Earlier this week Philip Morris South Africa (PMSA) introduced ZYN, America’s #1 nicotine pouch brand, to the South African market. This launch offers adult smokers who would otherwise continue smoking or using nicotine products a potentially better alternative.
The launch is aligned with Philip Morris International’s (PMI) goal of generating two-thirds of its revenue from smoke-free products by 2030.
What is ZYN and what does it do?
ZYN pouches are a tobacco-free product made from plant-based fibers, flavourings, and pharmaceutical-grade nicotine. Unlike snus, a similar product made with tobacco, ZYN does not contain tobacco leaf. According to PMSA, users place the pouch between their lip and gum for a smokeless and tobacco-free nicotine experience.
ZYN comes in a variety of formats, sizes, nicotine strengths (3mg and 6mg per pouch), and flavours (Black Cherry, Cool Mint, Bellini, Exotic Mango, and Espressino) to cater to individual preferences. Their retail price is set at R29.
While ZYN is not risk-free, it eliminates the combustion process of cigarettes, which significantly reduces exposure to harmful chemicals. Shockingly, cigarettes can reach temperatures as high as 900°C, releasing over 6,000 chemicals during combustion.
In addition to ZYN, Philip Morris South Africa offers a range of smoke-free products, including IQOS, a heated tobacco product. These products represent PMI’s commitment to providing adult smokers with better alternatives to cigarettes.
