireless charger, USB-C ports and plenty more storage space.

In front of the driver is a 5.3-inch ID Intelligence information display for all the vital instrumentals. Its quite tiny at first, but after a short while you get used to it. It is operated via the standard multifunction steering wheel, whose buttons provide sensory feedback. The rocker switch to the right of the display activates the drive modes and the parking lock.

Technicalities

The ID.4 Pro Performance has 150 kW and 310 Nm torque which is good for 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.5 seconds. The battery capacity is 77 kWh which permits maximum a range of up to 531 kilometres, which it proved for our first impressions drive.

What do I really think of it?

I like the Volkswagen ID.4. I really do. I feel like its the hero product that Volkswagen South Africa needs to successfully launch an EV in Mzansi. It has just the right of amount of range to even cater for an out of Gauteng road trip. The technology is on par and interior space is quite ample. The power is quite instant, and drive is smooth, just how I expect an electric vehicle from Volkswagen to be. Like I mentioend earlier it reminds me of the many other models in VW’s garage, and I think that’s a brilliant thing given the unease of many ICE vehicle drivers have when they have to switch to an electric vehicle.

When all is said and done, I can’t help but get stuck on the latency of VW’s arrival to the EV market – and its quite a frustrating one.

Why only launch in 2026? That doesn’t make sense

During the media test drive events held this past week, Volkswagen South Africa’s representatives confirmed that the electrc ID.4 will only go on sale in 2026. At first that may seem rather strange given the positive feedback shared from the test and pilot programmes of the e-Golf, ID.3 and ID.Buzz as well as general market perception and uptake of electric vehicles of late. Mind you, over 900 fully electric vehicles were sold in 2023 in South Africa alone.

According to VW, there’s method to the madness. Between now and the earmarked 2026 launch date there’s still a lot of heavylifting to be done. Aside from thorough market projections and planning, Volkswagen is banking on government to implement incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles, which will make their pricing more attractive to the consumer. Infrustructre is also a big deal for Volkswagen. In as much as their sister brand, Audi, has already laid the foundation for a network of chargers, they too are planning to contribute the network by installing their own chargers and establishing partnerships with other manufactureres and suppliers to ensure consumers are well covered.

Lastly, further hamolgation and specifications of the vehicle has to be relevant the local landscape, one such example was that the vehicles would need to be fitted with an engine underplate.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to experience the thrill of the 2024 Simola Hillclimb in Knysna, courtesy of the good people at Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa. The annual event, known as one of South Africa’s premier motorsport events, lived up to its reputation with a weekend packed with adrenaline-pumping action.

The highlight for Volkswagen Motorsport undoubtedly came in the B2 Class, where their drivers Daniel Rowe and Jonathan Mogotsi delivered a dominant performance, securing a commanding 1-2 finish. Their vibrant Volkswagen Motorsport SupaPolos were a constant presence on the challenging 1.9km hill climb, leaving the crowd in awe with their agility and power.

While Volkswagen Motorsport’s success was a significant takeaway, the Simola Hillclimb offered a much wider spectacle. The “King of the Hill” shootout, spread across Saturday and Sunday, saw a diverse range of vehicles put to the test. From classic cars showcasing the evolution of motorsport to highly modified modern machines, the competition was fierce across all classes.

One of the most captivating aspects of the event was the sheer variety of machinery on display. From the thunderous roar of V8-powered monsters to the nimble precision of formula cars, the hill climb catered to every motorsports enthusiast’s taste. The event also proved to be a haven for classic car enthusiasts, with meticulously restored vehicles showcasing the rich history of motorsport.

Beyond the on-track action, the Simola Hillclimb offered a vibrant atmosphere. The dedicated spectator areas provided excellent vantage points to witness the breathtaking climbs, while food stalls, merchandise pop-up shops and entertainment options kept the crowds engaged throughout the weekend.

For Volkswagen, their Motorsport team now returns to regular duty with its factory team, Astron Energy Polo Cup and the Volkswagen Rookie Cup all poised for action at the third round National Championship Extreme Festival at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria on Saturday 18 May.

Volkswagen South Africa has unveiled the new look of its range-topping Polo Vivo GT. The refreshed model boasts a sleeker and sportier appearance with a number of exterior and interior updates.

According to Volkswagen, the Polo Vivo GT’s redesign is aimed at enhancing the car’s athletic performance and dynamic character. The changes include a new black honeycomb grille, LED daytime running lights, and a revised front bumper that gives the car a more aggressive stance.

The Polo Vivo GT also receives a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels, finished in glossy black, and a black roof that adds to the car’s sporty profile. At the back, the car gets a new bumper with a diffuser insert and a sporty exhaust tip.

Inside the cabin, the Polo Vivo GT has been updated with a new multifunction steering wheel wrapped in leather, GT-branded sport seats with red stitching, and a black headliner. The car’s infotainment system has also been upgraded with a new 6.5-inch touchscreen display that features App-Connect, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity.

Under the hood, the Polo Vivo GT retains its 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 81 kW and 200 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, and Volkswagen claims a fuel consumption figure of 5.6 liters per 100 km.

The Polo Vivo GT has always been a popular choice for South African drivers who are looking for a small, fun-to-drive car that offers good value for money. With the new updates, Volkswagen is hoping to attract even more customers to the Polo Vivo GT.

“The Polo Vivo GT is a key model in our range, and we are excited to introduce the refreshed version to the South African market,” said Mike Glendinning, Director of Volkswagen South Africa. “The new design and features enhance the car’s already impressive performance and value proposition.”

The new Polo Vivo GT is available in four colors: Reef Blue Metallic, Pure White, Reflex Silver Metallic, and Limestone Grey Metallic. Prices start at R307,400 (excluding delivery and related fees).

It’s been about three years since the Volkswagen T-Roc launched in Mzansi, and since then VW has sold over 4 490 units of this compact vehicle. Although our test time with the initial model never came, the new refreshed model is gracing our driveway this week. Let’s get right into it.

What is it?

The Volkswagen T-Roc is an interesting little beast, isn’t it? It’s a compact crossover SUV that aims to blend style and performance in a package that’s both affordable and functional. And we have to say, it’s not a bad effort from the German automaker.

First off, let’s talk about the looks. The T-Roc’s design is definitely on the sporty side, with a bold front grille and sharp lines that give it a commanding presence on the road. Not as commanding as the Tiguan or our personal fave the Touareg, but its quite something to behold. It’s not going to win any awards for being the most original design out there, but it’s certainly a head-turner. Inside, the T-Roc is just as well-designed, with a spacious and comfortable cabin that’s packed with features and technology.

But wait… What are the changes compared to yesteryear’s model, you might ask. Volkswagen has updated the model by refining it and adding a new dual paint scheme. There’s that LED strip in the front (think new Golf) and there’s also some new wheel designs while the interior has been updated with the latest tech as standard.

But let’s be honest, looks aren’t everything. How does the T-Roc drive? Well, it’s not going to set your hair on fire, but it’s certainly not a slouch either. The vehicle is powered by a range of engines, including this 1.4-liter TSI engine with 110kW and 250 Nm of torque. All of them offer decent power and torque, and paired with the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, they provide a smooth and comfortable ride. The suspension system is also well-tuned to provide a balance of handling and comfort. Is it something worth raving about? Certainly not, we’re now more curious than ever to get behind the wheel of the 2.0-litre R-Line model for comparison sake.

So, is the Volkswagen T-Roc worth your hard-earned cash? Well, if you’re in the market for a compact crossover SUV that offers a good balance of style, performance, and functionality, then the T-Roc is definitely worth considering. It’s not the most exciting vehicle on the market, but it’s a solid and reliable choice that won’t break the bank. Ehm.

Our test Volkswagen T-Roc 1.4 TSI Style is priced at R563 800.

Volkswagen South Africa’s best selling vehicle is the Polo Vivo with 20 866 units sold in 2022. That is followed up by the Polo which sold 15 697 units while Volkswagen’s third best-selling selling model was the T-Cross with 10 384 units sold.

This amounts to roughly 74% of Volkswagen vehicles sold in South Africa.

To put things into perspective, Volkswagen sold 63 601 (Volkswagen Passenger Cars: 58 447, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: 5 154) vehicles in Mzansi, in 2022 alone.

Elsewhere, the Volkswagen Taigo recorded 1 885 sales in 2022. Mind you, it was only launched in June. The refreshed Volkswagen T-Roc sold 2 407 units last year, while the Volkswagen Tiguan range (including Tiguan Allspace and Tiguan R) sold 2 613 units during the same time.

Despite severe stock and parts shortages last year, the Volkswagen Golf range also improved sales by 109% in 2022 with 639 units sold.

In case you missed it, things have been rather messy ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter. So messy that even thousands of users have already deactivated their accounts.

In the midst of all the confusion for current and former Twitter employees and users of the site, one thing is certain: quite a few advertisers aren’t happy. General Motors, one of the largest automakers in the world already pulled the plug on advertising on the platform earlier this week and several other brands like Pfizer followed suit in the wake of the new ownership chaos.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and will decide about next steps depending on its evolvement,”
Volkswagen said in a statement.

To add fire to the flame, Volkswagen Group told its family of brands to suspend advertising on the now-beleaguered social media platform. Volkswagen Group consists of not only Volkswagen, makers of cars like the Jetta and Golf GTI, but brands like Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Ducati, Cupra, and Seat. Losing just GM with its four total brands would be a huge blow to any social media platform, now Twitter has to manage losing ads from the additional eight brands under Volkswagen’s umbrella.

Advertisers en masse are seeing Twitter as a potential poison to its advertising revenue, and it’s been about a week since Musk took over. As of now, the advertisements from Volkswagen group are temporarily paused according to Reuters and no timeline has been given for when the group will decide to start ads up again.
